A look behind the scenes at a medium size civil construction drill and blast job. Before I got involved in this job the management had passed over the drill and blast option as being far to risky and opted to use a large excavator with a breaker, when this did not manage, the decision was taken to weaken the rock by drilling a lot of large diameter holes in it and give it another go with an even bigger excavator (35 Tonnes). While this strategy can be helpful in Basalt rock it is usually not very successful in hard Granite. The breaker broke (along with hearts) and a s a result the blasting option was re-evaluated. With some difficulties we managed to safely blast all of the rock with out incident or complaint.
