Video introduces & explains the Solid Wood Bending Process, using a GHEbavaria bending machine type STUZAMA 2.
With this machine, bentwood chairs (see further video) or runners for sleighs can be produced.
Capacity per week, one shift: bended parts for 5000 chairs / sleighs: 6000 pairs of runners

That is just the coolest thing.....what does the second enclosure do? It's clearly more than just time acting there.........You folks make some phenomenal equipment, I'm very impressed!

Thanks. Actually, we supply these machines all over the world to those companies that are dedicated to high quality chairs and high performance sleighs or luges. Even those who developed the process (Thonet in the 1840ies) are our customers today.

I recently bought some chairs that I thought were plastic, but it turns out they are bentwood. I am trying to limit chemicals, so was concerned there might be all kinds of chemicals in bentwood to hold it together, but it looks like there aren't? Then again, these chairs were made in China, so who knows what's in them. (Sorry, China.) There was a weird, sweet smell that is still there a little, months later.... but it's interesting to know bentwood can be made without chemicals, Very cool.

Hi Christi, Sorry for answering so late, but we do have customers in China, too. It's not so unlikely that what you bought was made on our machine. For softening, we use only steam from water. No adhesives, no chemicals.

I have been bending 2x4 redwood and get quite a bit of spring back (2-3 inches) when it comes out of the clamps, should I just over bend to compensate or is there a better solution?

+Mike Grant : make a frame according to the required geometry. Fix it in that frame and dry it down to 8% moisture content or less. Then, it should stay in that shape and not loose it unless you do a further steam softening. Remark: wood bending is reversible.

Thank you sharing this animation to us but i have some questions 1) What is the temperature of the furnances? 2) How much force is applied to bend woods? 3) Is any solution used in this process?

Now I can go tell people that I know how to bend wood

Don't think so. Actually, it's a kind of black magic... ;-)

Regarding your questions: 1) approx. 105 ... 120°C 2) depending on thickness & width of workpiece. E modulus of beech when steamed approx. 3000 N/mm² 3) just steam from water - DI water works, any tap water will do. Nothing else. This method is THE process for producing excellent chairs, mechanical robust at small cross sections and with high yield of wood. Sleights with bended runners are so much more durable than those from laminated woods.

Thank you for what you have shown: I feel great I have 1 question: so what causes the tree to crack after bending?

I am bending wood size: 650*90*30. R250

Wood has visco-elastic properties. During the drying process, these visco-elastic behaviour is trensferred into a visco-plastic state from where it's finally freezing. If the cracks happen AFTER bending, it's because the wood is releasaed from the strap while there is still some elasticity inside (wood hasn't colled down yet). These elastic shares still cause tensile stress inside the part. As a result, cracks appear. What you can do to avoid is, opening the strap / clamp later. The part has to have cooled down at least. In your case, with a thickness of 30 mm (radial to bending !), a cooling time of some 45 ... 60 min should be O.K.. The bending ratio of R250 and thickness 30 mm is shouldn't be the problem at all, provided that you use appropriate end-stops during bending and cooling (elastic share freezing). For further questions, please go to our website and send us a direct e-mail. Kindly tell us on top, what is the gear you use for bending?
