Research shows that psilocybin mushrooms have promising results for mental health support, particularly in reducing symptoms of depression, anxiety and PTSD.
Psychedelics have the potential to make a significant impact on mental health issues like anxiety and depression. They've been incredibly helpful for me personally.
I’m legally blind and I trip on LSD like everyone else! My ex-girlfriend is pretty much completely blind and we did a mushroom trip together and she experienced tech strong differences and still pattern of thinking differences rather than shapes and colours. Although she thought she could see at one point!
Without a doubt one of the most wonderful, amazing and cleansing experiences of my life was when I took magic mushrooms. I've struggled with depression for over a decade and felt like I'd left so much baggage behind after my trip. These drugs have so much potential!
Did LSD and honestly best experience ever. First time was alone and I know that you’re suppose to do it with others but it helped me notice how much I am one with nature. We are also never alone because of it. It helps you look at the universe in a different perspective. I also am diagnosed of depression but it helped me open my eyes to see that the mind will play alot of tricks on you if you let it. 11/11 (or 10/10 lol)
I also want to try mushrooms 1st time completely alone in my room, i think being alone is the only way for me to avoid a bad trip, or control it if needed. The only thing that worries me, i plan on using my computer to listen music on youtube, maybe even play some games.. And if my pupils are dilated, how will the monitor screen affect the eyes?
hey! dosing alone is probably more powerful of an experience than tripling among others. your trip definitely is influenced by other ppl, but if you’re alone you can feel free to be yourself without being affected by social cues.
My first few trips were alone too. If having someone else there isn't what you want then don't force it. Chances are you know yourself best. I do recommend having a good friend you can text with while tripping though. Texting my (now) gf while tripping made so many good things happen.
I’ll never forget my first time mushrooms in college. We put them together in a PB&J sandwich after grinding the mushrooms into a powder, and was having the time of my life UNTIL something weird started happening. I felt cold and nauseous, so I wrapped myself into a sleeping bag and hopped over to my room and laid on my bed. I felt such dread that everything negative in my life was happening all at once. Then I stare at my wall, and a poster of Eddie Van Halen started moving. Edit turned his head toward me and stuck his hand out of the poster almost saying “come with me” and embrace the feelings. Everything was gonna be ok, and it was! After that I felt like the happiest on the planet and was just so social and in pure bliss. I realized I was internalizing so many negative aspects of my life and not letting myself resolve them. I swear mushrooms made me feel that I need to let go of the old, let go of past trauma and live in the now. Don’t let things you did in the past define your future, and it’s helped me deal with stressful situations a whole lot better. And that was over 12 years ago! The best part was seeing my friend in his underwear and ski jacket saying he was both hot and cold and didn’t know what to wear, and was running up and down the hallway trying to chase his thoughts. Truly a memorable experience I will never forget.
At age 18 I had never had a drink, smoke anything and never used any drug. On my way to freshman year of college my friends and I went to the Seattle Space Needle science Center. Handing me a small piece of paper I was told, “Eat this, you’ll like it.” Throughout the day I had a consistent hallucination. Everyone I saw whispered, “I love you.” I’ve never had a negative experience with LSD.
For the guy doing research on if it helps addiction, it personally helped me get over my weed addiction, the very first time I ever took shrooms after I felt no need to smoke anymore, and I also didn’t take shrooms again. But at the same time my mindset going into said trip was that I need to better myself, and I was using the shrooms to find answers, it showed me quitting weed is the first step, not necessarily taking away the feeling of fiening. I never have had that to begin with though only when I quit nicotine years before that, which was somehow easier even though the burning fiening sensation, that weed doesn’t bring, which is also why people say it’s not “addictive”.
Thank you for your eloquent response on Peyote. It is sacred to us and used for ceremonial purposes and not to just get "high" most of the time it's such a low dose that absolutely zero affects occur. People need to understand that peyote is not used for the hallucinations.
I was diagnosed with severe depression and mental health issues, not until a friend recommended golden teachers mushroom for spiritual and mental gratification. I’ve been well ever since for about 4 years now.
“Psychedelics shakes the snow globe in your brain, and when the snow settles, it settles in a very different pattern, allowing you to break your patterns” that’s a nice one 👏
My last experience with Psilocybin had kind of an opposite effect. I ate short of an eighth. I was to the point where I craved more. To fill the void I smoked an excessive amount of THC,(normally a bowl can last me a whole day.) And I drank way to much.(I'm not a drinker at all. Normally I cannot drink more then a couple beers/shots, before I dont want abide any more. Typically once or twice a year.) Though the cigarette thing kind of made sense. I'm normally a heavy chain smoker. Cigarettes were unfulfilling. Every time I lit a cigarette, I felt like I preferred it to be a joint. Often my cigarette use is to balance out a weed high.
Can I just say that this man is EFFORTLESSLY explaining something that has a pretty serious social stigma in a way that is approachable and informed, and is doing so in a way that is not condescending or know-it-all in any way. Simply an incredible job.

