InclinedLift at Riva Del Garda fortress (“Bastione”)
Climbing up a hill or visiting an archaeological site gets easier and safer thanks to Maspero Elevatori’s panoramic inclinators and APM systems.
The ancient Venetian bastion lays strategically at the foot of mount Rocchetta, so as to defend the ancient walled town and its lake. In order to connect the fortress with Riva del Garda center. Maspero Elevatori manufactured and installed a full glass panoramic inclinator, which, besides perfectly harmonizing with the surrounding area, allows its passengers enjoy the unique landscape of Garda Lake.
Built in 1507, the Bastion was fully restored by the Autonomous Province of Trento between 2007 and 2008; it is a great example of fortified Renaissance typical architecture.
Until 1980 a chairlift was ensuring the transport of the tourist uphill.
The Design phase started in 2016. Three years after the construction started with the cooperation between Maspero Elevatori Spa and Impresa Costruzioni Bassosarca. The first ride with public users took officially during early summer of 2020.
The inclined elevator has transparent laminated glasses on all of its walls; it has been designed by the Associated Engineers Fontana & Lotti-Lorenzi.
Its inclination swings from 37° to 43° and its cabin stands a nominal capacity of 1875 Kg / 21 passengers. The 208m track has two stops and can be covered in about 2 minutes thank to a speed less than 2 m/s.

The yearly flow reaches 150.000 tickets with an average of 400/500 passengers per day.
Description of the project
The project involves the construction of a fully automatic inclined panoramic lift for public use, connecting the historic center of Riva del
Il The intervention involves moving the original route to the north, on the ridge of the slope on the slopes of the Rocchetta, directly under the Bastion.
The Venetian Bastion is the element that characterizes the context of the intervention.
The fortified complex of the Bastion derives its name from the robust sixteenth-century military tower with a circular plan in white limestone, but it was actually much more complex than what it appears today, as shown in the “traveled postcard” of 1899.
To minimize the landscape impact of the new infrastructure, an attempt was made to adapt the positioning of the runways to the existing profile, keeping the sliding base of the lift as close to the ground as possible.
For the access of visitors to the valley, the stairways and stone walls of the Maronian era remain. The station will be built through a reorganization of the existing volumes in a single building with an underground typology, placed on new grounds respecting the alignment of the original terraces.
A modern building hosts the lower station, which is “indoor” and endowed with technological devices that regulate/control the passengers flow.
Before the intervention the Bastion can only be reached through a pedestrian path with travel times of about 30 minutes, while the new alternative mobility proposal guarantees accessibility in about two minutes of travel, with a panoramic view of the lake important for the tourist accommodation context. of the municipality of Riva del Garda and the whole community.
Great attention was given to the mountain station, given the presence of the fortified complex of the Venetian Bastion which dominates, with its own grandeur, the view over the city of Riva.
A restaurant has been recently opened at “La Terrazza” ( g.page/bastione?share).
