Yes to all you've stated. I'd also seen in a video showing that in order for the gallium to penetrate better, you had to pour the gallium onto the aluminum and then score/scratch the aluminum through the liquid gallium. If I recall correctly, it was something about the oxide forming on the surface of the aluminum so fast that it would form a protective coating before you could pour the gallium onto it.

Aluminum oxide is the coating that occurs as aluminum reacts with the air. That's why you have to scruff up the surface. You should have kept the gallium heated in the liquid state to have it work better. Once it cools it loses a lot of its ability to affect the aluminum.

Hey Matt, You need to keep the galuim in Liquid form after mixing it with the Aluminium.
@Kittylord
@Kittylord 2 года назад
Fun video! However, as a lot of people have already commented upon, the gallium needs to stay in liquid form in order to permeate through the aluminum's crystal lattice. Once you poured it into the hole in the cold aluminum, it froze up the gallium. It would be interesting if you tried putting a heating element under the aluminum block to keep it warm enough to keep the gallium in liquid form. The shooting results afterwards would have been much more dynamic!

It definitely soaked in, you can tell by the color... It wasn't as dramatic because most videos you see with gallium and aluminum are of hollow objects where the thinner walls allow it to crunch. Most likely it melted again during one of the days within the week he left it to sit.

When metals are brittle, they also tend to be harder. It would be harder to damage them, but they would usually fail catastrophically when they do fail. That's why you have to heat and cool knives in certain ways. You have to heat them up to really high temperatures and cool them quickly to make them hard enough to hold an edge, then have to heat them to relatively low temperatures and cool them slowly to make them flexible enough that they don't just snap in half.

@internetcatfish

@@Jizzzmani I haven't studied metallurgy enough to be able to explain why metals get more brittle as they get harder. I just know from my experience dabbling in blacksmithing that harder metals don't bend, they just break. Instead of deforming, they just crack apart. A softer metal will bend out of shape before it snaps completely in two. That's why things like leaf springs make good knife blades. The metal is strong enough to keep a good edge, but flexible enough that it won't crack as soon as you apply stress to it.

That layer you spoke of is aluminum dioxide, which reforms very rapidly(within 10 minutes). This is why it's considered a "self healing metal". Little known fact: the aluminum oxide layer is roughly 3 times the melting temperature of the aluminum itself. This is why cleaning off the oxidation prior to welding aluminum is so important. If you don't clean off the oxidized layer, once you weld through that layer and get to the aluminum, the aluminum will just melt all the way through and make a giant hole. Aluminum melts at roughly 2.5 x lower heat than steel, get the oxidized layer on top of aluminum melts at roughly the same point. Right around 3,200° for the oxidized layer, and right around 1200 degrees for the aluminum itself. I only learn this because I had to pass an aluminum welding test. It was difficult to say the least.

I dont think vets and doctors dont learn too much extra science beyond their high school education. They have a vast amount to learn about bodies - vets more so as they have to learn about various animals rather than just one body type - humans with doctors. They do however, have a great capacity to learn so there's little he could'nt learn given enough time.

@@thekoalawasbrown Diffusion. Thermodynamics tells us that that the gallium will go from where it is most concentrated to where it is is least concentrated over a period of time. I'm not sure of the reaction between aluminium and gallium as physical chemistry is my area not inorganic chemistry but it is pretty cool. He could of kickstarted the reaction if he had drilled into the cavity full of gallium. The issue is the oxide layer forms almost instantly meaning the reaction rate was pretty slow. I bet if he'd drilled a few small holes 1/4" deep, all of the gallium would have diffused into the block. Still, the results were pretty cool to watch :D

That film that forms on aluminum in the first few minutes after you've cleaned it, is called corrosion. And it's not visible to the naked eye but it makes the top layer of the aluminum require about 3,000° to get through it which is why you can't weld aluminum without prepping it by getting that layer out of the way.

Aluminum is a bit softer. Which is why it didn't shatter before but instead dented or drilled into. When things become brittle they usually are also harder. That may be why it's not doing as much on the smaller calibers but the larger ones are actually chipping and cracking it.

Listening to that introduction I’m thinking that your editing software is on the fritz…. But the gallium on the Aluminium block? Genius! And kind of sciencyific as well! Though for the gallium to have the maximum effect you needed to have the entire aluminium block at or above 85F degrees for the entire week before shooting it. Once it cooled and hardened the interaction ceased and simple oxidation prohibited prolonged exposure and effect. This accounts for the ‘concrete’ appearance. That is the final state of interaction before the gallium solidified and quit interacting.
