Hi Whatifalthist. I generally agree with your videos but I have heard rebuttals about the wage productivity gap (ie from actual justice warrior or the FEE, Yaron Brook and the whatnots). Not saying its on point but some say that the wage line only accounts for non-supervisory positions which the productivity doesn't. Also, the line regarding generational ownership is about percentages of wealth in the country rather than actual median incomes And of course boomers get more wealth as they are older and more in population compared to the smaller millennials and zoomers. I am not discounting the increase cost of living and housing in some areas and the jobs going overseas, but I believe those charts exaggerate the issue. And even if we take the graphs at face value, it's clear that a phone now is much better than a phone in 1971 or even 2001. So I believe the issue of stagnant incomes and wage productivity gap is exaggerate. Alec Stapp also had a very good chart that shows that millennials and boomers in terms of average incomes are not that different when they were at their age level. However there's more inequality now than when boomers were the age of millennials so i think that adds to some of the stress on the lower echelons of society. I'm not a libertarian so I do not agree with all of their talking points but on that issue, I believe they have a point and the populists on the right and the progressives on the left are wrong or at least exaggerate that issue.

I'll always remember how back in college, visiting international professors and students from the UK and Europe would always talk about how they felt so free in the United States. A visiting Spanish professor talked how great it felt that nobody in the US could identify her Andalusian (Southern Spain) accent, and therefor couldn't assess her regional or economic class. A student from the UK said the same thing- that nobody in the States could tell if she was from Liverpool, or Manchester, or Oxford. We couldn't tell if she was "posh" or a "chav"- she was just BRITISH! Thats when I realized that the "American Dream" is just the opportunity from foreigners to re-invent themselves.
@tpsam

So Americans later got jealous of that and wanted to re invent everything about themselves like the people visiting forgetting that it would basically mean downgrading Americans to immigrants

As an Iraqi-American, whenever I speak to foreigners outside of the US, their very first comment is usually about how the US lacks a deep-rooted culture or heritage, and that this land is filled with racists and obese maniacs. While this may be true, I challenge anyone to name five famous Chinese, English, or Spanish figures from the past ten years. The truth is that the US is currently shaping its own civilization through art, music, theater, technological advancement, current events, and more. I was homeschooled and raised in a healthy Christian environment in the middle of blue, yankee New Jersey. My parents formed a community with other families who valued curiosity, creativity, self-discipline, and genuine relationships between all generations. My mom taught my high school biology class to me and 8 of my friends. Another mom taught Western Civ via roundtable debates on every important conflict, and I still refer to those conversations. Even in college, I’m still part of this community because it forms high-quality individuals and families in an area generally devoid. It’s like an underground economy, flourishing with diversity of opinions yet unity in our goal, and we all look out for one another. We weren’t “sheltered” from the big bad world, but rather trained to go out into the world and engage thoughtfully with it, going deeper than chasing mere materialism and clout. I grew up in the area of England that spawned the Middle-American Quaker culture and I can subjectively confirm that outside of the central urban areas, the culture is still very provincial and inward-looking. After the emigration from this area to America, this area hosted large centres of industry. Additionally, waves of migration from Ireland, Wales and Scotland. Then de-industrialisation occured and the effects of this are still apparent today in this region with the some of the worst deprivation rates in England combined with strong sense of local identity between the towns and cities and even suburbs within the cities. It wouldn't be inconceivable that an average individual living in destitution in a cramped, dilpidated house in inner-suburban Manchester (a large city in this Quaker-spawning region with some awful inner-suburbs) has an American 10th cousin who owns a large farm in rural middle America.

Most of my Scot’s ancestors were near slaves to middle income tradespeople and landed rich from 1600s until late 1800a when poor people were mandated eligible for education. Despite the educational laws, villages could go years without a teacher because the laird wouldn’t fill a post when a school teacher left because the richest landed peeps were responsible to pay the schoolmaster. They were paid poorly of course which is why they moved on. Government intervention nudged more and more reforms closer to 1900. Life became decent once UK adopted a social welfare system. Where in fact pilgrims left their own diaries telling the story of real thanksgiving when they established this holiday to celebrate the massacre of native women and children they called savages. They came to this land to murder and rob and enslave people. They were digging out native peoples graves to get food left with the dead according to local traditions. Henry Louis Gates did a PBS documentary on the Caribbean in the 1990s. In one chapter, he focused on Haiti/Dominican Republic and how two countries sharing the same island could be so different. One colonized by France, bringing slaves from Africa. The other colonized by Spain and bringing slaves from Africa too. But in Haiti (northwest), the main crop that was grown was sugar cane- a very difficult, back-breaking crop to grow. You have to use absolute force to get people to work in sugar cane fields. However, in Dominican Republic (southeast) the land could not grow sugar cane. Its more "ranch and cattle" country. Herding cattle is dangerous work, and both slaveowners and slaves have to ride horses and carry guns. Eventually, a culture of "partnership" developed between the White Spaniards and Africans- to the point where a new identity developed among Dominicans. Haitians saw they had to revolt to gain freedom, while Dominicans saw NO NEED TO REVOLT at all!! In fact, when the Haitian uprising beat Napoleon's army, massacring and running the French off of the island, they continued on to kick out the Spanish. It was the Dominicans who asked the Spanish to come back. Dominicans welcomed back their colonizers rather than work with the Haitians. The Dominican Republic is the only South American country that doesn't celebrate independence from Spain, they celebrate independence from Haiti.