That comment on why he felt peyote should be studied via its synthetic form instead of natural form was really well said. Kudos to him for answering and researching in a way that was respectful to what the plant means to another culture.
I agree. The other side of the argument is that it's a cactus and can be grown in a controlled setting. Peyote grows very slowly, but it could be intentionally grown in large quantities. Even if native cultures are uninterested in that as a practice, it could be done for research without affecting the natural ecology. There are FACEBOOK groups devoted to respectful and responsible Lophophora williamsii cultivation. or just make it synthetically it really doesnt matter lol
Yeah the tweet acts as if there is some nefarious reason peyote isn’t in a lot of these studies versus the actual practical considerations of how many plants there are, who is using them and cultivating the cactus v recreating the chemical
I agree. I would also have liked to hear him talk about studying ceremonial vs. therapeutic use - I feel like there is a lot of room for research there. Ritual affects the mind as well and it would be worth studying them together.
@G223 It's a very small, slow growing cactus. It would take decades to get a meaningful supply. I believe the San Pedro cactus could have some promise here, but this is a bit outside my wheelhouse.
Except the part about private funding being used to fund these research projects when thats not the case at all. especially in Oregon and their new psilocybin treatment
@@youwouldntclickalinkonyout6236 i think it is important to note that he mentioned a lack of "federal grants" and that being more significant than the private funding angle, especially it being in response to the AOC, a house representative, tweet. Schizophrenic here. I tried, and used lsd for years during my lowest point in life, and it helped me - my hallucinations, visual and auditory, became much more bearable. Distorted human shapes and screaming women in my ceiling turned into cats running about, and whispers telling me to hurt myself turned into nothing more than unintelligible murmurs. It helped me accept myself and it opened up much needed and new thought patterns. I quit acid when I was in a better place, when it no longer benefitted me. Even though it helped me personally, I do not recommend people try it if they don't know what they're doing - and I especially do not recommend it to people with schizophrenia. I don't think it's a miracle drug or anything, rather, I believe that there are benefits and dangers when it comes to lsd. My experience is not universal.

This video is a testament to how "mainstream" and normative present-day attitudes are toward psychedelics. Even WIRED can confidently and proudly arrange and produce a video such as this one. This symbolizes a huge shift in public opinion (and de-stigmatization) of psychedelic substances. This is good news, and the hope for progress toward legalization. Marijuana is leading the charge, and has a long way to go. Psychedelics won't be far behind. The next decade is going to be interesting.

