This is why all extra deck monsters need an errata to require at least one specific. Either one archetype, one attribute or type, or one specific monster named. Often in both their summoning conditions and effect. Generic-ish is fine but 100% generic is not. The new Magistus Zoroa is a perfect example of what ED monsters should be. It has a relatively powerful effect but specifically requires a spellcaster monster in it's synchro summoning and then further requires monsters of its archetype to make use of both it's powerful effects. Those being to lock your opponent out of effects and to reborn itself. It's kind of funny for the last effect in particular that it released in the same set as DPE and yet DPE does not have the same restrictions. Because who needs balance, right?
@@RunicSigils honestly the use of generic materials isn't that much of a problem for most ED monsters, so long as the effects are balanced around the ease of summoning, plus all ED monsters do have restrictions, Fusions often need the use of a spell card to fuse, Synchro need a Tuner, and XYZ need the levels to be the same. The problem is literally that Link Monsters don't need anything like that. One of the biggest ways to limit Link monsters would honestly be to not allow them to be summoned with Tokens. It also doesn't help that even Link's with specific cards (Needlefibre needs a Tuner) are given overpowering effects.
I remember in one of the GX Tag Force games there was a task where you have to win with the Yata-Garasu lock so after looking it up I built a deck around it with Neo Daedalus (CED was banned) and once I pulled it off the AI conceded immediately which I thought was cool because the AI never concedes.
I miss when Konami made good full yugioh games. Driving my duel runner was so much fun. Why isn’t there an insane next gen game with Action Duels from Arc V or Speed duels from VRAINS or all of the above. They could even make an open world ARPG just from the lore. I’m looking forward to master duels, but something akin to the OG games that made me feel in it and quenched my thirst would be nice. Sorry for the tanger, but hearing about Tag Force just reminded me of happier times.

@@Weareonenation303 As I actually played in chaos yata format way back in the day, I honestly REALLY never want this card off the banlist. There were people in my meta that used the basic chaos deck form and added drop off and other effects that denied you cards and that was with a much smaller card pool than you have today, with a pool so much larger than it was this becomes more actually doable than back then. The utter futility of the yata lock was so very VERY annoying that I still slow burn today.
The funniest thing about saying "prevent it from being used as Link Material" is that when Konami invents the next extra deck mechanic all those cards will instantly become broken and need to be banned again
That shows why unrestricted mechanics is not good for the overall game pace, but Konami still allows it. If the formats were like "tribute only, synchro only" etc, the cards wouldn't be banned at all. Banning them is to make it easy to counter for future card releases. That is just lazy on my opinion. You gotta take responsibility of your own game
The Link mechanic is the biggest mistake Konami has ever made, even more than the Pendulum mechanic. Cards that have been fine for ages suddenly cannot be played any more because anything and everything can be used to spam Link monsters. I just cannot believe they decided to create such an irresponsible mechanic
3:10 I think you're misreading dandylion's effect: it doesn't matter how it hits the GY for its effect to trigger, i.e. it does not need to hit the field first. Having dandylion in the hand makes for excellent discard fodder due to link shenanigans, which is much easier than a special summon imo.

@@warcriminalyes When was there a time that Raigeki was Limited but Dark Hole was banned? I have been in and out of the game at times but can't recall a time such a thing happened. Heavy Storm's issue is also the fact that you can use a floodgate or 2 to stop your opponent from making their plays and then when you're ready to make your own, you can just wipe out your own floodgates while also getting rid of your opponent's back row.

Do you know how limiting it is to card design when you disallow the designers to ban cards? Imagine being unable to make a fun mechanic just because one card made years ago before this idea was even conceived would absolutely break it and being unable to do anything about it. Fun is always more important than balance (especially as balance is there to serve the game being fun). It’s fine to ban cards when it’s for the sake of balance. It is important to not rely on such a thing because constantly banning cards isn’t fun either. Though yes, Konami definitely takes the utter piss out of banning cards at times and are probably the most infamous for it. Ironically, there’s a balance to this as well.
@@MrZer093 Future proofing isn't easy. No offense but this seems a lot like "the hard way to design something is hard" in a nutshell. The incredible frequency and lack of foresight in designs that are identified as problematic by the community in days shows me that Konami generally doesn't care. It's not that they care 0% but they definitely aren't worried about making mistakes especially when they have the ability to make a solution in the next set but that model feels abusive and is my number 1 reason for not getting into the game. For example, I can almost excuse the 1st wave of link bans that were preemptive but I can't excuse things like Halq. The problem that I have is that they've made similar mistakes so often that it stops feeling like a mistake and more like negligence or intentional problems

