During crisis, the "Don't change horses in midstream" theme can be pretty powerful. I think all bets are off of conventional theories for 2020 due to Coronavirus. Not only for what's on the voters' minds, but the pure logistics of holding the election itself.
@krombopulos_michael
@krombopulos_michael 4 года назад
Normally it is, but Trump's approval ratings of how he's handled the virus are dropping, and polls asking voters who they think would handle it better favour Biden greatly. I think the conventional wisdom of not changing in the middle of something works a lot better if the person currently in charge is perceived to be steady and predicable. Trump is generally seen as a much more chaotic figure than almost anyone else in politics.

One thing I'm going to push back on is the point about Americans being "moderates". Though most Americans would self identify as "moderates," this has very little to do with what policies they support or what politicians they vote for. Whether an American self identifies as a "moderate, liberal, or conservative" will not necessarily give you a clear picture of their ideology because Americans absolutely suck with political labels.
@OHYS
@OHYS 4 года назад
Couldn't agree more
@OrigamiMaster06
@OrigamiMaster06 3 года назад
I actually disagree. I think that the vast majority of Americans are moderates. I think the reason why this theory is the best one is that if you have two candidates that are radical, then all the moderate left will vote left because they hate the other (radical) right more and vise versa. If you have a radical right candidate (Trump) and a moderate left candidate (Biden) then, the moderate right may switch sides because they hate the radical right more than the moderate left.
@jpg99999
@jpg99999 3 года назад
@@OrigamiMaster06 That was the case for a time. From the late 80's to the early 2000's, basically the Reagan/Clinton era, that would certainly describe peoples' general voting patterns, but times have changed. If you look at American's positions on the actual issues, they don't necessarily line up with the picture of how they would label themselves, and how the general political consensus in the US defines "moderate."
@OrigamiMaster06
@OrigamiMaster06 3 года назад
@@jpg99999 I think I may disagree there. I personally believe that the moderates have remained unchanged for the most part on their political outlook. In my opinion, the thing that's changed has been the extreme right and left. They've begun a campaign of political beliefs that don't really align with what their party is supposed to be about but more about their dogmatic views on right and wrong.

From what I've read, only the richest people in US saved significant money with the tax cuts, for most it was negligible to the point they thought they had actually lost more money because they got less reimbursed from IRS, this was of course not necessarily true but goes to show how unlikely is for a Trump hater to tout his tax reform as positive unless s/he happen to be wealthy. The trade deal was great? It's almost identical as the previous NAFTA agreement (I assume that's the one you meant) with few major changes, the only people who could point out the differences are political junkies/nerds or polarized individuals: I Trump no matter what, once again, making it very unlikely you would hear a Trump hater touting his trade deals. I'm a deep Trump hater with libertarian leanings, I don't disagree in principle with his tax reform though I would've preferred he had reduced public spending first as to not blow out the debt out of proportion... which he did. Other than that, I really can't find much to like in him except for one and only ONE thing, that thanks to him Hillary lost!! Which is great but then again, had she won, one of the things I would've liked about her is that thanks to her Trump would've lost... I really hate both of them.

@sousa sousa Hillary was universally reviled by left-wingers and right-wingers. - I didn't compare him to Clinton in this comment so idk where this came from but whatever. The idea that Clinton was universally hated isn't true, yes the right and the populist left hated her but the establishment left treated her as the greatest thing since sliced bread. In fact Clinton had a lot more enthusiasm behind her campaign the Biden ever has or probably will. However besides that base of support yes everyone did definitely hate her, but I'd argue the same is true for Biden because his strategy is the exact same as Clinton's was, Run to the center to pick up right wing voters while ignoring the left cause they're a given (as far as this strategy is concerned at least). The problem with this strategy is firstly that the right loves Trump unconditionally, and secondly the left is not a given. There might definitely be poles out which suggests that Bernie voters would definitely prefer Biden to Trump, but if you've been paying attention than you could have probably guessed that from the beginning. The question isn't whether or not Bernie voters would prefer to have Trump, the question is whether or not Bernie voters will care enough to actually make the effort and go vote. Biden doesn't have to just be preferred, he has to be preferred by enough to for people to go to the polls, which seems incredibly unlikely to me given the incredible lack of enthusiasm around Biden's candidacy in general, and the degree of anger towards Biden on the part of many democrats.