Makes you kind of wonder why they were made illegal in the first place. It’s not as if we need science to prove how they can positively impact our lives. My favorite part of the "first trip" story as told by Dr. Hofmann in his book LSD: My Problem Child, is the next day: "Exhausted, I then slept, to awake next morning refreshed, with a clear head, though still somewhat tired physically. A sensation of well-being and renewed life flowed through me. Breakfast tasted delicious and gave me extraordinary pleasure. When I later walked out into the garden, in which the sun shone now after a spring rain, everything glistened and sparkled in a fresh light. The world was as if newly created. I would always tell people if you're afraid of having a bad trip you'll give yourself a bad trip. Also start with a small dose and make sure your schedule is clear for the day.
Be around good friends in a friendly place. Avoiding drunk people is a good general rule for psychedelics in my opinion. Like he said, you have to be willing to ride the wave and accept that you're going wherever the trip takes you - if you can't go with the flow you create stress and that's the trigger of a bad experience. Also, if you have mental health issues, be honest with yourself and strongly consider skipping the psychedelics unless you'll be guided through the experience by a very knowledgeable person. Those who have bad experiences a lot of the time are those that should have passed altogether.
When I did pychodelics the first time I took 2 tabs of lsd because I thought the first tab wasn't hit. I got stuck in a thought loop for what felt like forever, I kept asking what time it was🤣. I've had bad trips before but never regretted taking it.
I still think most drugs should be legal, regulated and even sold like alcohol. Keep it out of the hands of dealers who cut it with dangerous stuff while making sure people are safe by having people in house to look after users. In fact having more people around to keep people safe while they have any drugs at all sounds good, even with alcohol. Safety, enjoyment and expression
I can't get past, that federal/tax money wont get thrown at this kind of drug research because it is considered too controversial, but instead will get put towards nuclear weaponry. Kind of does my head in.
Psilocybin flipped the off switch on my social anxiety like a light switch. It's effect lasted long enough that I thought it permanent. My anxiety and doubts and lack of self worth was gone. Anything that can make you love yourself should be legal.
Since I tired psychedelics for the first time, l've been trying to describe the experience to others so there can try it as well, but i couldn't find the right words to describe it.
I'm so glad this guy was honest about the microdosing data. So many of the studies include subjects that have enrolled themselves and these subjects tend to be psychedelic users anyway which may influence their perception as they have a positive attitude towards the substances already.
If I may give my example : I'm Bipolar and use microdosing (shrooms) because some part of my treatment were too strong. Did it do wonder ? No it's light. It did help combined to other treatments (for other parts of the disorder). I don't believe it does much for someone without any disorder but , at least for me, it does help for some disorders.
All LSD use causes serious irreversible permanent brain damage. If you do not do advanced mathematics on a daily basis, you will not notice the damage until it accumulates to severe levels.

My first time trying DMT, I had no idea what it was. I had no preconceived ideas or concepts of what to expect. My friend just told me that it was intense, and that I would have a short but interesting trip and might have some visuals. I was taken down into a world of small elf like people who were apparently already there although I couldn’t see them before, and they were very happy and excited to have me as a guest. They showed me their houses and how they lived. It felt like I was there for an hour or two, but when I “came back” it hadn’t been very long at all. I was very surprised and somewhat confused about how that happened; it was very unexpected! It wasn’t until years later through youtube and internet research that I started hearing about these little elves being a common theme with DMT trips. Very strange!
I feel like in 100 years humans are going to look back at what we were doing now and laugh at how stupid we were being about not studying psychedelics for medicinal applications
I think earthlings will always look back on previous generations with remorse and resent. Nepotism, narcissism, and nostalgic bias are all human nature. Hard for people to live in the present.
There's a theory that ergot fungus was the reason for the Salem witch trials. People were unknowingly consuming bread with the fungus in it after a particular wet season for crops. They started tripping and their reasoning was witchcraft.
Also look into the "stoned ape theory". The theory is basically: We got smarter (bigger brain) because we ate psychedelic mushrooms at some point in time. If nothing, it's a fun theory to think about.
Seems reasonable. Could it also have some connection with the Passover and the concern with avoiding (ergot contaminated / spiked?) leavened bread? i.e. so the "destroying angel" passes one by?
I personally know a girl who was addicted to heroin. The shaman gave her a full tumbler of Aya and told her to drink a little everyday for I think it was a week or 2. It completely cured her addiction and she is doing AMAZING now

I was a addicted to several substances at the same time. I was mostly in opioids Roxy's cocaine and heroine mostly but there were several others. I decided that I was going to mix roughly 5 grams of mdma cocaine and 5 gel tabs. I don't know the strength of the LSD but what I do know is a put a face to my addiction. I looked into the tv and I looked at myself And I began to wave and morph into this evil distorted creature and I finally got a coherent thought and it was just "I don't like you". After that I cried for 3 or 4 hours with my mother just apologizing for the way I worried them with my drug problem. Now I'm 6 months clean( except for marijuana). I'm not a saint lol

Peyote can, literally, take years to grow again once it's picked. A lot of people didn't realize that back in the 1960s, and a lot of, "Hippy" types went out to the desert and looked for patches of peyote to pick. Due to this, the Native Americans then had a very hard time finding peyote for their religious ceremonies. Not cool at all. Some people are very ignorant.

