Experiments to be conducted:
Standard blocking comparison
Stretched blocking comparison
Re-knitting with previously blocked wool
Re-knitting with previously blocked wool that has been reconditioned prior to knitting
Washing in the washing machine numerous times
Follow along to see what happens.

Hi Suzanne, I love the idea of this experiment! The only suggestion I have is to use a non superwash wool that has been dyed (not just the natural color). That way you don’t accidentally introduce an extra variable into your experiment (dyed vs undyed on top of superwash vs non superwash). Can’t wait to see the results!

I’m so excited to see the results! I’ve heard of superwash yarn stretching in one direction after blocking, but am not sure how non-superwash works-it plumps up, does that mean it shrinks? When I’ve blocked non-superwash yarn it almost stays the same gauge, so it feels like I’m not measuring or swatching right. I’ve also heard you say in another video that pinning into a larger size while blocking doesn’t work as over time the wool settles back into its original shape. I’m especially looking forward to your sharing the data on this one, mwahaha. It’s funny, a lot of times I just think about what happens with my own hair when I wash it, condition it, heat it/straighten it, and that is how wool would behave since it is essentially hair for sheep. It helps me realize why, say, my hat got bigger when I held it up to a space heater to quicken drying time. Though I tried to be careful, I basically was smoothing and lengthening the fibers as its own weight pulled over my hands as I dried it. Lesson learned lol.
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 3 года назад
Exactly. I also think of it as hair. Stay tuned.

This will be really interesting! I've only knit with superwash once -- by accident. It was a big dk weight shawl, in a fast-increasing crescent shape with bands of dropped and crossed stitches. I remember I was surprised at how unpleasant the yarn was to work with; it was like dead string. I did a good hard block to get it into a nice crescent shape and get rid of the hump in the centre. It was only a couple hours after it had dried and I took the pins out that I noticed it losing shape. Within a couple days it was like I'd never shaped it at all -- it looks terrible! What a disappointment. I don't understand why anyone *would* use superwash, the process ruins the wool.
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 3 года назад
More to come, stay tuned.
@pjschmid2251
@pjschmid2251 3 года назад
It would be interesting to see a comparison of weighted blocking like you might see with the weight of a sweater’s quantity of yarn. That’s where I have run into problems with superwash yarns. It would also be interesting to weigh them right out of the water bath to see which one is absorbing more water. I suspect the superwash does absorb more hence the extreme weight you would seem to encounter with superwash when blocking
@SuzanneBryan

I will take this into consideration. It is of interest to me too, thanks you.

I love this scientific approach! ❤❤❤ By the way, I read in an eczema booklet (vetted by medical professionals I think) that wool should be avoided for kids with eczema problems. In our cold country, my hand eczema gets worse if my hands get *cold* (I've always used wool mittens). What would you recommend for hats and mittens for eczema kids? It must be warm. I feel confused because I was always taught that wool was the only thing that could keep you warm in winter.
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 3 года назад
I found this very interesting so did some research. It seems that any material that causes overheating can exacerbate eczema. I would interpret that to mean that wool mittens would be fine for cold weather.

What timing! I just finished a sw sweater, and every time I wear it, it gets a little bigger. Just put it in the washer/dryer, and it got a bit smaller, but still larger than my steam blocked gauge measurements. I think the weight of the sweater is also a factor. I am very interested in your results.

As an engineer, I must say I adore experiments! Thanks!!! One question, Suzanne: do you have time to knit stuff for yourself or you just knit for educational purposes?
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 3 года назад
Great question. And and interesting question. It made me think about what and why I knit. I do knit a lot of projects as well. I average about 5 sweaters a year plus lots of socks. But - each project needs to provide opportunity for me to experiment. I am always looking for new ways to do things or improvements on old ways. Looking through my Ravelry projects, I see that most of them are my own designs. Thanks for asking. I do like to swatch too, for my videos.