Funny how magical scientist only appeared 3 times in your top 10 s and Made it #1 in all of them. More infamous than spellbook, brilliant fusion, etc. Also, top 10 banned cards to be fixed with a hard once per turn
I always figured Konsmi would never take Yata off the ban list because if you were ever to Yata lock someone the game could take 40+ turns to end and in an event were games have time limits it would make the games take forever since they can't force someone to surrender a game just image how long a best of 3 would take.
In a modern game the Yata player could keep drawing cards and special summoning stuff in addition to Yata, though, so they'd probably end the match a lot quicker than that.

So, got an idea for a new list, that being "Top 10 non-Banned cards that could be errata to released cards from the Ban list." Cards like that Crystron link monster could be errata to require a WATER Machine Tuner for its Summon, and only Summon a WATER Machine Tuner from the Deck. That would limit it to the Deck it supposed to work with, and get a number of Tuners off the list.

Halq was clearly intended to work in every deck that needs 2+ Tuners to play, as we can see from its highly generic Summoning conditions and effect. I don’t get why people don’t like it. Halq’s existence enables many rogue decks to play the game, and it isn’t broken.
With regards to Yata, I'm going to echo something that was mentioned either in Progression or in History of Yugioh - Yata has stayed banned, not strictly because of its power level, but because it enables unfun game states and would be the subject of every little monster's new handlock deck. Whether that would actually be a problem in the competitive scene? There's only one way to find out...
Yata likely won't ever get a chance as long as any form of hand looping or hand breaking exists. You would probably literally need to ban every single card that discards a card from your opponents hand for Yata to be able to come back and not be a problem. It would still punish non-conservative play though and probably still be degenerate as even with every 'discard a card from your opponent's hand'-like effect gone, you'd literally just need to force your opponent to expend all their resources and then drop Yata on them and unless they can outlast the damage they take, they lose.

Don't believe either are that consistent though. The fact that it promotes such play is problematic.

I feel like they should solve a lot of issues by just making a ruling that any monster or token that cannot be tributed also cannot be used for link plays
There are so many obscure rulings already, we don’t need more. More than half of the monsters on the ban list could be fixed with a hard once per turn.
@@billybobjoe1335 I dont think link summoning being considered a form of tributing when like every card basically was designed like it already was considered tributing balance wise would really be some super unintuitive design here. even other forms of summoning like XYZ never allowed tokens to be used, so they could quite literally just say you cant use tokens for link summons and that solves most of the problem cards too, if you want to worry about consistent rulings between mechanics.
Another option I can think of is giving it a cost. Like the one they did with makyura. Kill te viability of repeating with a once per turn/duel AND a banishing after activating the effect
I miss Level Eater. I love the Labradorite Dragon Syncro deck and how it opened the door to some of the coolest Syncro monsters that most people would pass on like Underground Arachnid.
I'm so old I still remember the disbelief and buzz when the banned list came out for the first time. A whole lot of people were upset, having spent tons of money on Yata Garasu and Chaos Emperor Dragon back then. I remember the old beatdown with La Jinn, and I think I quit sometime in 2005, before I graduated high school.
Another fix for Level Eater, it could lock you out of link summons for the rest of the turn if you special summon it, that way you can still make Synchro climbs and otherwise. It just wouldn't let you do any links, the other fix in addition would be to prevent the monsters summoned using it as material to not be able to be used as link material. That or it could just lock you into Synchro summons for the rest of the turn if you activate its special summon effect.
Funny thing is that Yata would do jack shit in the modern game if it was legal. It's Konami fear mongering about potential abuse, same reason why Tribe was banned for so many years despite huge power creep.
Yata wasn't doing anything back then either. Yata is a finisher after you made tyour actual plays, and it will probably be able to pull that off forever. Unless the released a better way to lock the opponent out of their draw phase that i am not aware of.
Bonus: Level Eater had been banned in the OCG quite a long time before Link Monster came out. The reason is PSY-Framelord Omega and the degenerate DARK Synchro Deck that ended with a Shooting Quasar, a Crystal Wing and 3-4 handloops, or in the worst case scenario 3 Omega that slowly regen your resources. So it was banned in late 2016, with Omega Limited.
Yata is extremely bad, it should go to 3. Remember his effect only revolves if you manage to attack. The amount of resources that you need to do that is the same that you need to make a OTK, so instead of winning with Yata Lock, you just OTK. In the past to make an OTK was very difficult, but now there is a lot decks that can do that.
One should more ask themselves why it should get unbanned tho. Does it make certain decks better or make gameplay quality better? Not really, it just enables some stupid unhealthy gamestate that nobody would want to be in, even if it would never happen in modern yugioh. It's just one less card Konami has to worry about being abused when they print new cards. So it's completely fine on the banlist. No one would profit from it anyways.
I don’t know about three copies, but maybe one to test the water. If at three, it might be too easy to use Dark Hole then summon Yata-Garasu, but that the same time, it seems rare for someone to not have a negate effect on standby mode. I would not be surprised if Yata-Garasu would require your opponent to have a certain number of cards in the hand, not not activate that effect if you summon other monsters.
Link monsters changed a lot of things including breaking older otherwise terrible or balanced cards like Grinder Golem which wasn't created with Link monsters in mind.
Imagine the shenanigans you could do today with Magical Scientist and its banned friends. Make a Cherubini to search Dandylion then loop Norden and Dandylion for link fodder.
@@shinygiveaways1920 I'm not aware of a lot of testing around Magical Scientist in the eras after its ban, but it's only useful in really swing-y OTK situations. I can imagine it would find little use in the GX era because of it; just no real purpose for it at the time. I can only imagine it'd be lackluster in the synchro era, too. No real use for vomiting out a bunch of low-level fusion monsters that wouldn't be better served by more legitimate strategies. ...come to think of it, I'm actually not sure what Magical Scientist might've been intended for at the time. FTKs aren't it, and its summons are too low-level for it to be an emergency board-breaker to knock over beaters like a Blue-Eyes. They can't attack direct, so it's not a 'push for game' situation...