Clinical setting is not great by default: it’s too clinical. You need to feel cozy, not lights blazing in your eyes. I’m familiar with the clinical trials they did in the UK, and I wasn’t a fan of their setting either. For example, their playlist that they played for your trip was cliché hippy music. Some people like that, but I wouldn’t have a great trip with this. As an experienced tripster, I’d advise either to join a psychedelic retreat (they aren’t strictly legal, but people do them anyways, they usually have amazing settings and experienced trip sitters), or find a good friend you’d like to do it with and just go for it 😊
I don’t think clinical is necessary but in a good setting with enjoyable, trustworthy company you’ll have a good time. Just be sure you actually know what you’re taking and how much.

LSD abd mushrooms completely changed my whole outlook on life..I became a better version of myself. This experience gave me a lot of confidence about myself and a bunch of bad thought/behaviour pattern were broken. One of these was pretty bad OCD that made me wash my hands alot..it gave me a lot of hope that things will be fine, this is the one thing that I heard throughout the trip. The main reason for the trip was my severe Depression and it definitely helped me. Before all I could do was lay in bed, now I am trying to rebuild my life one step at a time which wasn't possible before.
@James Dailey I've been having constant, unbearable anxiety because of university until i met Myco_sporres ,a very intelligent mycologist who helped me.
This video has inspired me to consider going into some form of pharmacology. I’m in grade 10 right now and my best friend struggles with mental health, so knowing that there’s research to be done on things that could help others like him is incredibly motivating. Thank you for making this video
Chemical pharmacology is what you want, double major if you can in Botany, if using plants to heal interests you. Focus on math and science (good reading and writing too--you will need it to get through college and write your dissertation to get your PhD). You need Intermediate Algebra/Trig, Calculus, statistics, biology, chemistry and the like. Good luck Sophia, you got this!
Do it! I wish I was your age again and could treat my own mental health issues that manifested at age 16 with psychedelics. But at the same time I'm grateful that I'm not too old to miss the full benefits.
A small dose of shrooms cured me of depression and gave me far more peace and joy for a period of about 6months after taking them. It was beautiful, right setting and intention was important though
i started taking shrooms as well. The antidepressants were just not working for my anxiety or physical anxiety symptoms im on day 4 of microdosing and haven't felt this good in months!
i love michael pollan!!!! this guy is so smart and is able to describe these psychedelic concepts in ways normal people can understand! he's doing a big part in destroying the stigma associated with psychedelic use!
@@annaclarafenyo8185 hey buddy, absolutely no one cares what you think. and it seems you already have brain damage if this is how you talk to strangers.
@@matthewreilly4311 I can assure you that every person who has not tried LSD who reads my comments will make doubly sure to avoid brain damage. The damage is serious, severe, and cumulative.
@@annaclarafenyo8185 you keep talking despite no one asking you a question. kind of interesting. i don't know what you're so worried about, as you would need a brain to actually get brain damage.
Had a similar ego death as his, was going through a rough period freshman year of college was in my dorm and me and my friends took a few mushrooms about 2.5 grams each. And we are pretty experienced in psychedelics. At the peak of my trip, i go into my room and i saw myself sleeping on my bed, I went up to myself and I was dead. I went into the living room and started crying to my roommates. They were also on mushrooms so they gave me a hug, made me feel loved, and it is still the most life changing experience. I now am on my last year of college living a great life.
@@shadowmoon1657 it's a cactus and it grows really slowly, that's why in order to not disrupt the natural population and affect native religious practices, labs and people that want to study the plant may do it using the synthetic option or just, you know, take a long time to grow them in the lab themselves. As the comment said, it's very honorable.
Shrooms were a mental reset for me always struggled with anxiety and depression I was about 17 when my buddy gave me a full quarter oz the trip lasted 8 hours and when it wore off I went outside and the world just looked and felt so much more beautiful. It just makes you realize your life has so much more meaning then we’re brainwashed to see.
I really wish I had a shroom trip at 17, it would have given a fresh reflection and saved decades of struggle and depression, delved finally at 45 and am grateful🙏🏻
For those who are intrested. Lsd/mushrooms is a very intense experience. I would highly suggest dabbling into marijuana first (if its legal) and definitely dont think of it like the movies. Dont try it at a rave or concert for your first time. Be with a friend and listen to music. Talk. watch your favorite movies. Or be out in nature where you cant hurt yourself. All the real pros will probably agree with me. The rave stuff is cool for the experienced tripper but they know they are either tightening there seatbelts or jumping out of the plane with no parachute.

