EXPLAINED || Phyllis Hyman's Voice 

Clive Davis did that with Patrice Rushen too. Thankfully, the music community gave her opportunities to create music. It's such a shame that Clive Davis did not encourage Phyllis Hyman's "Sophisticated Ladies" success. Imagine, he actually tried to make her think her being nominated for a Tony, would hurt her music career. As I comment on that fact today, I recognize the complete insanity of his behavior!

@@roxannesantoro7503, that's two more reasons why I wish she had a longer career. In anything! Not just because of her vocal talent. Her combination of statue (height) and physical beauty would enhance any movie and/or TV show or mini series. Another beautiful tall woman is Tamara Dobson (6'2"). I really wish she had more movies to her credit. Two tall beautiful women. Gone far too soon.

If you get a chance to read Phyllis' autobiography, "Strength Of A Woman," you'll know that she suffered from mental illness, if fact it was Bipolar Disorder. But addressing it or not, it took over her life. Nobody pushed to to commit suicide; it was her illness. Her antidepressants as well antipsychotics made her worse. She wound up taking medicines that are normally prescribed for schizophrenics. So, standing up for herself, kissing ass to no one, or whatever, she was very mentally ill. I was so blessed to see her in concert some 15 times 13 years (in and around San Francisco). There were times (I found out after her death in her book) that she could go on stage and do a 90-minute concert, sing her butt off, bring the audience to its knees, and then go off to the backstage dressing rooms, pick up an electric bass guitar, throw it 15 feet across the room, all because someone ate the last of the frenchfries. Also, whenever she would have a hectic tour, having to wake up in a different hotel in a different city every other day brought, dread and bouts of paranoia. What a most beautiful and talented woman she was, but also what a psychologically tormented soul also.

Phyllis Hyman is that rare talent every bit as beautiful physically as her singing is musically. To me, her beauty is unique. As is her gifted talent.

There was suppose to be one. I know Maysa was vying for the rules probably over 15 years ago. Jasmine Sullivan would probably be good for the role now. Read her biography "Strength of a Woman," you won't be able to put it down😐

Although I would be grateful for any artistic creation about Phyllis Hyman, I seriously doubt the creative talent in the film industry. The last movie I really liked was "Ali", directed by Michael Mann. His skill with music on the soundtracks from his movies are really good.

Phyllis Hyman was a phenomenal vocalist very few vocalist today could match the talent Ms.Hymn posessed

The follow-up album, "I Refuse To Be Lonely," which was released posthumously, featured a song titled, "This Too Shall Pass" - a very haunting song. This song also mirrors much of what she was going through in her life. It's on RU-vid. Check it out.

that was the song that introduced me to her music, it's haunting because I could relate so much to the emotion and pain in her voice.

As a fan yes her songs mirrored her feelings which made her so phenomenal the depth and the soul you can just wanna hug her!! She is/was ICONIC!! Untouchable ya dig!!

@@Rosannasfriend I wouldn't call it a reupload. Remake is more accurate. This version focuses more on vocal pedagogy and the technique behind her voice, as well as her jazz background. I don't remember this level of detail on the previous version.

This focuses on her vocal style and ability. If you want to know about the real Phyllis, read her book, "Strength Of A Woman." She was mentally ill; diagnosed as bi-polar and borderline schizophrenic. I saw her many times in concert, and you'd never ever know it. Where everyone who was close to her, as well as those who worked very closely with her, WOULD witness it - see it, hear it, and FEEL it - was backstage. Toward her final days, her mental illness(es) would cause her to take up abusing alcohol, drugs, and food. But what was messing up her voice was SMOKING. In her more slender years, she would weight around 160± pounds (remember, she was 6'-1"). And in her book it is indicated that at one point she reached some 325 pounds (see her in this video @21:52).

....she loved to sew....she rocked other designers work...costume designers too....but she loved to SEW.....so you KNOW she was going to be TURNED OUT...her album covers are a serious lesson in SOPHISTICATION....

@@BlackMusicArchive ....have you heard her JAMES BOND theme song that was overlooked for another singer's version....a very sad moment in her career....PHYLLIS was also basically the 1st PLUS SIZED MODEL....she sewed her butt off and during that period in fashion a lot of the haute couturiers made sewing patterns....and she rocked them all ....with a serious fetish for HALSTON....during his ruffle period...she was also one of the 1st people to book the make up artist...REGGIE WELLS...who went on to become award winning and legendary for doing over a hundred cover issues of ESSENCE MAGAZINE....his iconic work with OPRAH for DECADES....and of course IMAN....PATTI....ANITA....WHITNEY....and BEYONCE...among many others...PH...was also known for her HATS....and DEEP PLUNGING NECKLINES.....smile....she was also very popular in the world of DRAG because of her smoky voice....when drag queens would perform her numbers the money would flow...SHE was INCREDIBLE in SOPHISTICATED LADIES....and no her label....with CLIVE DAVIS....did NOT like her doing the musical...maybe a combination of divided focus....or keeping her under his reins...however your video is just EXCELLENT....and yes i did learn somethings.....i have a very special place in my heart for her....the DIVA....that rocks the TORCH SONGS....that the DUKE...would approve of....

Once Clive Davis found Whitney Houston, Phyllis Hyman and Angela Bofield were dropped when their contracts came for renewal.