In the Synchro era he could still be used in the FTK but also can help in summoning very high level Synchros
@@totalwartimelapses6359 Yeah, you misread. I'm saying that reasonably speaking Magical Scientist is ONLY useful for OTKs. He only lived to see Catapult Turtle, but reasonably if it was instead Catapult Turtle that got banned for that, Scientist would've gone on to fit into others. I'm just not sure of anyone's really labbed him in the GX era; I only know of some scary combos in the Xyz era. I do think he reasonably could've been used to make some big Synchros in that era, but he would actually be limited by Tuners; at that time I actually believe he couldn't have made a Synchro solo (Sea Monster of Theseus released in 2017). Meaning that he couldn't be a one-card engine like he could with Catapult Turtle or Link/Xyz monsters; you could still use him, but he wouldn't be so top-of-his-class, he'd have competition.

I'm still kind of bitter about level eater. My go to deck was synchro focussed and, on a good day, i could abuse a level eater/ quillbolt hedgehog/ quickdraw combo to a good degree. Best part is, otherwise my deck (though admittedly not the best) outside of eater and wall of revealing light was never banned
Great summary on yata. There really is no positive reason to unban the card, either it doesn't see play or it goes back to being one of the worst ways to lose the game. Honestly its not the most powerful card of all time, but it might be the most degenerate.
yaya by itself is not that important. its not even that good of a card. the problem is that when the game hits a position where you can get a favorable game state for Yata, it becomes a strategy with no possible out.
Yata being so bad, that no deck would play it is an argument to take it off the banlist, tough. If the card is bad now, it has no reson to be on the banlist in the first place. And if it still would be too good they can still place it back on the banlist.
I think changing the text on substitoad so that it's quite literally just lone-fire for frogs would be a better way of balancing it. Make it so it has to tribute itself, but it's a soft once per turn instead of a hard once per turn. It's already not a Frog monster, so it can't summon another copy of itself. That alone limits it's potential if it has to tribute itself. But if you can find a way to summon multiple copies, then it becomes pretty powerful, but not broken.
Yeah, I put Dandylion in my plant deck just to try it out and its effect was insane to link into or synchro summon monsters. I can see why it’s banned. But nowadays you can run three evil thorns and achieve a similar effect. Summon Evil Thorn, tribute it to burn for 300, summon two more, make Aromaseraphy Jasmine with those two. And if you have Primula the Rikka Fairy and/or Rose girl in hand when you tribute the Evil Thorn that’s just even more free summons, not to mention that its burn effect puts you at more lp than your opponent on turn 1, which if you run some Aroma monsters gives you even more effects to play with. The downside to evil thorn is that you have to run 3 and if you have two in your opening hand or your opponent has an Ash Blossom ready to go then you’re out of luck on this strat.

