His accent is MLE, multicultural London English, it’s a working class accent that has emerged mostly from cockney in areas with a large proportion of ethnic minorities. For anyone who doesn’t know RP, his initial accent wasn’t that, and his second accent wasn’t cockney. I’m not sure what “roadman” is.

My accent is also a combination of all three. I try to use RP at work but always end up reverting to my true accent, which is a combination of Cockney and MLE. My parents had the Cockney accent and I was surrounded by MLE throughout school, so that is how that happened I guess. People always know I'm from London though.

RP is not speaking white. RP is neutral language that anybody in business can understand, which is the point of communicating. In the business world you will be speaking with native and non-native english speakers and makes it the most efficient. This sort of very basic logic eludes many that want to infer race into that type of speaking.

A "roadman" in Liverpool will have an entirely different accent to a roadman in London.All our accents are a combination of many. As is the American accent the USA is made ip of people descended from immigrants from all over the world. The first British settlers were from the West County which is quite similar to today's American accent.zMix that with Scottish Irish Italian German, Spanish, Yiddish African Chinese and many more 😅

I'm 63 and white so MLE has never been my accent. I do like the fact that new accents are fluid and change but also have a nostalgic feeling when I come across people who've kept a cockney accent. I describe my accent range between estuary and posh depending on who I'm with. I don't see that as devious, just making others comfortable. I feel like these accents present different parts of me even though I'm still poor!

I think most British people think the same about Americans and vice versa of course. I think as countries have become more interconnected we have seen a greater number of people speaking fusion accents such as yourself. Which is where a lot of the confusion comes from as its harder to tell where one accents starts and ends as they are all becoming closer in terms of how they sound. Not to mention it is for all intents and purposes impossible to define how many accents both America and the UK have with estimates ranging from as low as 3 to as high as over 100 regional accents in the US. Similar to the UK most Americans would group the majority of the accents heard in the UK as being in only a couple of groups being scottish, posh, london, and “peaky blinders”. Very similar to how most people from the UK know of American accents as being either general american, southern, northern, or “valley girl”. When there are innumerable variations within each major group just like the UK! As an example take the state of North Carolina which is widely regarded as potentially the most linguistically diverse state in the US. There is the Pamlico sound accent in the outerbanks of NC that funnily enough sounds like an Cockney accent, which can be seen by the name the speakers have given themselves, “Hoi Toiders”. Then you have the Appalachia accent of western NC, the general American accent of the cities, white southern accent, black southern accent, and the Lumbee accent. Sadly as time marches on the unique sounds and phrases of regional US accents are fading and slowly morphing together. Here is to hoping both the US and UK can keep the interesting and rich cultural history of our varied accents alive and spread more knowledge like you did in this video!

@KT-no8ll
@KT-no8ll 5 месяцев назад
No, it’s an accent used by the elite, often public school educated (which, to confuse matters, means you have to pay privately for school), it’s not regional. Think queen’s english. His example was nowhere close to RP
@m0tm0t2
@m0tm0t2 4 месяца назад
Yeah RP is essentially non-existent now and is not really a ‘London’ thing. It was modelled off upper-class speakers from London, sure, but it’s not at all reflective of the wider speech community in London. Even the Queen’s English, for example, does not count as RP. Royal English has some slight changes that makes it sound even more formal than RP. Also RP is an out of date term. General British, or GB, is the preferred term.
