Videos like these always put myself into new perspectives. Its so interesting how foreigners come and appreciate buildings that we locals take for granted. I would nv imagine them loving the architecture as much as like how Georgia does it. To us, we dont even bat an eye at these old buildings

Block 46/47/48 at Sterlings Road (Quesnstown) is also worth taking good Instagram pictures due to it being the first completed HDB flats after the Bukit Ho Swee fire! (One of the oldest modern HDB flats ever built) It‘s vintage look will surely makes gives you an unforgettable experience! Don‘t forget to visit the HDB flats at Selegie Centre (Little India) and the Circuit Road (MacPherson) too if you have the time! 😊

Gosh this neighbourhood has certainly gone ahead since I stayed there at Wangz some years ago. Tiong Bahru Markets are wonderful to wander through. So many new eateries. Must visit again when next in SG. This is a great series to do. I’ll look forward to recognising all the areas I’ve been and to put new ones on the list. Thanks 🙏 Georgia.

Hi ,new fan here..just found out this Tiong Bahru video. Luv it because i used to live there years ago, near the market, luv their hawker, market place, the buildings, little alleys, mini garden backyards,etc. Back then, there were less cafe around, more family owned shops. Such lovely place there, pretty near Orchard road where i used to work. Thank You So Much for this lovely, memories filled video of Tiong Bahru, luv the changes there too✨

I love The Foodie Market Place (fmp) there. They sell plain frozen breaded chicken strips and I will air fry it. Then I will make a Korean style soy garlic sauce to go with it. They sell cheap Johnson Ville sausages too. Ntuc is selling them for 11 plus but the fmp is only selling it for 8 dollars. The pasta is cheap too. If you are looking for pink salt and pepper or herb seasoning, you can find it there too. The olive oil is nice and they have nice balsamic vinegar too.

Happy to know that you love the unique architecture in Tiong Bahru. You’ll be glad to know that Tiong Bahru estate was built by the British under the Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT), this was like the precursor to HDB. There’s even an air raid bomb shelter built in the centre of Tiong Bahru Estate.

I live in Tiong Bahru and you’re welcome for tea anytime! Check out Bincho, a hidden Japanese izakaya and you must definitely have Loo’s Hainanese Curry Rice that has been a local culinary institution since 1946 serving curry that reportedly takes 3 days to make (only open for lunch!)

This is probably my number one favourite place to visit when I float through Singapore once or twice a year. Two absolute musts in Tiong Bahru for me are Books Actually and the Food Centre above the Market. An easy afternoon. As I like architecture, I love the Black and Whites, and walking around the English place named streets of Alexandra Park gawping at the lovely Black and Whites is fantastic., too.

I grew up at Tiong Bahru area. Yes, even then, I knew it was a special estate. I like the spot whereby there will peope hanging up their bird cages, and admiring their pet birds as they sing (not sure whether this area still exist). Also like the spiral staircases, vintage window grille . Of course, the food at the hawker centre, though the old market has changed to the current one.

All HDB flats in Singapore are subjected to a 99 years lease restriction, which means that those flats will be demolished once the lease expires. Due to a shortage of land in Singapore, 99-years leasehold is a very practical solution to allow lands to be recycled so that new flats can be built for the future generations to come! On top of that, older HDB flats tend to have many structural issues such as watee leaking from roof or even collapse wall due to wear and tear. That's why the Singapore government have introduced the Voluntary Early Redevelopment Scheme (VERS) to redevelop older towns in Singapore, but such measures wouldn't happen for at least another 15-20 years to come. The HDB flats at Sterling Road was completed in 1961, which means the lease will expire by 2060. I hope you will visit there soon!
@patstar5548
@patstar5548 4 года назад
I don't think those art deco Tiong Bahru flats would be demolished once they reach their 99 years lease. If I'm not wrong they are on the conservation list. What is certain is they would be taken back and refurbished by the government and might be leased out again or repurposed.
@MarcGarnaut

The flats in Tiong Bahru are under conservation ColdplaySwifties13 - You are right that they are on a 99 year lease, but they will not be knocked down

Don't get sucked in! It's a lovely neighborhood from a 'living museum / heritage' perspective, but the ridiculous rents there are not worth it. Many of the home shophouse units look nice on the outside, but are very dark on the inside owing to their historical structural architecture (Chinese shophouses are long and narrow). And many of the SG local communities have been forced out by unaffordable sky rocketing rents after the area has been designated a trendy expat magnet.

Hi Georgia, I like the beats of your starting music. May I know the title of the song and the artiste name? You know this insight could be a profitable avenue if you could at the end of the video, do an end credits of the name of the song, song artiste name, your clothing, makeup, brands etc and get promotional revenue from those brands and artistes. Duplicate end credits to your RU-vid description.
