The theory of Rainer Landfermann being Nattramn is so bizzarre. They sound nothing alike, at the very most Nattramn could be described as Rainer if he became a whining dinosaur
I honestly never read about this theory, but i read about Silencer actually been a project made by the members of the Bethlehem, you can actually listen a lot of resemblance in the sound, expecially in the clean/slower parts, like in the song "Sterile Nails And Thunderbowels", is totally something Bethlehem would compose.
I love all of Bethlehem's earlier albums, but especially Dictius te Necare has been one of my all-time favourite albums for years. Rainer Landfermann pulls off the most insane vocals that sound actually disturbing, unlike lots of DSBM bands that try to copy them. The ending to Aphel, die Schwarze Schlange is probably my favourite moment.
„Aphel, die Schwartze Slange“ Wtf. If this is your favourite Bethlehem moment then write the song title correct. It's not that hard to do that, even if this is not your native language - You're in the fuсking internet... Give some respect when you speak about that thing...
I'm a huge listener of Bethlehem and a huge Jurgen's fan. He has inspired me to write my lyrics thanks to his music composition and his poems, making him a man of worship and worthy of thanks for his dark and abstract themes.
The first three albums are some of my all-time favorites in extreme metal as a whole, especially Dark Metal and SUIZID. I’m glad they went back to their roots with Onielar.
Gummo is probably the film with the most extreme metal soundtrack. That's where I also found about Bethlehem as I remember. The song played on the ending credits is actually "Schuld Uns'res Knöch'rigen Faltpferd's" which was featured exclusively in the film. "Verschleierte Irreligiosität" is played briefly during one of the scenes in the movie, specifically the outro section of the song.
To this day, I'm not sure how much of Harmony Korine's eccentric behavior was genuine and how much was for shock value...Meryl Streep's purse? Really?!!... brilliant writer and director, though...
Cool talking Bethlehem with Tears for fears in the background. Darkened nocturn slaughtercult is a favorite here. Love that she's contributed to Bethlehem.
Awesome!! I never hear anyone talking about this band. Insanely overlooked band. I’d suggest them for anyone into the more bizarre but not quite avante garde “black” metal. Thanks for covering them
Gotta say Wyatt, i love your passion for the genre of metal. You listen to every form of it that exists and you give everything a fair shake, albiet you (as we all do) have biases. But you show a true love for metal. Thanks for the entertainment and education
Congratulations for your extensive approach! I liked Bethlehem right from the start and I agree with... approx 95% of everything you said about them: their musical style, the atmosphere they create, their shift in sound throughout the years, etc. Well done, man!
Ayy finally, they've been my favorite band recently, love their first and third phases, first trilogy is a masterpiece and the works with Onielar are also superb, still need to check the albums with Guido
I personally prefer Dark Metal (one of my top 10 all time albums), but I totally get people liking Dictius te Necare more. Rainer's performance on that is pretty much legendary. Feels like the deranged side of black metal is still chasing that sound and he remains on top. As weird as it is that it exists in the first place, that "My Way" cover is amazing.
First heard them in 94 with their debut - i really liked it , and then the second album came out with those insane vocals - loved it . I bought the third album and ep but then they got too weird so i left there, but came back to them on their lastest 2 albums
Oh, and the (kind of vague) label of "Dark Metal" was actually pretty popular in Germany during the early 1990s. There's quite a few bands that come to mind, the most popular (and notorious) probably being Eisregen.
Finally got a ticket for Prophecy Fest after searching for it for 3 Months because its sold out. If everything goes right i will see Bethlehem in a Cave 🤘
It took me so many years to understand why I always liked this band so much, that it's one of the very few non French black/avanguard metal band (together with Dodheimsgard) being able of keeping up my interest since now. Weirdly my favourite song by them it's Ein Kettenwolf greint 13:11-18
Hell yeah! Bethlehem seem to be very underrated and I am glad someone is finally talking about them now. Their albums are excellent soundtrack when reading works by people like Cioran, Schopenhauer, or Mainlander (the latter is actually referenced by the title of Dictius Te Necare which is a quote from on the guy’s books iirc)
Nice video but some missing things should be said as well. Bethlehem lost their dark metal face when the guitarist Klaus Matton left the band. Jürgen Bartsch might be the soul of the bands but is not able to compose such riffs and melodies Klaus did. Marco Kehren, one of the two vocalists of "S.U.i.Z.i.D", has his own band called Deinonychus which is musicaly and personally close related to Bethlehem. The other vocalist of the Bethlehem's third album is Cathrin Campen and most of the time you can clearly hear the difference between the two. She is not only talking some parts, she is also doing brutal female vocals for example in the track "Teufelverrückt Gottdreizehn".
I really like your videos, I love watching ching weird explaining extreme bands, specially the charts are really good, I would recommend doing those more.
