I teach music theory and composition lessons! Email me for more info.
Cool music theory isn’t exclusive to Jacob Collier or jazz standards. Weird chords, funky time signatures, and other advanced harmonic concepts can be found in everything, from video games, to film scores, pop songs etc. I make these vids to talk about these concepts and make them accessible and fun.
as a cs major, your first mistake is assuming that the gba runs at a 100% consistent framerate. Most computers will fluxuate a lot in their performance. And while the average is 59.90089 whatever, the gba needs to compensate for its lower bound of performance. In short, the music is likely truncating that 59.90089 acerage down to just 59, and playing the music at a tempo that will work for that fps (hence 0.58% slowdown)
3:44 something i want to say about the part where they found an abstracted kaufmo, the piece of music that plays when they reveal kaufmo gave me heavy Pikmin 3 vibes, when the armoured mawdad (the first boss) gets revealed.
11:02 i heavily disagree i think it's very cool how we thought something to be explained via time signatures, turned out to be completely different it adds uniqueness to the track as it's a track that defies the norm of being explained by time signatures sometimes things are simpler than we think, it's just that we get too engaged in one point of view that we completely ignore others, even though that is, ultimately whay explains everything, and in a much more simple and intuitive way
Hello everybody and before I say anything I wanna say, no I am not a robot, this is a real person being genuine. There will come a time when all of us will die, and we’ll have to face God on Judgement day. How are you going to do on that appointment? Have you ever lied? Have you ever stolen? Jesus said, “ ‘But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart…” (Matthew 5:28 NKJV). So have you ever looked at a man/woman with lust? Have you ever used God’s name in vain? That’s called blasphemy and it’s very serious to God because you are taking God’s name and equating it to the S-word or just not giving it due honor. We don’t use our mother’s name as a cuss word so how much more should we respect God who gave us a mother and gave us life? In addition, Jesus said, “But I say to you that whoever is the angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment.” (Matthew 5:22 NKJV). Have you ever hated someone or held a grudge? God equates that to murder. So you and I are in deep trouble of hell, we have broken God’s commandments and we deserve jail time (aka hell). However, God did something wonderful, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16 NKJV). So repent! That means to be genuinely sorry for sin and to turn from sin, don’t be the hypocrite, and trust in the Savior: Jesus Christ. And you will have God’s promise of everlasting life as a free gift, “not of works, lest anyone should boast.” (Ephesians 2:9 NKJV). Our good works won’t get us to heaven but God’s mercy will, and he showed that mercy on the cross. “Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.’ “ (John 3:3 NKJV). God bless and read your Bible daily! Bible will keep you from sin and sin will keep you from the Bible.
In high school band, we played several pieces that changed time signature, but one piece in particular changed almost every measure, wild dances by douglas akey, 4/4, 5/4, 7/4, 5/8, 6/8, 7/8. Mars by holst is mostly 5/4 with one section of 5/2, overture to candide by bernstein, is mostly 6/8 with 3/2... most time signatures are really easy to understand, as she said in the beginning, the top number is how many beats, the bottom is what type of note is the beat. Most people overthink it, and confuse themselves, as that is how they were taught. Our band teachers taught us to always subdivide, 6/8 is two sets of triplets, if there are 1/8ths in 4/4 1 and a, etc. But all that needs to be thought while playing is how many. #/4 is easy count to #. For #/8ths, 6=2, 9=3, 12=4, play the triplets as written, but simplify it into 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4. Just remeber to swing a little and it all works out, it is much easier to count to 2 and play triplets, than it is to count to 6 in a quicker fashion, while playing the same notes. It is about the same as playing 4/4 in cut time, reading normally, rather than playing a 4/4 either at 2x speed or reading with 1/16ths.
I quite liked this, as both a music producer and a fan of Digital Circus myself. Some of the tracks in the new episode really reminded me a bit of Kane Pixels with its eerie emotion-neutral synths and chaotic wind sound when Gummigoo was having his existential crisis
I love seeing how music us made and how different instruments can give different vibes to different songs The toy piano sound can give ether a sinister or a nostalgic feeling depending on its use, the sinister vibe of this song is helped by the toy piano while in songs like Lemons and Pears (by EDU) it can help give a slightly nostalgic tone
TBH, the overall intent feels closest to 15/8 IMO. Original is slightly slowed in the middle (emphasize disorientation?), and the Masked Man version is generally faster and moderately rushed at the end (greater tension). The deviations from 15/8 feel like tweaks/expression more than explicit tempo changes.
hey Hira, I wanted to ask if there are any interesting stuff you have to say about songs that have mixed time signatures, lately I've listened to Marx's theme and realized how insane it is and really wanted to hear your opinion on it, even if not a video about it, would love to hear your thoughts in a comment too❤ ps: you made me so obsessed with time sigs and i dunno if it's a good thing because every song i listen to I just count the beats without noticing
@Cadence Hira I'm no expert but when you mentioned that the actual physical playback speed on the GBA was a fraction of a percent slower than expected, it got me thinking. Could the battery life of the device affect its processing speed? Perhaps it's playing slightly slower because its power source is slightly under-voltage?
Bo En’s 2013 album Pale Machine (the one that My Time is from) uses the Coltrane changes as it’s main motif, starting with it in the intro, and all culminating in My Time at the end
I don't really hear Hypnotize as Ebm over Eminor, but more like Emajor over Eminor, makes me feel like those Doom 1 songs with the power chords riffs harmonized with a major 3rd. So I guess it's a kind of polytonality too x)
Okay so I haven't actually listened to One-Winged Angel until now...except I've definitely heard that theme out of its intended context in various places for a very long time (at least 15 years). I'm legit kinda freaked out because I always assumed that tune came from a movie from at least 50 years ago. Suddenly I'm finding out that Sephiroph was behind it the whole time??🙄
tbf if you're ginna argue that 4/4 is stable enough so that there's no need for 8/8 16/8 etc... I think 3/4 is also natural enough so we wouldn't need 6/8 or 9/8
As a non-music person, I can say with confidence that I've witnessed wizardry. I am confused and I want to learn more but don't know where to start. Yay!
Lmao the rom is easy to get, more so if you play with VisualBoyAdvance EMU, just look mostly for europe ROMs, since the Spanish speaking community is always keeping those ROMs safe, also don't be afraid to go to a wacky website. I would know, I'm Argentinian and I mostly play things that I download and are not precisely 'bought', just use some judgement and you'll see wacky sites aren't that bad, just... U know don't use Softonic or anything of the sort?
