The Okavango Delta in Botswana is a spectacular natural wonder, offering a unique blend of stunning landscapes, rich biodiversity, and vibrant cultural heritage. Its dynamic environment and the seasonal interplay of water and wildlife make it a remarkable destination for nature enthusiasts and safari-goers.
There are many high end safari lodges in the Okavando Delta. We stayed ar Rra Dinare, which means 'Father Buffalo' in the Setswana language - and we saw lots of buffalo here including several noisy ones that slept next to our tent at night!

The tree in the camp that I couldn't identify is a male marula tree, indiginous to Southern Africa (and parts of West Africa and Madagascar). The marula tree is known for its sweet, yellow fruit - and local lore says that same fruit becomes 'elephant alcohol' once it's fallen to the ground and fermented. Although scientists debunked the drunk elephant myth back in 2005, the alcohol association is not really surprising as the fruit is used to produce Amarula, the second-best-selling cream liqueur in the world. Traditionally the tree is used for everything from malaria cures to insecticide, not to mention as a food source - even more so in the summer months when the branches are often decorated with brightly coloured mopane worms, themselves an important source of protein for millions of people in Southern Africa.

The Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the world's largest inland deltas and a unique ecological marvel. Unlike typical river deltas that empty into the sea, the Okavango Delta is an endorheic basin, meaning it does not flow into any sea or ocean but instead dissipates into the Kalahari Desert.
Location: The delta is situated in the Kalahari Basin, primarily in the northwest of Botswana.
Source: It is formed by the Okavango River, which originates in the highlands of Angola. The river flows southeast, spreading out into the delta.
Size: The delta covers an area of approximately 15,000 square kilometers (5,800 square miles) during the dry season, expanding to over 22,000 square kilometers (8,500 square miles) during the peak of the flooding season.
The Okavango Delta in Botswana is renowned as one of the best places in the world for safaris due to its unique and rich ecosystem. Here are several reasons why it is such an excellent location:
Diverse Wildlife: The delta supports a wide range of wildlife, including elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo, hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of antelope species. It is also home to numerous bird species, making it a paradise for bird watchers.
Unique Ecosystem: The Okavango Delta is an inland delta that floods seasonally, creating a dynamic and varied landscape of channels, lagoons, swamps, and islands. This diversity of habitats supports a wide range of flora and fauna.
Water-based Safari Experience: Unlike many traditional land safaris, the Okavango Delta offers the opportunity for water-based safaris. Visitors can explore the delta by mokoro (a traditional dugout canoe) or motorboat, providing a different perspective on the wildlife and scenery.
Remote and Pristine Environment: The delta is relatively remote and has been well-protected, maintaining a pristine environment with minimal human impact. This adds to the authenticity of the safari experience, allowing visitors to encounter wildlife in a natural, undisturbed setting.
Seasonal Flooding: The seasonal flooding of the Okavango Delta, which peaks between June and August, creates a unique and dramatic landscape that attracts wildlife from far and wide. This seasonal change also offers different safari experiences depending on the time of year.
High-end Safari Lodges and Camps: The Okavango Delta is home to some of Africa's most luxurious and exclusive safari lodges and camps. These accommodations often offer personalized and intimate safari experiences with knowledgeable guides.
Conservation Success Story: The delta is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, reflecting its global significance and the successful conservation efforts to protect its unique biodiversity.
Cultural Experiences: In addition to wildlife, visitors can engage with the local cultures, including the San (Bushmen) people, who have a deep connection with the land and can share their traditional knowledge and skills.
Overall, the combination of diverse and abundant wildlife, unique water-based safari options, stunning landscapes, and high-quality lodges makes the Okavango Delta a premier safari destination.