I still think that at least 75% of Link-related problems and bans would have been avoided if Link 1 monsters weren't a thing. Those were just a stupid, stupid idea.
"Yata-Garasu can be unbanned" has been said for the past five years and dudes. Stop saying that it can. Yes, its a bad card. Yes, no-one would play it. That's exactly why it should stay banned. It was only EVER used in abusive corner-cases, and unbanning the card only reinvites that possibility.
There's just no compelling reason to unban it. It doesn't help anybody anyways and is just yet another thing they need to consider when making new cards.
Or in my opinion to fix level eater, it can either only be trivuted for a tribute summon, or used as a material for a synchro summon. Since, you know, it was designed with that in mind.

How many cards could be fixed with a once per turn? All of them. If I could propose one thing in the next master rules (6?) It would be that all cards, unless otherwise stated already, are treated as having a once per turn clause.
Personally, I am fine with Yata staying banned forever. Yata is not that good, but its historical significance is what makes it special in there. CED got absolutely butchered with the errata and I'd rather keep Yata as it is

I think Synchro Fusionist and Dark Synchro disagree with you on how broken Level Eater was before Links. These dumb decks used Level Eater to handloop the opponent for literally 6.
I remember back in the day having like 2 or 3 other duelists besides me who were actually running yata garasu and we did have quite a few duels where is it decided the game OR was way too late so the opponent ran out of cards before killing his opponent xD those sweet sweet times
so those players had absolutely zero ways to special summon in their deck? No monster reborn, premature burial, call of the haunted, chaos monster, maurauding captain, rock spirit, etcetcetc? stop lying.
Top 10 worst monsters without once per turn effects. Since that seems to be how you fix a card that's banned... Now find cards that don't have once per turns that just suck lol.
the one thing I would love to see is legitimately a version of the modern game even if it's in say a video game form where you could actually play with the old versions of cards. Not talking older formats but actually seeing what some of the combinations between older cards and newer cards would be.
You can play without a banlist on YGO Pro, and you can (with a lot of effort) make custom cards in that game - so you could restore cards to their original effects and play them there.

Do you mean like traditional format? It does exist, on that format banned cards are actually limited (you can't use pre errata cards as far as I know) They make official tournaments of traditional format, and best decks are pure zoo and orcust
@@marco4317 I remember when traditional format was actually created, (yeah been playing for that long) but no I'm talking about a format where you could see how some of the old versions of cards and how they might have interacted with new cards. For example Witch being a non once per turn effect that would still let you summon the card. Think how would that have impacted the modern game, would it still see play or not. Some of the more broken cards I agree might have been needed but having the ability to still play them in that unbroken form an official way would be fun even in a video game. I also have tried speed running legacy of the duelist link evolution and it's actually a little wired with a few cards that were changed just after the last update or just before the last update ao that some decks actually require different cards or play entirely different due to it. Heck just a little after that update whatever the creature is that lets you get to use multiple traps from your hand was changed so it could only use one yet it's still unchanged while others have been. Exodia is the fastest no banlist deck but if exchange of the Spirit was still its original version that one is 10x faster just due to abusing painful choice and other cards.
Yata is not alone in a deck even back then with a very inconsistent combo (ced) was a problem and not for that combo in particular, today's strategies and archtypes could make yata even more powerfull, some people who lacks imagination and only see a card as it is can't realize how broken and unfair yata really is.
I mean, Konami won't do anymore erratas because it is just easier and more worth to make new cards and keep selling. Why errata an old card so it is balanced which will cause people to play older cards instead of buying new product? It's all about that $$$

Idea for the Frog deck/archtype: Give all of the cards an erata to remove the 'Frog the Jam' restriction. I don't understand why they even added that restriction other than they desperately want to exclude a 700 attack, level 2, non-effect monster from the archtype.