Two years later, I would say that the theory that Trump has changed politics for the foreseeable future is true, but it actually worked in _Biden's_ favor. What's interesting to me is the contrast between Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden, and how their public perceptions influenced their performances against Trump. Biden these days isn't exciting, and he's always been gaffe-prone, but he's warm and agreeable. It's not hard to find anecdotes of common people who've met him and were moved with his kindness. He has also been well-liked by his colleagues, even by those who disagreed with his politics. He formed close friendships with John McCain and _Strom friggin' Thurmond_ (of course, in Biden's younger days when he was more conservative, he had some rather concerning views on segregation). When McCain passed, he spoke of how the two of them would strongly disagree with each other on the senate floor, then go to dinner together. For the most part, he's pretty much been in the dead center of the Democratic Party - as the party moved left, he moved with it. He's seen as a moderate and is a moderate. He wants to be able to make deals with Republicans, as he had been able to do in the senate. Progressives weren't excited about him, but voted for him regardless. On the other hand, he was able to pull in more conservatives who considered him a safe choice than Clinton had. The public perception of Hillary Clinton (and to a lesser extent, Bill as well) has never been particularly accurate - but it's interestingly less accurate on the left than the right. While she's not the radical socialist that Republicans see her as, leftists tend to see her as a conservative in progressive clothing, which simply doesn't hold up to scrutiny (unless you have this utopian image of Europe as a leftist paradise because of healthcare and college). It's easy to point out that she voted in favor of a few of Bush's notoriously terrible policies - notably the Patriot Act and the bill that eventually authorized his eventual invasion of Iraq - but when you zoom out and view the whole picture, she had one of the more progressive voting records in the senate. This isn't a mere coincidence - she's historically always been overall to the left of her husband, Obama, Biden, and and the median of the party. The explanation is simple - she's not charismatic or outwardly warm. She has a matter-of-fact personality and is cautious with her rhetoric. She doesn't portray herself as someone "you want to have a beer with," and comes off as disingenuous when she speaks of her concerns. Her campaign wasn't full of vaguely big ideas, and rather than saying why you should be excited about Hillary Clinton, her campaign focused on why you shouldn't vote for Donald Trump. While she has a decently sized fanbase, she wasn’t exciting enough to pull in outsiders. From my own experience as the rare Bernie voter who actually became an enthusiastic Hillary supporter, what began to warm me up and eventually win me over wasn’t from her own speeches or rhetoric, but from Bill Clinton's excellent endorsement speech at the 2016 Democratic Convention. Hillary lost the electoral college to Trump, who spoke of big but vague ideas. "Make America Great Again," "Drain the Swamp," "Build the Wall," and most disturbingly, "lock her up." Fast forward to 2020. Biden trounces Trump in both the popular vote and the electoral college. Why? Warning: the next paragraph contains strong liberal opinions. Trump was a reckless and uniquely bad president. He had a messy administration and open disdain for large swaths of the American public. The status quo hadn't been popular, but dear god it was better than what had replaced it. When Trump "drained the swamp," he filled it with sewage so awfully contaminated that people wanted the swamp back. He made COVID-19 into an issue about his popularity rather than a public health emergency - if he had handled it competently, it could have won him the election.

Here's a theory I've never heard from anyone on RU-vid or the mainstream: Bernie Sanders was the moderate in 2016. - moderate on foreign policy (Clinton was seen as an extreme warmonger even by US standards) - moderate on gun control (liberal but slightly to the right of Clinton since he comes from a rural state) - moderate on immigration (made both pro- and anti- immigration votes, depending on details) - moderate on trade (Clinton had to flip-flop on a major trade deal because it was so unpopular) - Single Payer healthcare is the worldwide standard and supported by (iirc) 50% of Trump voters (counting independents who voted Trump)

He was definitely the moderate on a populist spectrum. He had definite populist underpinnings without driving to the extreme, xenophobic lengths of Trump; whereas Hillary sat at the opposite end as a firmly establishment candidate. But socially and economically, Hillary was definitely the centrist, even if people didn't see it that way. Bernie is way to the left of Hillary on almost all of the major issues, and Donald is far to the right of Hillary socially, though they're both Neolibs in terms of the economy. The one area in which Donald might justifiably be seen as less extreme than Hillary is in terms of foreign policy, as he really wasn't a globalist neolib at all and was much more in the way of a populist isolationist. Whether or not you see globalist neolibs or populist isolationists as more extreme will depend on your own values and life situation; I think there's a solid argument either way.

10:00 The "Trump voters being shy" explanation of why there is such a significant disconnect between his popularity and his share of the vote reminds me of what I heard years ago from a friend who was in politics in West Virginia. He said that WV voted for George W. Bush both times, but if you asked, you could never seem to find anyone in WV who voted for him. WV has a long history of being a Democrat stronghold, and people vote Democrat very often because their family have been so affiliated for multiple generations. But West Virginians tend to be more socially and fiscally conservative as individuals, and so the state has stayed to the right as the Democratic party has moved further left. As a consequence, WV Democrat politicians tend to be more centrist.