Thanks a lot for this video! I've had the pleasure to hang out a little with Jürgen Bartsch and Marco Kehren at a Genocide Organ show in Mannheim, around 2010 or so. Both are very friendly and enjoyable people to be around. I believe Dada is an element in Bethlehem's work as well, or at least has been. And, lest we forget: »Dick-teeous teh neck-ahray.« »Ry-nerrr Lunt-fair-munn.« »Uh-lass tott (as in »thot« ^^).« »Fur-shly-err-tay Eer-relic-iositat.« »Sahr-doh-niche-err Oon-terr-gung ehm Psychen eer-relic-iosir Dohr-bee-toong.« »Shut-toon ouse durr Alexander Weld.« »Eck-suh cozy-oi eck-say cont-uh eck-suh phobia.« (there's no actual letter H in the ancient Greek alphabet, instead there's a sign called »Spiritus asper« attached to a vowel that indicates to »breathe harder.«) »Lebe dich leer« was fine. ;-)
I read somewhere that Rainer could never perform live and in the studio he could only sing 2,5 songs until he lost his voice which might explain why he wasn't in the band that long
Definetly oof my very favorite bands. Something that always was consistent with this Band are the lyrics which are very cryptic and dark. These give even the Schatten aus der Alexanderwelt trilogy a dark twisted atmosphere. I usually don't care for lyrics but those are definetly a great bonus. I like that every album is more or less unique.
@@natalie-kj4om I think it's about loss/grief. By the translated title, diary of a stillborn, and some parts of the lyrics, i think it's the foetus perspective knowing it's not going to live. I'm sure it's hard to interpret, considering how confusing the lyrics may seem, but that makes sense to me. I wasn't aware of that story tbh, maybe it's closer to what they were trying to convey through the lyrics.
I'm not aware of any banned DTN versions. I know the band was banned from playing in Germany in some locations at the time, but what do you mean the banned cd?
If not for one I do Liked This band and that is Their unique for their Black Metal kind of Style and they were the Pioneers of DSBM like don't get me wrong, they pave for more German DSBM bands to come in the time as it were the talk of the time🤘😉🤔.
There is more links and similatiries between Silencer and Bethlehem: Steve Wolz who was the drummer in 'Death Pierce Me' was also, the drummer of Bethlehem. Bethlehem's guitarist did the cover art for Death Pierce Me. I read online in some forums, which is not hard to find, that Silencer was a Jürgen Bartsch's project, he never confirmed it, but you can definitely hear some some resemblance, specially in the clean/slower parts in "Death Pierce Me" and "Sterile Nails And Thunderbowels" is totally what Bethlehem sounds like. I don't believe nattramn actually existis, is all a marketing play by the guys from Bethlehem appealing to shock value.
With one album and one EP it'll be a quick explanation.... "Polish crust/stenchcore/death metal band with later Morne member. They took their name from a MISERY (US) song title. They played really heavy, dark death metal-esqure crust with keyboards and dark, political lyrics. Then they broke up."
I truly appreciate your explaining this excellent group. I showcased "Dark Metal" on my channel but didn't do it justice in my explanation as you have just done. Check it out! I'd like your opinion. Bravo, my good metal man! I too love Tears For Fears😅! Their newest record is a masterpiece. Cheers!
Bethlehem's first album definitely had some Satanism themes. Just sayin' ;) Clearly one of my favorite bands of all time, as I put out three of their albums on the SWR label over the years. But yes, good video and explanation!
i wonder when english-mothertonguees realize, that nearly everyone worldwide pronounces vowels different than them. modern english butchered the tonal values and every single one of them doesnt sound like it should (or did - in earlier times). in other words: you feared to butcher the german album-title and got around the cliff by not saying it...dictius te necare didnt have that much luck :)
"I don't want to pronounce it because it will be a trainwreck and a half" - Americans need to stop doing this, nobody else does this, and it's not because their pronunciation is perfect in all languages. If you're really THAT insecure you can just listen to google translate pronounce it
Across multiple videos you have added a ‘K’ to the word ‘especially’. It’s not pronounced ekspecially, but if this is like a meme or something then ignore this comment - but I heard it once in another of your videos and again in this one
Satanism is a ""cliche"" ? Dude, seriously? It is a philosophy of life that you,me and millions of other people follow during their everyday routine without even realizing it. It is closer to real life than anything else ever created by the human mind.Besides,Yvonne /Onielar/ represents this kind of philosophy more accurately than any other artist,so...Maybe you just do not fully comprehend Satanism, have you ever thought about that?
@@wyattxhim Why? I thought your channel was supposed to be a thought-provoking channel for people who think about music, art and other subjects seriously.I can always watch ""Barbie"" if I need to chill out.But not your channel.
I wondered if you had ever heard of the obscure, neoclassical darkwave project Sopor Aeternus To me it's the most impressive solo work I had ever stumbled upon. It's in no way related to metal, but just too underrated, even within the goth scene
They have said themselves they are Dark metal because Black metal is Satanic, and they are not. Sucks they dropped off of Prophecy Fest, hope they are okay and its not Oneiar sick again. I love their experimental era, lasted over a decade and they did some great albums, Alexander Welt in particular is well worth a listen IMO but I tend to enjoy experimental music. The vocalist on Suizid went on to form Deinonychus, one of my favorites and i can't recommend them enough, especially the newest album Ode to Acts of Murder... which I have mentioned a number of times commenting on your videos. Jurgen did a industrial/black metal side project called Stahlmantel with Nihilist from In Memorium/Thy Infernal/currently Plague Bearer, also worth checking out. Jurgen's childhood was really fucked up, its no wonder the music is so dark.
