My brain hurts, but I'm glad I watched! It helped me get some awesome ideas for future chords and lead progressions! Indie producing is hard, lol!

Music is such a beautiful and wondrous thing. The only reason I even watched this cartoon was that I accidentally turned the channel right as the theme song started to play and I liked it SO much that I sat and watched three of the re-run episodes and ended up enjoying show! Anyway, thank you for spending the time to create a video essay about these complex music theory topics. Makes me want to break out my viola and play around!!!

Wow, this is fascinating! It's really impressive that you coined the idea of of the relative axis interchange. Are there music theory journals? Maybe you should try to get it published.

This is absolutely incredible. I knew my ears identified that the theme was in C minor, but I am very glad that you went the extra step to effortlessly elaborate a full analysis. Incredible.

Shall I ask, would it also work if the final note finished with a Picardy Third?
@CadenceHira

@@eduardoarredondo511 It does resolve to a picardy third on the final note, unless I'm misunderstanding what you mean

Hey , this is neat ! Very smart stuff ! I like how you mix very conventional jazz theory with your own ideas ! I have a question : this axis thing (wich I love) , how can it be genralsed to other church modes ? I'm talking about that because the theme from "enchanting grom fight"(when Luz and Amity make some extra cool dance moves) is written in C# dorian. Anyway , as a theory nerd I enjoyed this video ! Keep up the good work dame Hira !
@CadenceHira
@CadenceHira 3 года назад
thank you! i'm glad you like it in terms of analyzing most tunes, axis interchange probably won't come up since its usage is fairly niche and relatively jarring when it happens (except for parallel minor's relative major since that is just parallel aeolian). in terms of enchanting grom fight, I think of it more in "composite minor" since, even though it has a pretty heavy dorian flavor, borrows melodic notes and the harmony from both aeolian and harmonic minor.

Great analysis here. I'm suprised more people have analysed this song. It's pretty wild considering it's from a kids show and Disney to boot.

Interesting of an analysis of chromatic and doubly chormatic mediants in the term of "Axis Interchange". Chromatic mediants are a series of chords that share a note relative to each other. For the example above, Abmaj7, when taken to its root of G#, shares a D# with the B chord (or you can change the B chord into a Cb chord, where the Eb would be shared between Cb and Ab). Fdim7 could easily be written as Bdim7, which can count as a type of leading tone chord into Cmin. To be honest, I feel like this is the chord progression here. Cm: i - VI7 - VII - V/VII - viio7 Normally, V/? chords are used to transition into the chord it's aiming for. However, in this instance, VII acts as its own root chord in this progression, and V chords can interchange between the viio and itself. With that, measure 9-12 could be written with the following progression, which goes into something interesting... Cm: i - VI7 - VII - bII - viio7 The bII (Db) chord is used instead. Db also can function as C#, which would be the ii chord of B if not for the fact that it's major. In other words, this piece uses a Neapolitan chord that functions as a iio-V-i, which is common in minor keys. As for the last two measures of B(#11) going into C, B already has three leading tones (B-C, D#-E, and F#-G). However, adding the #11 F acts as the seventh of a G7 which would resolve down to E as well, giving even more of a tension than it already would. --------------- However, your analysis is really good from a visual standpoint. It creates a better idea of how mediants connect to each other through this "Axis Interchange", as well as how tritone chords are connected. I enjoyed this analysis you made and I hope your videos continue to do well!~

Thanks for the kind words and analysis! I always welcome multiple forms of analysis since music isn't a science and there are different ways of contextualizing/interpreting a chord progression. Analyzing this chord progression with chromatic mediants is absolutely a correct way of doing it and it makes a lot of sense, though I've always been a bit hesitant to analyze chords as chromatic mediants since the explanation mostly boils down to voice leading and note similarity, which imo can be said about a lot of chords which can be analyzed in a way that shows a clearer relationship than voice leading. i.e. bVIma7 could be analyzed as a chromatic mediant of VI-7 but instead, analyzing bVIma7 as modal interchange from parallel aeolian shows a clearer relationship to the current tonality. Axis interchange is ultimately nothing more than explaining the relationship of "modal interchange of modal interchange" chords to the current key without resorting to voice leading as an explanation. I do understand where you're coming from though, and it's definitely a valid explanation. Hope this wall of text isn't incoherent lol. Cheers!

around 5:16 you mention how the Fdim7 could function as a Ddim7 chord since C minor already has a D half-diminished chord. imo the easier explanation is the Fdim7 functioning as a Bdim7 from C harmonic/melodic minor for that viidim7/i cadence. either way, good stuff
@CadenceHira
@CadenceHira 3 года назад
you're totally right, in context it absolutely functions like that. i did wanna illustrate the relationship of the diminished 7th chord to the 4 tonal centers rather than just analyzing it as a viidim7/i, since the tonal center is ambiguous. good catch tho, thanks!

By the way, the axist stuff is similar to a concept called the Axis of Tonality, which is used to extend the concept of functional harmony to the 12-tone serialism of Bela Bartok. The implementation is a little different (for example, Bartok uses major and minor chords built on the same root interchangeably), but the equivalences it draws basically do the same thing as your model of extending modal interchange. 12tone has a good video on the subject.

aw yeah, diminished 7ths! 12tone's favorite chord for this exact reason, and one of mine as well (though my real weakness is half-diminished 7ths with the 7th in the bass).