Psychedelic’s definitely have potential to deal with mental health symptoms like anxiety and depression, I would like to try them again but it’s just so hard to source here
The Trips I've been having have really helped me a lot,I finally feel in control of my emotions and my future and things that used to be mundane to me now seem incredible and full of nuance on top of that I'm way less driven by my ego and I have alot more empathy as well
I am feeling the same way too. I put too much on my plate and it definitely affects my stress and anxiety levels. I am also glad to be a part of this community.
"Category one federal drug laws mean that a drug has no accepted medical use". When cigarettes, alcohol, and caffeine are legal, I find that prohibition on any other substance completely hypocritical. Particularly since (in America at least) that every citizen has the right to the pursuit of happiness. But I guess politicians are too busy giving people the illusion of freedom instead of freedom itself.
@@LoneLoaf cigarettes and alcohol can be tho since they kill tons of people, are incredibly addictive and cause severe withdrawals, and with alcohol it makes people more likely to be violent
@@aeringothyk5445 Of course, but not to the same extreme as other drugs. Rocket Launchers can kill people, so can kitchen knives, but that doesn't mean they should be treated as equal threats.
On Peyote: It takes so long for one button to mature (think like fifty years). When you add every recreation user to the already religious user and THEN add the needs of research and pharma, there literally just is not enough of the species of cactus on this earth to both sustain itself as a species and all the greedy wants of an 'experience' let alone to fill the need of science.

Hey young adult here with ADD that went untreated for 19 years. LSD literally saved my life in the sense that I no longer had a desire to end my unbearable reality I was living. Now being 20 years old it's been a long and hard road but thankfully now I'm doing a whole lot better being treated properly by professionals and living my best life.
@@John-rk2bl ADHDer here. I've found that getting the right dose of meds makes a huge difference for me. I can't speak to 'shrooms but I recommend seeing a doctor to get meds for ADHD. In my experience coffee is counterproductive on meds. They are not magic pills but really make things a lot more manageable. Best of luck
Your brain isn't even developed yet. Stop taking psychedelics. My VERY SEVERE ADHD lessened significantly by the age of 25, and by 27 i had a solid grip in my life. It's much more related to your pre-frontal cortex development (in which you are stunted if you have ADHD) Than anything else. You should workout, meditate, and take care of your sleep schedule, and then wait until you are 25, AND THEN you can take LSD for its therapeutic benefits, but only if you have already tried therapy.
This was honestly very interesting and eye opening. I've always been against drugs since my parents are highly against them and that was the way I were raised. But now I'm starting to see more positive on it, gonna do more research.
There are some positives to occasional use of safe drugs, but LSD is NOT a safe drug, and neither are most of the psychedelics (Salvia MIGHT be safe, I don't know, it has the best chance, as it acts on completely different pathways and effects are so short, there isn't time for serious damage). Do not take LSD, this causes permanent cumulative brain damage. Do not take Ayahuasca or Psilocybin for the same reason.
Make sure if you ever do it you have a trusted friend to guide you who is familiar. Also dont have any bug plans the next day that will stress you out and be able to go outside safely if at all possible. I also recommend starting with mushrooms vs acid.
@@raeroa7982 Make sure you never do it. It makes no difference how good a friend you have with you, it doesn't matter how much fun you have, you will damage your brain.