This is exactly the sort of thing that has been happening in the UK. Most of the cities and urban constituencies - especially in the North of England - are traditionally Labour Party voters. But in recent years these same voters in urban constituencies have been swinging to the Conservatives. As Labour has moved further to the left, the working class Labour voters have shifted to the right. They're more socially conservative than a lot of people realise.

@@rhysellis928 I'm a subscriber to the idea that left-wing social politics are a lot more alienating than left-wing economics politics. Granted, the UK doesn't have much more room to go and still be "moderate" when it comes to economics, but the US has a TON of room. However, the problem with something like identity politics is every demographic you pander to you alienate another. It's not a very prudent strategy for winning a majority. There's also the phenomenon that the demographics being pandered to are mostly the white educated who are comfortable enough to care about weird esoteric moral theories especially since most of them divert from the idea that class is the real dividing factor.
@CaptinJangles
@CaptinJangles 4 года назад
@king turtle Well, the suburban coalition may be enough to win the House, but I'm not so sure about Senate or President. House as you probably know has a bunch of small congressional districts which means they have a lot of districts that represent urban and suburban areas, and since they're based on population more populous states and areas get more representatives. Senate and President kind of work the other way though. Plus, would those suburban voters really be that put off by someone who is more left economically but does not mention identity politics? I see that as gaining voters on top of the ones already in their pocket. Especially with Trump a lot of those suburban demographics will "vote blue no matter who" you have to imagine that would apply to a Sanders as well. The Sanders wing of the party on the other hand is not going to overlook getting screwed twice.

@@kylejohnson4615 Again, those "controversial" things are literally the smallest things that could be considered controversial. Compared to Trump, that is very low on the controversial scale. He is literally the best we have right now. I don't care if he messes up with his speeches or whatever, he has shown throughout his life that he would be a good political leader. All that matters is that we would have a democrat in office and hopefully start taking more steps forward instead of backwards. We need progressive, not whatever Trump's doing. To progress as a country, and gain respect, we need a democrat in office. The democrats have made their decision by picking Biden as their leader, and I shall stick with supporting him. We need him to win. He will do great for this country and what will matter in the end isn't his speeches or what little controversial things he says, it's the progression that this country will face. We need Trump out of office, and Biden is the only way to get democrats back in the white house.

In my perspective as a "far-left voter" voter as J.J described I see the election rn as sort of a 50/50 between the two candidates with a slight edge to Trump if I had to choose one. Trump to me has an ability to drive out his base very enthusiastically that I feel like Biden doesn't have. Biden to me seems just like an establishment democrat who wants to return to normal. The problem is that "normal" is the circumstance that got Trump elected in the first place. Gridlock in the federal government and no meaningful change for the average working-class Americans. If Trump can portray Biden the same he did with Clinton as just someone part of the establishment who shipped away jobs to China and things like that then I think Trump can win. However, this election is different from the coronavirus pandemic so I can't say for sure who will win in November. If Biden does end up winning in my view it will be due to a high number of people particularly suburbanites who will just vote for him, not for his policies but because they dislike Trump so much that they'll just vote for the person with the best chance of beating Trump.

I can explain the 2020 US Presidential Election as well! Two people run for president, one is an incumbent, the other selected by the establishment because they're too afraid of pushing their moderates to the opposing side. Two more people from fringe parties may run but they won't get very many votes as their votes leech from more palatable candidates and may cause unintended spoilers. And Americans vote for some --MPs-- I mean congressmen, but not every state is running an election for some reason.

@JMM33RanMA
@JMM33RanMA 4 года назад
You are clearly wrong that not every state is running an election. Unlike the UK and many countries, elections are constitutionally mandated at set intervals. Every seat in the House of Representatives is up for election every two years, and approximately 1/3 of the Senate. The terms of the President and VP have a fixed expiration date, and if something prevented the election, the Speaker of the House would become President until the election could be carried out. Many of the amendments to the constitution were about changing this system, and further change would require a difficult to do constitutional amendment. There is no requirement that there be two candidates for president or that there be two parties. However, your other assertions are reasonable if a bit inaccurate. An unusual number of legislative contests will be between non-incumbents this year due to many [mostly Republican] incumbents retiring. Our political parties are open [i.e. no membership] and are relatively permanent coalitions, whereas other countries either make coalitions just before or just after elections. Our government was preferred by the founders to not have parties, and the parties are not mentioned in the constitution or laws.