The United States is often compared to Rome and for good reason, but there are some major differences that make comparison less helpful as an outline for the countries future. Rome had a culture that became more sophisticated and successful and allowed them to impose their will and culture on the Western world, but they did this because their success created demand for a lifestyle that could not be met by the resources in their homeland. Therefore, just as happened to empires before and since, expansion was an imperative more than an just abstract lust for power. The US could retrench and isolate itself for hundreds of years and be fine. The world needs American hegemony and empire more than the Americans do. Further, empire usually solves the problem it creates, like how the mafia comes into your business and tells you they will keep you safe for a generous donation, even though you didn’t have any previous problems. The United States empire formed out of a legitimate problem where Europe could not avoid regular war that had become continental. The current empire prevents major war in the multipolar regions of the Middle East, Europe, South East Asia and Latin America. The elites in these regions complain to their populace about America hegemony, but behind closed doors they know their ability to spend little on their militaries is a direct result of American power projection. As a side note, as many regions look to China as the “peace partner” to replace the U.S., they will find out the hard way that the Chinese will never sacrifice their blood and treasure in a far land without a mafia boss like relationship afterward.

I'd say that the ultimate key is that the US of the mid-20th Century had an unshakeable faith in the idea that mutual cooperation is both mutually beneficial and the right thing to do. There's definitely a sense in which Americans love seeing their money feed the hungry, educate the ignorant, and free the oppressed. It's that "almost-chosen nation" thing -- we really do want to see ourselves as an instrument God uses for good in the world (even if our historical ignorance sometimes results in naive attempts to act in that regard which do much more harm than good). But there's also a sense in which Americans don't actually see a difference in the long run between the right thing to do and the thing that's going to bring about the best long term consequences. It's hard to separate the two impulses when considering the sort of world America's assistance brought about. Turning western Europe and Japan into valuable economic and military partners, reducing the barriers to economic development, multiplying the cost of war to the point where it became all but unthinkable -- all those things were in the interest of America and its people, but they were also in the interest of both western Europe/Japan as nations and the humanitarian interest of the people of those nations.

Probably the best video I've seen in over a year... you've pulled together a bunch of themes, including: #1 Theodore Plucknett (Concise History of the Common Law (1927): in American constitutionalism "the cause of medievalism is fighting hard against the irresponsible Machiavellian state." #2 Alexis de Tocqueville: (a) Although the desire of acquiring the good things of this world is the prevailing passion of the American people, certain momentary outbreaks occur, when their souls seem suddenly to burst the bonds of matter by which they are restrained ... Religious insanity is very common in the United States. (b)Aristocracy had made a chain of all the members of the community, from the peasant to the king: democracy breaks that chain, and severs every link of it. ... Thus not only does democracy make every man forget his ancestors, but it hides his descendants, and separates his contemporaries from him; it throws him back forever upon himself alone, and threatens in the end to confine him entirely within the solitude of his own heart. (C) I think that in no country in the civilized world is less attention paid to philosophy than in the United States. The Americans have no philosophical school of their own; and they care but little for all the schools into which Europe is divided, the very names of which are scarcely known to them. ... As to the influence which the intelligence of one man has on that of another, it must necessarily be very limited in a country where the citizens, placed on the footing of a general similitude ... hey are constantly brought back to their own reason as the most obvious and proximate source of truth. ... Everyone shuts himself up in his own breast, and affects from that point to judge the world. #3 Talleyrand "The American woodsman is interested in nothing.He plants nothing. He awaits the results of nothing. He has no memories... His only thought is for the number of axe strokes required to cut down a tree. Destruction is what keeps him alive. Destruction is everywhere, hence, every place suits him." (Mémoire Sur les Relations Commerciales des Etats Unis avec l'Angleterre (1796) #4 My Mom (Old New York Irish): "American Catholics became Protestant, in the effort to assimilate." These and like observations have been floating around for a while... but you've woven them into a fascinating migratory ethno-cultural thesis. Great work, IMO

As a Southerner, you learn to listen for the (to me) wide variations in "Southern" accents. I live in the western foothills of my state. Charlotte, NC is only 50 miles southeast of my home. Native Charlotteans use words like "idear" but we say "idea". The further east one goes in NC and SC, the bigger the difference in Southern accents. This is just as you posit in your wonderful video. In central and eastern NC and SC, the Southern accent is softer, less nasal. As you would say, the "Cavalier" settled parts of both NC and SC. Politically, in past decades and the 19th century, the western and mountain areas of NC were small farmers. For example, slavery in my western county in NC wasn't common. Yet in the next county to my county, to the southeast, slavery was more common. Consequently, in my county and west, the support for the CSA was mediocre among the majority of white men. I have family further west and in the NC mountains who refused to serve in the CSA Army after the 1862 Conscription Act. Some did serve once Conscription was passed. However, the ones who were serving in the CSA Army deserted in late 1864 or early 1865. Regarding religion, I never even met a Catholic until I was perhaps 9 years old. The first Jew I met at 12 or 13 years old. How times have changed! All of the idiosyncrasies of my youth either have disappeared or will soon be gone. Thats when I realized that the "American Dream" is just the opportunity for foreigners to re-invent themselves.

