Having spent many, many pleasurable hours enjoying the Hudson River Valley, I always remember seeing this striking home sitting high above the river valley and wondering what it was and who lived there. I later found out the name but regretfully, never investigated it more thoroughly, being preoccupied with Hyde Park, Rhinebeck, Peekskill, West Point, Garrison, Boscobel and the stunningly majestic Storm King and Breakneck Ridge area just north of Cold Spring. Now, seeing the views from this house back towards the river and learning the history of Church and his vision of nature, I regret not further exploring this incredible house. I seem to remember that the estate was closed to the general public at the time (mid 1990s) and was only available by special permission. What a beautiful house! If you've never visited the Hudson River Valley just north of NYC and Westchester County, you are missing one of the most beautiful, iconic and historical areas in America. I miss it very much. Great post!

First let me say, Olana, what a wonderful home, interior and exterior. Frederic Edwin Church was an artist unfamiliar to me. His story is romantic, almost reaching rhapsodic. Church's paintings are almost ethereal in their beauty and detail. His home is a fantasy and the surrounding landscape, is breathtaking. His death a month after his lifelong partner and wife, is a real life tearjerker. Their journey to recover from the tragedy of losing their children is no less compelling. His encouraging and nurturing father seems almost too good to be true. Finally, he learned to paint left-handed and taught others, making him some kind of Bodhisattva at this point of the story. At the very least it's a movie storyline and the sets have already been built. Who in Hollywood could play the leading role and do him justice? None, I say. I almost forgot I was watching a post about a house. Thanks for adding texture to the tale. It really helps to understand the artist, architect and the man.

I studied Olana when I was younger just on my own. Visually eating up every picture of the interiors. Never considered what you said in your narration, "international style". Even though Mr. Church was mixing this with that, it just struck me revisiting the interiors, it's still Victorian!. Pattern upon pattern. And details upon details. I think the only thing I HADN'T noticed was when you talked about the only delineation between rooms was the arches. Very unique and interesting!!. As a general rule, I dislike "open concept" living. Why? Because you can't get a new perspective or mindset. You're in ONE room!. I love multi room spaces with doors. Ya can change your whole mood stepping into another space and closing the door!. So great to go back to Olana!👍🌟

The Greenport, NY in this video refers to the TOWNSHIP of GREENPORT within COLUMBIA COUNTY, NY. The city of Hudson, NY is also located in Columbia county on the Hudson River. Hudson, NY was once the home of New York's whaling fleet (during the 1800's) The VILLAGE of Greenport, NY is located in the township of SOUTHOLD, NY; which is within SUFFOLK county , NY; on Long Island, NY The Village of Greenport, NY is located on the north fork of eastern Long Island along Pipes Cove which is part of Peconic Bay (the bay is between the north and south forks). Greenport (village) NY was once home to fishing, and scallop-dredging fleets. It is now, mostly, a location for summer homes. Strangely enough, sometimes people from New York City, who are not familiar with the other areas of New York state will confuse the area of GREENPOINT, NY with the village of Greenport, NY GREENPOINT, NY "is the the northernmost neighborhood in the New York City borough of Brooklyn, in Kings county of the U.S. state of New York." (Google maps) The counties of Kings and Queens are on the western-most portion of Long Island."

It’s interesting two of my favorite places in the world are the Hudson Valley & the Eastern tip of Long Island. I thought it was because of nostalgia, being taken there often throughout childhood. @@samanthab1923 For sure! :) The Hudson Valley is gorgeous! I agree it must be the natural play of light and water as well as the mountains and the seasons. The beaches on forks of eastern Long Island are also beautiful I think that it is because of the light reflecting off shore.
