Find success on your thru-hike with these expert-level tips.
These tips, tricks and hacks are derived from my thru-hikes of the Benton McKaye Trail, the Bartram Trail, the Foothills Trail, the Sheltowee Trace, and the Appalachian Trail.
In this video, I discuss physical preparation before the hike (running, walking, hills, stair machines, and balance), food and re-supply, bounce boxes, laundry, and "the mental part."
Stay tuned for more videos as I get ready to hike the Colorado Trail in July!

I’d be interested in a detailed video on the bounce box (I doubt many others would though) because I would like to thru hike the AT in 4-5 years but I am diabetic and have daily medical needs. There’s no way I can carry a full supply of meds, insulin and needles and would rather use a bounce box to only carry what I need plus a little extra.

In your food comparisons, you are converting grams to ounces, and then comparing those to the container's fluid ounces. The problem is that the former (ounces) are units of dry weight, while the latter (fluid ounces) are units of liquid volume. A fluid ounce does not weigh the same as an ounce of weight.

I just started watching your videos, and have one question that may have already been answered: did you struggle to find suitable spots to pitch a large-ish tarp on the AT? I'm trying to decide between the 6x9 Borah tarp, and a large one that would provide better protection from rain.
@EvansBackpackingVideos
@EvansBackpackingVideos 9 месяцев назад
Mine was 8.5 foot square and there was no problem. I prefer square tarps because there are more ways to pitch them. Another point: with a larger tarp, or any tarp, you aren’t required to use all the material in a set-up. Some can be tucked underneath if not used in a pitch, etc.

e wolf...kinda agree but also disagree. flatlander....did some training....but not enough. i found the trail easy. people geek out on stuff too much. i could carry a 75 pound pack the entire way without problem . injury is the greatest obstacle...but even with injury...the trail is still doable. sailor jack

Watch out for velcro or hook and loop when washing everything together because it will destroy delicate things like base layers and socks. The delicates will find the velcro in the washer and dryer.

Had to quit my AT hike because of snow somewhere in Maine, however I managed to walk from Mexiko to Canada as a holiday from the AT on the PCT (2600 miles) and from Canada down to the windriver range on the CDT (all in 2022, 5500 miles in total). My two cent towards this video: Don't eat Spam and Tuna, when claiming to have thought about your nutrition. If in doubt, go to GearSkeptic here on YT.
@EvansBackpackingVideos
@EvansBackpackingVideos Год назад
Haha, I don’t disagree! In this video, I used the word “nutrition” only to mean food as opposed to water-as in, “a feeding tube gives her both nutrition and water.” I did another video specifically about diet, which you may or may not agree with, but I filled it from top to bottom with caveats because I don’t like to preach about food. Now, let’s talk about you, as a hiker I mean. I’m obviously not half the hiker you are-not that I’m competitive like that. I always say I’m just a backpacker who thru-hikes now and then and got lucky enough to finish the AT. You on the other hand have done tons of stuff: I’d be interested in hearing YOUR tips and tricks. If you’ve posted them on Instagram please let me know. Thanks.

@EvansBackpackingVideos
@EvansBackpackingVideos Год назад
There weren't many ticks the year I hiked the AT. As for sandals, I'd say the ticks don't care whether you're wearing sandals, shoes, or boots. In all cases, they're looking to climb up your leg.

What about hiking in Lunas!! I hike (AT sections) and run exclusively in Lunas...except when it's below 35 and raining or snow. Begrudgingly had to come up with a shoe solution for that. Trying the Xero Mesa's with wool socks and WP socks over that. Found this the closest thing to the Lunas....no arch support, little cushion, and still can feel the ground. 2 questions: 1. How many Lunas did you go through on the AT? Guessing fewer than the standard Altras 2. Do you have a "shoe solution" for snow or close to freezing wet conditions? ...I get all the same questions I think you got..."are you hiking in flip flops?" and "don't you stub your toes?"

a caloric gram is NOT the same as a gram of weight!
@EvansBackpackingVideos
@EvansBackpackingVideos Год назад
Sorry if my explanation was confusing, but I didn’t mention “calories” in this video. I talked about the gram weight of macronutrients (fat, protein, carbohydrate) but not of calories. Another example of the method I explained for estimating the water contents of foods is in this article at Scientific American, with emphasis on the last section, “Observations and Results.” www.scientificamerican.com/article/food-sleuthing-find-the-missing-ingredient/ Thanks
