Grants Pass' Insane Approach to Homelessness: Moving Day Madness

Discover the shocking reality of how Grants Pass is handling homelessness in one of the most inhumane ways imaginable. Homeless individuals are forced to move from park to park every few days, facing constant disruption and instability. This insane policy not only fails to address the root causes of homelessness but also exacerbates the problem, making it harder for people to get back on their feet.
Now, Grants Pass' approach to criminalizing homelessness is under scrutiny by the Supreme Court. This landmark case could set a precedent for how cities across the nation treat their homeless populations. Instead of providing the necessary housing and support services, Grants Pass is choosing a path that only increases the number of homeless encampments.
The only effective way to reduce and ultimately eliminate homeless encampments is through housing and comprehensive support services. Criminalizing homelessness does nothing but make the situation worse. Learn more about this pressing issue and how you can support real solutions that work.
Grants Pass is currently at the center of a Supreme Court case that could determine the legality of criminalizing homelessness. This case is crucial as it highlights the need for systemic changes in how cities address homelessness. The evidence is clear: the only way to permanently remove homeless encampments is through housing and supportive services. Criminalizing homelessness will only lead to larger encampments and greater suffering. It's time to adopt evidence-based solutions and address the affordable housing crisis to ensure a more humane and effective response to homelessness.
If you don't want to see tents by your park or house, support real solutions. Evidence-based solutions like housing with support services will permanently remove encampments. For more information about how to fight the criminalization of homelessness, go to housingnothand.... We know how to solve homelessness, but we need the political and public will to make it happen. Your support is crucial.

About Invisible People
Invisible People works to change public perceptions of homelessness and influence policy change. Many people mistakenly blame homelessness on individuals rather than systemic issues like affordable housing shortages, unemployment, childhood trauma, and insufficient wages. This misunderstanding hampers efforts to address homelessness effectively.
Our vision is a world where everyone has a home. We aim to fight homelessness by humanizing it and educating people about the systemic issues behind it. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are shifting the narrative on homelessness.
Our impactful educational content reaches millions monthly, breaking stereotypes and prompting action from governments, brands, nonprofits, and individuals. Yet, the fight continues as homelessness remains a major societal issue that requires immediate action.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since 2008, we’ve been a pioneering and trusted resource in North America and the UK, inspiring action and dialogue around poverty.

While Grant Pass is a tragedy and an embarrassment, is there a reason you ignore the homeless in the rest of Americas cities? As a subscriber, I am seeing only videos on this one place. I am also not seeing any advocacy that involves solutions. There is a lot to criticize here, but advocacy doesn't start and end with criticism.

I'm on disability and use section 8 to subsidize my rent, I'm worried that I'll be pushed out of the market and become homeless with the way things are going. Certain law makers are always calling for cuts to housing and food programs and some law makers are now openly proposing bills that either cut or sunset social security income which will make homeless worse because many of us, especially senior citizens, either have no family left to move in with or have family but can't take anyone in.

Don't hold your breath with this Supreme Court. If you look at the criminalization of homelessness just a thought is that one person in jail or prison is worth x amount. A free person is worth zero. It's far more profitable to institutionalize people than it is to help them. Sad fact but it is a fact. The only way out of this is for people to help people. Federal money thrown at cities to solve this issue should be used to purchase apartment buildings or build them and rent them out to these suffering souls.

@@starrleesimmons4291 Are you saying homeless drug addicts and alcoholics don't exist. The narrative about homeless drug addicts and homeless alcoholics persists because there are enough loud obvious examples to re-enforce the stereotype. The problem with stereotypes is it only takes seeing one to confirm a harmful bias that may be incorrect. The homeless guy that looks like you is one of this channels true "Invisible People." The homeless people you see are the loud mouthed, obnoxious, aggressive panhandling dope addicts and drunks trying to score money. We had a subway station near my work. We used to call it "The Gauntlet" because to leave the station you had to endure the pleadings of 20 homeless beggars trying to get food, money or cigarettes from you. I figured out the best way to get through unscathed was to never make eye contact, keep moving, move fast with purpose, never walk a straight line, zig and zag, never answer any questions, wear a tight fitting thick leather jacket and don't wear loose fitting clothes. I found if you do what I just said enough the homeless don't even bother to try to confront you anymore. My coworkers marveled at the fact the homeless never harassed me at all. Lady office workers used to meet me on the train so they could walk through the gauntlet unmolested with me. In cities dealing with aggressive pan handlers you have to send that leave me alone, lone wolf vibe!

Ya know when I was homeless I lived in the woods behind a gas station with a group of about 15 others AND the sheriff knew we were back there because they came every day with 2 cases of water and what ever food they could get donated for us. Several of the officers who visited regularly complement us on how clean our camp was. It's because we kept our camp picked up and did the yard work daily. We hauled out our trash to the dumpster behind the gas station AFTER we got permission from the gas station owner to off load our trash there rather than carry it half a mile to the bus stop trash bins. I was only in the woods camp spot for approx 4 months b4 I found, through a friend, a safe back yard where my dog and myself could set up camp and be safe from attempts to break in the tents during work hours. I worked full time but wasn't making enough to afford an apartment or studio without it leaving me completely broke. How low can people go, well apparently low enough to make a homeless persons life miserable and degrading if they're willing to make a law requiring someone move every 3 days. Let them have to move house every 3 days and see how they like it. Love your videos. Keep reminding ppl that homeless ppl have feelings too and not all of them do drugs or drink either!

