there is just something so damn satisfying about an uncovered shot where you don't have to be concerned about the fly!! and that last one is what i call an example of the perfect shot!!! although the hat with the respirator and coveralls does have a sci-fi movie feel to this one!!

My father was an explosives engineer working for Hercules power company for thirty years He specialized in open pit mines in the south west states of the USA. Open pit Copper mines in Arizona were a big part of his explosive skills. Occasionally he did jobs for various south west states that wanted to build a new highway or correct mistakes made when the road was first dug. Such as blasting away over hanging rock faces or reducing the face angle to prevent loose rock from rolling down slope and out onto the highway with out warning. He blasted a road that ran from Los Angeles California to Las Vegas Nevada a distance of 297 miles. His blasting efforts took about two years to complete. That highway is now one of the busiest roads in California and Nevada. This was in the late fifties early sixties. He took me along on one of the sections he was blasting which went up through some hills out in the middle of the Mohave desert. We used an old fashioned plunger detonator which used a magneto to generate enough juice to fire the blasting caps. He gave me the job of being the guy on the detonator. It was about one half mile long and climes through some of the hills. A loud siren was sounded so everyone would take cover. He would loudly call out, FIRE IN THE HOLE!!! That was my signal to push the plunger as hard as I could. Which I did. The hills lifted up off the ground and fell back in pieces. I was twenty and it was a big thrill to see all that rock and dust and noise. We were in a bunker about 1500 yards from the blast and yet some very small pieces of rock landed just in front of us. The shot was loaded with 80% gelamite high explosive.

Wonderful stuff Dave - buckets of satisfaction. So good seeing the fly rock for a change and some of the big a$$ chunks going skywards - whole 'nother level of enjoyment :) Apart from the effort of drilling I'd say that all counts as a real 'fun day' ! Great footage. Still always intrigued just how these things get there in the first place - often very random in distribution.

Watching things go bang is always great, I'm not sure if its good that I find them more exciting when they are near someone, (else's), house or a large diameter sewage line. Human nature I guess. I add that it was Guy Fawkes night here in UK this weekend when blowing stuff up is the order of the day.

Yeah🤘 that was so satisfying to watch! I grew up in the Harcourt Hills , solid granite. One of my first jobs was cutting and polishing granite on Mount Alexander. I think I want to start working with granite again😄👍

I'm sure the farmer was grateful, but I wonder what he's going to hit with his plow that is just under the top soil. You may be back for an encore at that site. I like that track of music when you play it. It sounds like "Hold on Loosely" by 38 Special. One of my favorite bands.

This kind of job must be the absolute funnest job to do. No coverup, no close houses, no warning sirens, just explosions. Mate, these are the jobs that I would cherish the most. I love when you're delicate with your tools, but a full send cord shot is money.
