For those who're wondering why the burger isn't really dissolving in the stomach acid which is meant to be strong. Your stomach acid is not just HCl. It's HCl coupled with activated pepsin which is responsible for proteolytic digestion. So, that whole piece of burger has proteins as well as fats and other stuff. It's not meant to dissolve completely. But also, stomach doesn't digest food or dissolve it. It just keeps it semi solid when it is passed down the deodenum! Hope it helps!

Appreciate you doing whatever you can to avoid allowing Google ads. Realize it’s not free or easy to write, produce and present your incredible videos. But maybe there’s other ways to allow us to sufficiently support your work besides awful and disruptive advertising. You two are maybe the best teachers I’ve ever seen. Your positive energy and catch phrase “Let’s do this!” is genius. I hope you guys are here for the long haul, keep making videos and remember just like the donor bodies, your content keeps giving back to the world.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment! We're always looking for the best possible ways to bring the most valuable content to our community of supporters. Our "end goal" is to get to a point that we can produce the exact content we want, the exact way we want, while also being able to afford doing it at a high level. Our hope is that the community understands this is a tedious process, and that we always have the viewer in mind when placing advertisements inside of our videos. Again, thank you for this thoughtful comment, and we'll be sure to discuss it as a group as soon as possible. Have a great day!

The anatomy and physiology of the stomach has always fascinated me. It contains an acid with a pH so low, that without a thin lining of cells and mucous, the acid would eat through the organ itself. Seeing the effects of NSAIDS and how they inhibit this protective layer is a good common example of a stomach being eaten by its own acid.

Spicy food tricks your brain into thinking that your mouth is “on fire” - the brain gets the same signals as if it was actually on fire. When the Capsaicin gets into the nose your body tries to flush it out which is why you get a runny nose - you may also experience drooling and watery eyes. When the capsaicin (what makes spicy food spicy) gets into the stomach it stimulates the production of gastric mucus which temporarily speeds up metabolism. When your stomach works to digest the spicy food you may experience pain but it’s not causing actual damage. Here’s is the whole process: 1. Capsaicin binds to pain receptors on your tongue. 2. The brain cools the body by sweating, salivating and producing mucus. 3. Pain receptors in the esophagus causes a burning sensation in the chest. 4. The irritated phrenic nerve may affect the lungs which causes hiccups. 5. Pain and cramping the stomach occurs. 6. The rate of digestion increases which causes diarrhea. 7. Perianal burning may occur. Does that help?

As a SEVERE GERD sufferer, it's amazing to see how little hydrochloric acid is truly in our stomach acid. It feels so much higher when it's burning away in places it doesn't belong. My GERD was so bad and improperly treated for long enough I now have a ton of scar tissue in my esophagus and have to go in for dilation every couple of years. They get it all stretched out laparoscopically with a balloon and it's an immediate difference. I know it's time to go back when I start feeling like things are getting stuck in my throat/I start choking while trying to swallow. While I know it's actually further down that the food is sticking, it's so interesting the brain tells us it's in the throat. First I can't swallow proteins, like chicken, steak, turkey, etc. The next phase is breads, pasta, etc. When I am ready to go in for the procedure, I can barely swallow my own spit and other plain liquids. It tends to happen in a quick succession... Like a couple of weeks. Due to the scar tissue and damage, I'm at high risk for Barrett's Esophagus and esophageal cancer. Hopefully proper treatment the last few years will prevent anything like that. If you are having issues with heart burn and/or reflux and it's not clearing up quickly with OTC products, PLEASE get to your doctor! They can refer you to a gastroenterologist yo get yourself checked out. It usually involves an Upper Endoscopy, which is absolutely NO big deal. The worst part for these types of treats is the prep.l

Important safety info: when diluting hydrochloric acid, always put the acid in water and never the water into acid!! The dissociation of H+ and Cl- ions in water is a highly exothermic reaction (it produces lots of heat) which can evaporate water if the water is in small quantity (when you just started pouring). If you pour the water in acid, this can bring hot acid droplets onto you! Be very careful and always take safety measures like gloves and goggles, like this gentleman here. Great material, by the way! ;)

One of the most scary things I have ever experienced, was being suddenly waken out of my sleep, taking deep gulps of air, feeling like I was being suffocated with this strong burning sensation in my upper chest. My initial thought was that I was suffocating somehow, and so I was literally *heaving* breaths trying to get it under control. Took about half a minute for me to realize just what had happened, when I noticed the taste -- stomach acid had crept up the esophagus and into the lower throat and the pain of it tricked me into thinking that there was something wrong with my lungs and my body responded by taking in huge breaths of air and also triggered the fight-or-flight reflexes as well as waking me out of sleep. Thankfully that has only happened to me like 2-3 times and the second time and beyond, I recovered quicker because I know exactly what it is now. The first time was damn scary, though.
@Dhalin
@Dhalin 2 года назад
Also, one more observation: you dropped the meat in, as one big chunk. This serves as an excellent demonstration of why you really need to chew food properly. Breaking it down into smaller pieces makes it easier to dissolve and break down (because breaking it into smaller pieces vastly increases the surface area being exposed to the acid). If you don't believe me, you can reproduce this effect with good ole ice. Get two ice cubes, smash the one into tiny bits and leave the other alone and let both melt. Note how the former is reduced to pure liquid much faster than the latter.

In my case, for the rest of my life I have to take a type of medication called a PPI (proton pump inhibitor) that reduces the amount of stomach acid produced. Although a small percentage of Barrett's patients get cancer, it is still a higher risk. Fortunately, there are procedures that can be done to lower the likelihood that it progresses to cancer.

@Toy For enzymes like in the stomach low pH and 100'F is optimal. Anyhigher and it would denature the proteins

*exotermic, those reactions produce heat and yes, they too get faster, but at a slower rate

It eroded all of my back teeth from both pregnancy and Crohns related vomiting for years. If my doctors had told me to rinse my mouth with a baking soda solution after throwing up I probably wouldn’t have lost those teeth!! That acid is no joke 😳

Same thing happened to me from nearly a decade of unproperly treated severe GERD coupled with dry mouth issues from medications. I am 38 and over half my teeth are either gone or rotted out. Will need full dentures very soon on the upper.

Why don't you rinse out your mouth with at least water after being sick? Otherwise you just get a disgusting sick taste/smell in your mouth i always do that although I barely ever actually throw up
@moofn

@@chillx656 this could potentially just swish the residue stomach acid around the mouth instead

I wish you guys would do a video on the effects of spicy peppers on the stomach. Start with Jalapeños and end with ghost peppers. I love spicy food and everyone always says that peppers damage the stomach and cause ulcers. I know that ulcers are usually caused by bacteria, not peppers. It’s just a thought…love the videos and teaching!