His facts are interesting, but his opinions on what to do about these facts seem to contradict his self described political identity. Whenever I hear someone use the word woke unironically , I immediately knock that persons credibility model down a notch or two. He mentioned in another video that he didn’t go to college, which , if you’re wise enough, can be spotted when he talks about all these historical flash points that were right wing caused problems, and then blames them on the left ? The last president we had that was decidedly left wing was like FDR. I’ve lived under right wing economic policies 38 years as of tomorrow , and the graph that shows the problems that he cites stemmed from the switch from a lefter perspective to a right wing perspective. I get way too much of a “smartest guy in the room” vibe from this dude,I’m not even political but this guys whole aura and the subtle jabs at everyone who may think differently, leads me to believe that there is likely tons of misinformation in his videos. @@bonesy7190 This guy is pulling shit out of thin air. To say that we haven't had "true left" presidents since FDR is laughable. Especially when we just had Obama who got through quite literally the biggest reform to healthcare (notably massively increasing its public industry) in the country's entire history all the while 70% of the political front was raking him tooth and nail for revisions for every last drop of blood they could get. Or his social pushes such as, you know, legalizing same sex marriage. This guy is the type of guy to call anything short of his fetishized autosophistry of the Scandinavian countries "not actually left." Utterly out of social sync in terms of beliefs. As well, people that claim that anyone who uses "woke" is biased, uninformed, bad faith, whatever, is being absurd themselves. The fact of the matter is that wherever you are on the US political spectrum, there has been a true, impactful, and noticeable change in terms of socioeconomic beliefs held in the US since roughly 2012, peaking in 2016-18, and existing strong today. Whether we want to call it "wokeism" or "communist lunacy" or "the morally right thing to do" is irrelevant. Hell, at this point even people who are woke unironically call themselves woke. Of the things that can be disagreed with WIAH on, this really is the silliest one. As for his last paragraph, frankly, kind of true, but also as he self admits he's not into politics and I'm going to keep it real here and make it known that in actual polisci classes (or even philosophy classes), this is how the instructor will sound. Somewhat condescending, somewhat know-it-all, somewhat insane. That's just par for the course. 16:22 I think there’s one exception in Europe, that is Switzerland. Switzerland started off as a confederation of different Alpine republics with a “central” government only being established in 1848. Swiss laws are still being voted on by the people, not just some representatives sitting in a big building. The cantons have very high autonomy from the central government. It was the place where Huguenots, a religiously fanatical Calvinist group found refuge from the persecution in France, which created a highly capitalist culture with a very strong work ethic. And that made Switzerland the richest country in Europe, and one of the richest countries in the world.

I was skeptically checking out this video, but man you did a good job! It's frank, but I think that's a good thing because Americans generally have a hard time grasping their own narratives.

Kind of sus that you state Australia doesn't have a frontier culture. The Australian outback is probably one of their most discernable cultural products (kangaroos, boomerangs, ranchers, cowboys & crocodiles and all that jazz). I don't know, a lot of the points around American culture here seemed somewhat inflated to push a narrative of American exceptionalism. It is an exceptional country, but given that you can drop anyone from a North Sea cultural background into the US and presuming they know English will have no problem culturally blending highlights that its not really a world in itself like say China.

Born, raised,and live in Appalachia, and I really have near to nothing in common with the rest of the county. I go north and they think im a southerner but if i go south they think im a Yankee. I am neither and only have anything in common with my fellow mountain folk. The best way to describe this is a quote from a documentary about the region that goes, "we were so poor we didn't know we were poor till the government told us we were.".

we have been drilled on how poor, ignorant, and racist we are since I was a child. If you need to say something derogatory about a section of the country take your pick Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and no one will contradict your words

I do not think that it is fair to say America has never had to deal with famine. The dust bowl was a multi-year famine that impacted American culture quite a bit.

I think it's important to differentiate between "widespread crop failure that caused serious economic dislocation" and famine as it was experienced historically. The Dust Bowl was miserable, certainly. But I don't remember Steinbeck writing about mothers being so famished that they ate their children the way historical famines are described. It's kind of like how the US has had to deal with war, but it lost less men in all its wars combined than were lost in the single battle of Stalingrad. We've been very fortunate in our ability to avoid the worst of the horrors the world tends to throw at humanity.

It was, but it was also fairly localized, affecting the great plains, a frontier zone not being the powerhouse of US food (it's one part in a larger zone which makes the breadbasket), and thus not the whole culture. It's also notable in basically being the only famine the US has ever known.
