It's interesting the difference between the wave menu in different venues. In november, we had the opening of our wavegarden in South Brazil, it's called Surfland. We don't have expert turns, only expert barrels. And, T3 along B4, is still not available in any session. We have advanced (T1 and T4), Advanced plus (T2, straight to B1), and recently, they opened a full T4 and full B3 sessions. I feel like the right is mellower than the left. Does that make sense to you? Being a goofy footer, I only had one session on the right. It could be the wind, but the T4 was not barreling at all, and both advanced sessions I had on the left every T4 wave had a well-defined tube. Apart from that, turning was way easier on the backhand (maybe I'm used to the pool by now). The next step is getting berraled on the right. The most fun thing is the atmosphere in the water. It's rare to get that in the ocean, and we can really feel the progression after each session. It's impossible to get out of the water with a big smile. I was really skeptical of the wave quality. And don't get me wrong, I live in a very wave rich area. But having tried the thing now, I can say I'm a converted fan, and I wish I could surf every wavegarden cove on the planet. Just to get the feel of the local vibe and culture. Thank you for your posts. It's hard to find what wave is available in each session, so thank you for that insight.

I think you've just nailed it. The wave pool can create over 1000 types of waves but clearly they only sell a handful. There are some small differences between the left and right as how the "snake" starts impacts how the waves are pushed out. With regards to the barrel, B1 setting, there are some interesting thoughts out there. Backwash / Currents are the main issue, being in the top half of the group seems to help as currents are less. Wind does come into play but because of the design of the pool, it isn't such a big deal as the winds tend to get funnelled in an offshore direction (but clearly if it's fully onshore then this doesn't happen). And then there is what you do on the wave before it starts barrelling....... flame away internet.... :) Not that I've surfed B2-4 but apparently the foam ball is farther back, it throws more like the ocean and the wave 'not barrelling' isn't an issue. One of the best points is the attitude and vibe in the pool. It's great to watch others surf, speak to people as you wait and have such a relaxed atmosphere. Not often like this in the sea. "But having tried the thing now, I can say I'm a converted fan" Yeah, because you get a ton of waves on tap and it's an incredible training facility. The hate tends to come from people who have never been, had bad sessions and felt silly so don't want to go back and from Internet keyboard warriors that post obvious comments like "surfing should be free / in the sea'. no big deal, everyone has their opinion, but for those that don't live right next to a break and have to pay $$$$ to drive around, on food and accommodation to get "free" waves then it's pretty clear that going to a place where you're guaranteed waves to ride is a win win. Thanks for the post, really appreciate you making it!

@@ETYSURF 2 in a day is more than possible but as long as your fit and fed up to it. The intermediate is actually supper good. More waves are pushed per set, so you can get around three times if it isn’t busy. Smart move not going for something crazy on the first visit. Loads to take onboard

@@averagejoe6355 that would be great cheers. On another note have you ridden the advanced plus since they reopened this year? They seem to have made the take off almost the same as the normal advanced. I missed the first few waves as I was too far away from the wall and couldn't believe it was that easy.

@@chrispowell9971 I have. Since they did the maintenance work and fixed the bottom of the pool, it seems they have tweaked the wave settings a little bit. Hard to tell but it did seem like there was a bit more push / face to the wave. Best asking a staff member. Just email contact at Hodi.tv and will send a link to a shared folder so you can down load the session

I was chatting to a lifeguard and he mentioned they are trying different water levels in the pool. This might be causing some of the variation.

Hey Joe, I'm planning to go and surf the wave. I'm a professional surfer, I want to make the most out there cause I will be spending only one wave. Which type of wave should I choose and any boards advisory?
@averagejoe6355
@averagejoe6355 Год назад
Ok, so a few things to think about.... Expert Barrels: 1st turn / wave face before the barrel is the best face to do a turn on IMHO Barrel is good but the B1 setting has it's now little details to understand too. B2-4 aren't available to the public at the moment Expert Turns: Biggest and most powerful wave settings, but can be a bit unruly / bumpy, particularly the 2nd 1/2 of the set Advanced Plus: isn't as big as Expert Turns but because less water is moving in the pool, the faces can be cleaner Left / Right: R waves are slightly bigger, but L waves have slightly better faces in the mid section (why? that's how the snake of paddles sends the waves out, and because of the wall angle on the left side of the bay) Day: weekend is buys which means packed sessions, not as chilled, mixed range of skills etc... If you go mid week when it's less busy, then if you are in positions 1-5 in the line up and the session isn't full then you can get 2 waves in a set, not just 1. Barrel Setting: less waves per set and it's nearly (it is doable) impossible to get a double, but you do need to be 1st in the line up really. Other info: waves 1-2 are slightly smaller, but they are cleaner. Waves 3-4 always pretty good. Wind can screw up the wave faces a bit and there is a really interesting discussion about why some waves barrel and other ones don't... happy to share that info too. If you're going for one wave session then I'd say Barrels, it's just a really fun wave. You say you're a pro so won't have any issues, but FYI, 1st session is always weird for everyone, you just need to find the set up point that is working for you and get a few waves in the bag. I've seen pro's and very experienced surfers struggle in their first session, it's just a bit of a random experience first time.

@@averagejoe6355 haha yea unfortunately im visiting from London so I did have to cram a lot of sessions over a few days. I did go to the wavepool in early March and was fine doing 4 hours in a single day, spaced out within the day. Hopefully I luck out with some warmer weather this time. Ill be there April 15-18, mostly doing intermediate sessions.

@@PicopicoEMD 4 sessions in a day is a lot! You are a machine. 2 a day is what I can manage now when I visit. Have tried 3 but found I need to be super current in the water and comfortable with what I’m doing. If I’m rusty then everything is just that bit harder. But it’s so easy to book loads of sessions as when you are away from the water all you can think about is surfing as much as possible!

You're very stiff with no compression or extension. I would highly recommend getting a carving skateboard and practice flow carving on flat ground. You should be able to keep moving by weaving with compression and extension. Really drive with your legs through your board.
