YAAAASSSSSSS!!! Thank you so much for this episode on Sylvester! Talk about somebody who wasn’t afraid to be their true authentic self! Not only are they celebrated as a gay icon and Disco/Hi-NRG pioneer, but he gave singers like Martha Wash, Izora Rhodes, and Jeanie Tracy a platform to show off their vocal prowess in an industry that overlooked women that didn’t fit the supermodel aesthetic in the 80s and 90s. Gone, but not forgotten, Sylvester laid the groundwork for many black queer artists of today 💐💐💐

I loved him. You hear me. My brother and sister were friends of his. I was a little to young to hang out with them. They talked about the after party and Sylvester. And how the people would go absolutely crazy when he sang Nick & Valaries “ Over and Over”. To date when I play it. I get so ecstatic I also cry. Go figure. I finally got old enough to hand out at the Paradise Garage where The infamous Larry Lavan would be mixing. We never waited in that cray line. We went straight to the front andwent right in. It never really dawned on me that most nights we were there it was only men hmm 🤔 but Saturday was crazy packed and it was a mix. We would go In there around 2-3am and leave the next morning around 10-11 am. Kid you not. Was pitch black in there. With disco lights. You have to cover your eyes when you came out. There was plenty beverage and watermelon fruits bowls. I could eat Or drink anything. But there was one table I could not dare touch or drink anything from. And few rooms I could not go in. My brother was is my hero. He protected me! He did not deny his preference and he did not announce it. For a very long time. I love him to the moon and back. I Miss him Terrible.

@gobabe2396
@gobabe2396 2 года назад
@@sistamaryclarence - Yass! The live version is the only version as far as it goes for me. The ultimate party. Grab your whistle and let’s go! If you can handle the 12mins you were in good shape and form. Especially- since the tempo is very fast. L Larry (D.JJ.) he could mix a a 5-15 long play for hours. He would play one dance song and just drop a hint of what was coming up. Anticipation made it barely bearable. You are all positioned for when your song comes in. And so were the other hundred Sylvester lovers! Larry would tease you for a very long time. Each Sample a bit longer. By the time you’ve abandoned e the idea he might play it… and I’m done he is never going to play the entire song…He isn’t going to play it. Boom - That Intro Horn Section would come on and go all the way through… Well it’s on like butter popcorn’s! 😁😆🥳 It’s on and everyone on the the floor is already crazy with anticipation. The key was to just pace yourself on the floor until your song came. He would run that for only 12 hot min. I would dance every second of it. This is what made you overjoyed. To dance at the garage was a mission, a journey- if you will. You go to get a good work out. Stress buster relief. And I guess a whole lot of what was clearly my head. 😂😂. He was so very talented.

The closest modern singer to him is Ceelo, tho it's challenging to tell if Ceelo is singing in full voice or Falsetto. I think it's interesting that it seemed like Aretha inspired Sylvester, then, later on, he inspired her in reverse to the point that she sounds like him on Freeway of Love which he and Martha Wash are singing background on.

This was such a very necessary episode. I was born just a few months after "Disco Died" in '79 and I'm embarrassed to say that, even though I've always been aware of Sylvester and that he had several hit "disco songs", it took me until just this very moment in 2022 to learn he was releasing music and performing well into the 1980s. Even in Queer spaces, I've never heard his career talked about. I've lived 43 years under the impression that he released a hit disco song in '78 and was a one hit wonder. To realize the way his career has gone unspoken and unheralded is heartbreaking! Thank you for educating!

I loved this video!!! I was living in San Francisco in 1981 and was walking out of my bank(Eureka Federal Savings) on Castro Street, and as I was opening the door to go in Sylvester walked out (dressed to the nines in a fur coat on a foggy day) and smiled a big beautiful smile softly saying "Thank you dear" with such grace to me, a skinny 21 year old who was completely struck by the bright light of a shinny star. I saw Patti LaBelle years later and she called him up on stage to sing a duet. I will always have those memories to cherish, thank you for stirring them up with your video.

johnneils :: I wanted to type something nice about this very decent and well-mannered man, and then I found your comment and decided this was the perfect place to hook up. I was in the Height-Ashbury district one early evening and suddenly, Sylvester came out of a night club with his two beautiful dogs. I recognized him of course and before I could continue on my insignificant way ... Sylvester took the time to smile and say "Hi". I didn't expect him to be that polite or acknowledging of someone passing him on the street. His painted mural is still on that wall on Folsom Street. What a decent human !

I have loved Sylvester since the first time I heard his song playing in 1977. THEN, I got to see him life in a local diso gay bar, and to this day, it was one of the best shows I've ever seen. He had a pure gospel voice, and very entertaining. I'll never forget hearing him, then the first time I saw him, for one skinny minute, a bit of confusion, lol . But who cared what he wore, who he loved, it was his flamboyance and originality that made me love him even more, on TOP of that beautiful falsetto voice. He was a musical Icon, and I'm so glad to see him being re discovered.

I heard it and saw him on TV, I realized there was more than society taught me and I was hooked. He was a role model for me in terms of being who you really are and not hiding. Sylvester was one of my heros when i was on the scene in the early 80s,, especially because he never had a political agenda or identified with a label ,, he simply and humbly stated, I am Sylvester! such a advanced way of thinking,, he did not wish to be defined or summed up by a label other than his name! Still love his way of thinking and of course his amazing voice.

This is fascinating, and extremely well researched and presented. Thank you for giving Sylvester a 20-minute profile, filling a longtime void for his friends and fans. If you want to do us any further online favors, please put on RU-vid any video footage from his San Francisco War Memorial show, or any live performance by him of the song "Stars," filmed anywhere!
