About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Our groundbreaking educational content reaches millions of people every month. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

I lived on the streets of Las Vegas for three months after losing my job and home because my spine got damaged and I could not afford rent. To stay at one of the shelters we homeless had to all gather across the street and wait while the disabled homeless were allowed in first. Then security would signal and all of us homeless people - in a flock, had to cross the street and form a line to get a bed for the night. We called it the Chicken Run. Police who needed a few wins for the week would sometimes arrest a person or two for jaywalking - to fill their ticket quota or whatever. I don't do drugs and neither did 1/2 the homeless I met at the shelters - they were good, decent people who got fucked by the system and didn't know how to recover. There are not enough people willing to help..

At age 18 my niece was hit by a repeat drunk driver and became a tetraplegic in an instant. No movement from the chest down, no hand movement, limited arm movement, pain each and every day. She worked her butt off to overcome the obstacles put in front of her, worked hard, put herself through law school, graduated with honors, and went on to earn herself a great job. She recently bought her first home, hasn't even turned 30 yet, and did it all from a wheelchair without taking a dime of taxpayer money. Stop making excuses for your own poor choices

Sadly, having come from a family without a mother, and always on the edge of homeless or being homeless, this is more ordinary than anyone will or wants to admit. Poverty itself, or allowing vulnerable populations to be exploited, used, and discarded like objects is the worst of all crimes, and seems to be all too common in modernized cultures. There will always be vultures exploiting and abusing people that have no other options... And, the traumas from these events don't just magically disappear to be bootstrapped and overcome...
@civirebel
@civirebel 2 месяца назад
And, unfortunately, too many people are taught to devalue other's trauma, in order to impersonalize it. When we should all be working together in order to ensure that others don't have to go through the unnecessary traumas that housing and life insecurities give us. We are all on the same team, allowing the abuse and exploitation of any populations is a crime unto all of us, and for those who believe otherwise, are how we got in this mess...

Here in Oklahoma, a majority of homeless are drug addicts and are violent (my son deals with them every day as an EMT). There are resources available for them to get help. We've tried housing, and the housing gets trashed. Because of the violence against the police, medical, and shelter personnel, those who are violent need to be locked up. However, because of their mental health, they can't be arrested. There is no longer a state-run mental institution in the OKC metro area, so they are released on the street. How do you help those who do not want help? Housing First has not worked here. What do we do now?
@brixan...
@brixan... 2 месяца назад
You mentioned lack of mental health resources, and in the end asked how to help those who "don't want help." Hopefully it goes without saying that mentally ill people don't necessarily "not want" help. After separating those two groups, maybe some money? A basic income study in Denver, CO is showing good results: the number of people housed increased by over 25% within 6 months (35% in the lump sum group). If this world is going to be all about money, giving money to the poorest people could help.

@@brixan... I guess that you misunderstood what I was trying to say. Yes, we have good, not great, mental health resources for those who want it. It is the violent, drug-addicted homeless that I was describing. For example, their behavior is atrocious. One homeless camp was living under a bridge of a major interstate highway. They had to be moved because they were setting fire to the bridge for no reason. That is the type of homeless people that is becoming more and more prevalent here in Oklahoma City.

And also what are states doing with all the HUD money they were given in May of this year. Track that down. Not one cent should be going towards staff. Staff can have a raise, when all homeless are housed. Every state has land, what happened to tiny homes for homeless. UnHCR are goving out(500 million😮) cash, money cards to illegals coming into US, and Americans are sitting here homeless. Food, etc daily is being given to Muslims in gaza. What about the homeless here, what could that UN money do for the homeless here? Homes, food, reentry into society. Start reguthe homeless community to vote don't wait, there is still time. "Too many rules" Like no drugs or alcohol. Our city reps also started a work program for vagrants, $15/hr CASH to pick up litter along the road. It also included free transportation to/from shelter and three "free" meals plus snacks. The program was scrapped after just weeks because almost no one took the opportunity, of the few that did most left after the first day, some even left during the first day. When asked "why" the vagrants said they had to show up sober and that they could make far more money standing at an off-ramp or intersection in less time. But yea it's everyone else's fault but theirs 🤣

@@ponolovefarms3926 I do not believe a public park is place for anyone to set up a tent. I agree that some of these people are drug users and some of them just want to do whatever they feel like regardless of how it affects the community at large. I would hate to live close to them. But then there are some that really need housing assistance.

My government officials wanted to give law enforcement more money, this was after they got brand new barracks, brand new police cruisers, brand new bikes and now i have to pay for a brand new hospital helicopter with my car registration which is going to be double the next time i have to pay it. I just sent them an email saying that they should stop giving police more money and start investing in welfare programs/housing. They ask for more and more money for police and the supposed crime just keeps going up, almost like police don't prevent crime. They even have a frickin branch at the local community college. Now mind you we are not a heavily populated city, the worst crime we have only happens once or twice a year, yet i couldn't get only one police car to help me with my car accident because the phone system is crap at the call center, another cop car came after the first car was leaving. They can send six cops to harass two unarmed people who are just standing outside McDonald's and face no consequences.

We are all human, people with "power" control and make decisions for everyone and everything, they give wild life a home and laws of protection and so . we that experience homelessness or poverty for any reason aren't given a home ,and we are human beings, we are persecuted daily by police for just trying to survive and we are vulnerable to violence , and elements of the outside conditions, help us homeless who ask for help, not those who choose to be in the street is a start, because then those individuals will just go back to the street wasting resources from us that appreciate and need it, replace all of these shelter and homeless workers with people who care because they treat us like we are in jail , treat us like inmates, treat us disrespectful, and they are impatient , I need help 😢 i try so hard i keep applying for jobs , im homeless it's not easy to get showered and stay clean , no where to store your belongings , it's tiring walking everywhere, and lastly we need better managersat work because they are perverts who only treat young women very nice and the rest of us men like trash , facts facts facts, and i never had a hotel voucher but i know that all these drug addicts in phoenix have wth . I don't do drugs.

Or any ACTUAL crime or JUST BEING HOMELESS? Thats the point you yourself made. Its legal to arrest people for just being homeless. If you lost everything tomorrow, by your OWN definition... Cruelty Dehumanization Homelessness Poverty..."Such things must be and the end is not yet." (Matthew 24:6) At least it won't end when you want it to - that is, when you think it cannot get any worse. But lest you think there will be NO END to the "injustice": "I will fill Hell with jinn and humans all, a multitude from every community." (32:13 Quran) The '"injustice" will end when the crime has fit the punishment - an eternal punishment. If the punishment has no limit what will limit the crime? What will stop the "injustice"? "But the day of The Lord will come like a thief in the night. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements [atoms] will disintegrate in flames, and the Earth and everything in it will be laid bare." (2nd Peter 3:10) And many will realize on that Day that The Earth never had been their True Home as the Quran had made quite clear in the 7th Century A.D. "Earthly life is not The True Life." (29:64 Quran)