So what I gather is that the issue isn't even the cards themselves but the progression of the meta of Yu-Gi-Oh that cause an issue that forces them to be banned. Seems like instead of banning cards, they should stop making new cards with crazy ass effects. Synchro, XYZ, Pendulum, Link, all these crazy ass summoning types and monsters with full on books worth of effects written on the card. I'll stay where I'm at classic Yu-Gi-Oh, because things are literally out of hand these days.
Let's be honest here, Yata-Garasu is on the banlist just because of legaacy or some bullshit. They'll never unban it because they need an effect monster from the old school yugioh to stay banned and be "an example for future card designs".
Throwing hard once per turns on everything is so boring lol. I think for dandylion, you could fix it by just saying ("Dandylion" cannot be special summoned the turn it is sent to the graveyard.") That way you can dodge any abuses of the card being special summoned and sent to the graveyard constantly. Although doing this would still make the card really strong if it was put at 3 copies.
3:27 it's hilarious to me that all 3 of those monsters are mentioned in the same sentence, and those happen to be the 3 monsters I used the exact same recording with text-to-speech to dub over the names in my "why these cards are banned in as few words as possible" shorts. I went in alphabetical order, so I actually did gofu first, the dubbed over it for dandylion, then dubbed over that for grinder golem. I thought it was funny, but sadly I don't think anyone really noticed.
Video idea: Top 10 archetypes that improved the game. Stuff like gishkis changing the way ritual cards are treated, harpie ladies running beta tests for archetypes as we know them today, etc. Maybe a better name would be Top 10 Most Impactful Archetypes.
I recently got back into Yu-Gi-Oh after being out of the game since 5Ds-era and was trying to build my old Synchro deck on Master Duel. I got really confused when I saw that Level Eater was banned, because although it had always been pretty strong, it was a bulk common which was nowhere near the power level of most banned, or even restricted or semi-restricted cards. I then proceeded to play my first game, got OTK-d by a Cyberse Link deck which brought out 4 monsters with between 2300 and 5700 attack on turn 1 because it kept resummoning cards that I didn't even have time to read. It was at that moment that I realised 1- why Level Eater would have broken the game, and 2- that I was not going to enjoy my experience on Master Duel. As a former player, I have a question for those who have been playing continually since GX or before: have Pendulum and Link monsters actually improved the game (IE: made it more fun) or have they just turned the game into a d***-measuring contest between who can pull off the most broken combo on turn 1?
I'm late to this party but I needed to get something off my chest. Back in the early 2010s I was a relatively new duelist after coming back to the game again from childhood. I had wondered if Yata would be broken if used at that time thanks to all the negation and stuff. Like, how would you even get it to your hand? However, luckily for me I had a friend who was quite adept at the game. He managed to use a combination of cards including Lavalval Chain to get essentially the same effect off. Yata CAN'T come back. Not like that anyway. Someone WILL find a way to make it broken. I got scarred all over again thanks to that ONE duel. I argue with all the spirit Support, it's actually easy enough to do it super easy nowadays anyway.
the issue of yata is no how you get it on the field, its how you can reach a gamestate where yata would be abusive. a legal yata means hand rip and banish decks have the potential ot reach a truly infinite loop
I think they don't want to reprint old cards with erratas and that is why they keep them in the ban list. But it could be fixed like in the rules itself. They could say all cards have a "once per turn" effect if not listed. That is my 2 cents

doubt it since the other elements of the old yata lock all got errata'd the birb hasnt bee nyet most likely because the effect is so dangerous that its near impossible to change without betraying the idea of the card. and for the the crowd going " it can be at 3 and wouldnt do sht" that's the point: the only point where the brib is useful is in an abusive deck, if they ever unban yata, they would ned ot take a hard look at the whole " handripping" strategy and modern spirit/lvl 2/wind support and likely have ot ban mos of the card that would lead to a modern yata lock(which would be even more unbreakable due ot all the new mechanics and the prevalence of negates and handtraps)
nobody likes a gloater, if you got an opinion just say so. as for the question... possibly not? some archtypes can actually access the birb but it doesnt serve their purpose ot specifically go for yata. the issue of a legal yata gararus isntthat its gonna break th game immediately, its that his existence limits future design space for cards: just because there isnt a new iteration of the lock today doesnt mean it will stay that way. @@kyle5372
Yata is one of those cards that need to stay banned even if it isn't good, because if there's ever a combination of new cards that make it good it'd be such a miserable meta that nobody would want to play the game
i think a better way to errata Level Eater would be to prevent it from being used as link matterial, since the card is pretty fine with synchros using it
Magical scientist does have a wider selection of monsters to choose from then instant fusion. If brought back at a hard once per turn it will still see play. It will also compliment instant fusion
the problem isntthe fact you cna use tokens, its fact generic link 1's exist. all link 1's should be archtype specific or have specific requirements, the gerirics links should only start at link 2+
18:00 There is a weaker version of “Magical Scientist” called “Ready Fusion”.”Ready Fusion” is a spell card thats have same effects as “Magical Scientist” but it can only Special Summon 1 Level 6 or lower non-Effect Fusion Monster from your Extra Deck.Secondly that Fusion Monster whom Special Summoned by its effect can’t attack and it will be destroyed during your End Phase and finally this card has a hard once per turn.