Mushrooms are THE only thing that has had any impact on my addiction, depression and anxiety, which have had horrible impacts on my life. After breaking up with my sons mother and wishing I was dead, taking mushrooms helped me to connect more with my son and establish a new friendship and cooperative bond with my ex, feel more positive and happy, reconnect with myself and my inner child and empathise with people more, to help me see what loving someone really means and be less possessive and has renewed my interest in making music and helped me understand it better as a bonus. Nothing worked so fast, so well and with so few side-effects and at one of the lowest points in my life into the bargain, now I just take a trip once a month, I stopped using heroin and methadone completely and don't have any residual cravings, I don't even drink or use other drugs any more. I think psychedelics have the potential to create a revolution in mental health!
proud to hear this. the fact that shrooms can cause people to quit HEROIN is insane. i still haven't done a big dose yet to where something that impactful happened but i am 100% looking forward to it
@@dennismoore4977 if you're worried about taking a massive dose, just increase your normal dose by a gram each time you decide to trip until you finally reach what you're looking for. Sometimes you don't end up needing a big of a dose as you might think to come to some sort of realization.
Michael Pollan is such an important figure within the psychedelic academia. He somehow manages to explain the inexplicable in an approachable way and that is an important element of the foundation of integrating psychedelics into society. Taking psych classes and learning how antidepressants and other medicines that effect neurotransmitters makes you realize how little we know about the brain
I can testify to the machine elves! I had never heard of them, neither had any of my friends when we got a hold of a lot of pure DMT in 2006. I had 2 profound , extreme experiences with the elves. I’d never heard of McKenna and had 0 expectations of DMT going in other than knowing it was smokable, like LSD, quick onset, short duration, heavy. That was all. We were all so confused when we heard about Mckennas machine elves, and of the many other people who had the same visions
I find it comforting. Ive had conversations with folks that mirrored my own experiences. I know Several people that have met the Great Mantis while tripping on Salvia.
@@notasim374 Yeah, Its sad that they get such harsh push back. I guess its all about control. Ive come to appreciate then Scientific fact that We are atoms and all atoms are connected in some way. @@redneckhippiefreak It's about brain damage. LSD causes brain damage. Ayahuasca causes brain damage. Salvia MIGHT be safe, but it requires a lot of clinical studies and a mathematically trained person willing to take a dose once a month for five years.

Oh. I didn't know LSD mimicked serotonin. As someone who actually responds very poorly to serotonin, that's good to know. I've never done drugs, but now if I get the urge, I know probably not a good idea to give LSD a shot.
The more you know! What kind of serotonin influencing drugs have you used before? I’ve noticed I reacted super bad to citalopram (SSRI) but just dandy to paroxetine (also an SSRI). So who knows, every brain is different and every drug is different too. We’re so far behind on understanding this stuff, science better get on it!
I have to say your logic doesn't really make sense. But I'm not trying to argue. I just wouldn't want you to miss out on somthing that can be wonderful because of a misconception. I'm not sure what you mean by not responding well to serotonin but LSD only mimics it in the sense that it has a similar shape... the molecule is made up of mainly the same atoms connected in a similar pattern. This allows it to bind to some of the same receptors in your brain (kinda like a key fits into a lock) but the small differences in pattern, witch atom is where, means that it has a completely different effect. I'm not saying you should take LSD Im just saying you shouldn't expect it to effect you in a similar to serotonin.
@@Travel_8 Psilocybin is a serotonergic psychedelic drug, which means it primarily functions by manipulating serotonin. For all the reasons I've written in the replies... No thank you. I don't fancy myself another flying off the handle moment followed by attempted suicide again, thanks. I almost lost my kidneys last time, and I kind of like those li'l guys. You know how all those SSRIs warn about increased thoughts or risk of suicide in some patients? When I say I don't react well to serotonin, that is what I mean. Don't assume something that is great for you will be a good fit for someone else. Enjoy it if it helps you, but understand it's not an option for everyone.
Well everyone needs and has serotonin in their brain to varying levels ofc so I don't think you respond bad to serotonin but maybe you meant to SSRIs? I took a genesight test and was found to have a short allele on one of my serotonin receptors that SSRIs target so SSRIs aren't as effective for me, maybe you experience this?