A Section 8 certificate used to be the golden ticket. I know because I was once on disability \ SSI and Section 8 for 18 years. Back when I was on Section 8, apartments in the run down low rent parts of Baltimore were plentiful. Everyplace that took Section 8 vouchers was pure ghetto but I had a roof over my head. BUT NOW in 2024 a Section 8 Voucher is not so much the golden ticket to housing it was in my day. Today it's possible to get a Section 8 voucher look for three months and find NOTHING available ANYWHERE for the fair market rent the voucher covers. Most apartments available today are luxury units that cost more and aren't Section 8 approved. Affordable housing is not Invisible, it's rare!

There is no way to stay within a reasonable walking distance to maintain employment when they’re bouncing around like that. Also, to see so many elderly and handicapped people in tents is beyond disturbing. Not only do we need affordable housing, we also need special housing for those on social security and disability. The problem with "invisible people" is that they're all too visible--along with their tents, garbage, sewage, discarded needles, condoms, etc. Why should Grant's Pass be forced to lose its public parks? I applaud the city's efforts to resist the degradation of its public spaces.

One thing most cities don't mention. I live in NH close to Manchester. A big city. Lots of homeless. If the city built a shelter for lets say 100 people it would fill up quick. Then word would get out and 100 more would show up and it would be non stop.

Most homeless people don't like congregate shelter facilities at all. There is usually crime, drugs, rape, dehumanization and other vile things waiting for homeless people in shelters. Trust me shelters are not a long term solution. Shelters are NOT that appealing if you ever slept in one.

The only logic I can find in the rotating park model system Grant's Pass uses lets them properly deep clean each park after only light abuse \ damage. If encampments stay too long in one place it's overrun with trash, needles, feces, vermin and more. If encampments stay too long you need armies of bobcats and dump trucks to clean it. Grant's Pass avoids old sofa's, large heavy furniture, 1,000's of stolen bikes, mattresses and more entering the park by never letting encampments to stay in one place too long. Keeping encampments of un-housed vulnerable people clean and healthy is a major expensive undertaking. Grants Pass is NOT Los Angeles, it's a tiny town. I feel the pain on both sides of the issue. P.S. What's wrong with religious services in exchange for clean dry beds inside?! My brother was homeless in the 1980's. Together we went to missions. Said the nightly compulsory memory verses. Listened to mush mouth minsters preach at us. Ate nasty food to get a nasty funky sleeping mat inside. It beat freezing to death on cold Baltimore Streets on dark Winter Nights. What turned us off about missions was LICE! Ewwwe! Homeless people today demand nights at the posh Hyatt Regency for their "dignities sake." Get real!

If the man that said if you don't find an apartment within 6 months you lose your voucher. If he's talking about section 8 they will give extensions for you. I got 5 or 6 extensions and on the last month with a week left on my extension I was called for an apartment went and looked at it and took it and still living in it on my 3rd year. You have keep contacting the apartments you apply at while you're on their waiting list. One thing that isn't working are those so called mini homes you don't get to live in them for long then you go back to the streets and making people move from one park to another is stupid. The city needs to pay for the housing for each homeless person until they get an apartment with section 8.

That’s God’s work for her perfect answer Connie. Just think with this world would be like with Christ in peoples lives that know what they’re supposed to do? This country has no heart, in general. There are good people out there that care. But as a whole, this country is a cesspool. Whenever I see you, I think of that video you did, I think was it Greenland, they modeled a program called Homes First idea for it came from the United States. That just blows my mind when I think about that, looked like it was working there. They sure didn’t implement it here in this country. But to be completely honest, people do need to hear the gospel that’s what this world needs. But first you feed people give them what they need and then show them what real Christianity is.

This grants pass Oregon? I live in Medford and the homeless is getting insane. Ever since they basically legalized drugs Oregon has had a huge spike in people coming here. Not all homeless is on drugs but it’s definitely caused a huge up spike. People get hooked on fentynal because it’s so cheap it’s a dollar a pill and some dealers will even say they are out to up charge the addicts and squeeze every cent out of them. I’ve had people knock on my windows to ask if I can buy them computer cleaner and I’m like no but I can buy you food but some won’t take the food. I’d love to see help for families so they can stay together and if they can pass drug tests than they can stay up to a year and it’s free so they can save money so they can get they own place. I often wonder what’s the answer though. I live in a low income apartment and I’ll see people move in and they only gotta pay 28 bucks a month and they get evicted or they lose there kids because the state steps in but they constantly have money for the drugs and the apartment becomes a trap house. Prostitution starts, the neighbors all start talking to get rid of the problem because there cars start to get broke into or there own apartments get broke into. I wish I knew the answers tbh. As someone who is disabled and been seeing this type of life since I was born I’ve seen it all.

It's not drugs. It's the rising cost of housing. West Virginia has the highest per capita drug use of any state in the country however it has low homelessness. Why? Because they have affordable housing. With every hundred-dollar increase in median rent, homelessness increases by 9%. The reason homelessness is growing is we have an affordable housing crisis.

@@InvisiblePeople - Hi Mark - I'm not sure West Virginia is the best example to use to try to prove your point. In 2022 (the last year for which I could find figures), they had the third highest rate of poverty in the nation, and were also the only state to show an increase in child poverty. West Virginia housing isn't "affordable" due to some purposeful effort or policy - housing prices are determined by what the market will bear. With such a high poverty rate, rental rates are inevitably going to be depressed, particularly in rural areas. If they were to experience an economic resurgence, housing prices would rise and people would start losing their housing, and the first group to go would be the addicts, many/most of whom are probably severely underemployed at best. Point being that the conditions in West Virginia are not something to aspire to, or that can credibly serve as proof that drugs aren't a significant contributor to homelessness. That all being said, I really do appreciate the work that you are doing, helping to humanize a population that too many have simply written off, if not outright demonized. I, like you, want better for these folks, even if my ideas differ somewhat from yours on the best way to achieve that.
