Thank you for watching! Do you dress up when you travel to Europe?
@susanfanning9927

Fantastic advice, Chiquette! Several years ago I was a mentor to two French students in the US. The first thing they wanted to do was to go shopping because of the quality clothes here that cost much less than in France. Each of them also bought dresses to take back to their mothers. They didn't dress any differently than their fellow students. They also bought pink cowboy hats and western-style boots, lol. I live in a city that's a big tourist attraction for Europeans. It is so easy to spot one--big camera around the necks of the men, fanny packs, cheap sneakers (not made for walking very far), and incredibly tight clothes. I've spent a lot of time in England, and the English don't dress much differently than their American counterparts. On the other hand, it can be a good thing to blend it so that you are not seen as an easy target.

Hi Susan! Great feedback here, thank you for sharing you insights. Dressing sloppy can be done in any culture. The Cowboy gear is such a different look than anywhere else in the world isn't it? We've come a long way I feel, and traveling has become easier, clothes more affordable and the lines are becoming blurry. I see fashion week and from NY to Milan they all look the same to me now. Perhaps being unique and different is what will be sought after. When I travel I can easily see predominant trends and what stands out to me is uniqueness and character, but that's me. Thank you for watching and taking the time to leave a kind word.

I appreciate your perspective as I have been watching European travel videos and know the minute I speak, it will be obvious I am a tourist. 😂 I believe tourists should research and show respect for local dress codes for sure. Thank you.

Hi Teresa, absolutely! Doing a quick search on attire ahead of a trip can go a long way. Showing respect is part of having manners in general isn't it? I often times get labeled as American and though I try to not stand out like a soar thumb, I prioritize comfort, especially in footwear. It's a big problem for me and walking for thousands of steps is no easy tasks. I would love to wear a beautiful dress with tights but that wouldn't go with supportive sneakers so I just resume to my jeans. And thus the American label. I could overhear people on the street talk about my family and I in French and while I think we are mindful, I wasn't going to get my kids a new wardrobe either. In the back of my mind I would love to dress how I normally do here, but I just can't. And we should all be able to wear what we want guilt free no?

Thank you for looking at things from a different viewpoint. I am an American and have lived and traveled a lot throughout Central and South America and Asia. Europeans may wear classic clothes while in Europe, but I shudder to remember the Europeans I have seen so many times in conservative non-Western countries who apparently decided that since they were in a tropical country they could basically go naked. Germans in Sri Lanka walking around in public streets in thong bottoms and bikini tops. Scandinavians in India in see-through gauze dresses with nothing underneath. Brits in Mexico wearing bathing suits into active churches. And in Bangkok, best to just go blind-folded in tourist areas. But still on you-tube it's nothing but lectures by Europeans to Americans about how unclassy we look while traveling.

Hi Belle! I love this comment so much!!! And I agree, I forgot the days when speedos and thongs and topless were the norm, not in America. It absolutely works both ways. I still see some speedos now and then and they scream Europe. I didn't want to call out specific countries there, the similarities in nudity options is noticeable. Growing up wearing a bra was frowned upon and looked at as pretending to be fake and unnatural. Only women with substantial busts were allowed. Sheer tops were the norm. I cringe at those days. Now as a parent, I bought a padded bra for my 8 year old lol. Thank you for pointing out that not only American tourists need some guideline revision. And on this point I think nudity trumps dressing in pajamas, not that pajamas are ok 😅. You seem to have such vast experience, it is a delight to read about it. You just made my day. Have a wonderful day Belle! 😘

Thank you for the video . It’s so far one that really makes sense! Every influencer in you tube make videos telling us how to dress when we travel, like it’s shameful to dress the way we do in America. I live in Miami florida and I see tourists from al over the world here, we don’t care how tourists dress trying to be someone else is the shame in this matter 💯 Thank you again!

Thank you for sharing your kind feedback Ramona! This trend to dress up and different when you travel is getting out of control. What happened to being on vacation, eating all day and enjoying the pleasures of life? Nothing shameful about good old earned money to spend where we please no? 😘

What a great perspective. My son took a trip to Great Britain, wearing mostly sweatpants, gym shoes and hoodies. I was horrified 😱 but I didn’t say anything. It was his first European trip. He had a fabulous experience, met very nice people, it was the trip of a lifetime for him. So, yeah. It’s really not about the clothes but the people in the clothes - a very American 🇺🇸attitude.

We do the worrying for them, but they have a blast don't they? He will learn to dress better later in life, maybe at his wedding, or maybe never ( I know a few 😉) but regardless, he will have so much fun along the way. 😘

A very interesting video, thanks for recording it. While I agree with the premise of the quote from USA Today that having the freedom to go gender free, etc. is a good thing, I am still not a fan of things like wearing pyjamas in public. :) I do dress up when I go to Europe, but I don't buy a separate wardrobe for it. I dress smart casual to business almost all the time either way, other than when I'm exercising or taking the dogs around the block :) All of that said, your video is very interesting, and you're right, you can only dress for yourself and need to wear what makes you look and feel good. Having spent decades in jeans and a t-shirt, I came to appreciate how much better I look in even a slightly more elevated look (better cut jeans and nicer shirts) but also to love how I look in tailored clothes, so that's what I choose to wear most of the time. I'll admit I am ok to wear running shoes for long walks, but I have been known to do 20-30k steps in a day in leather shoes :). Interesting that the guards didn't stop people coming in to churches in Europe for not dressing properly. When I went to Italy as a teen, we were not allowed in because my mother had her shoulders showing in a tank top and my brother and I were in shorts. And yes, the guards stopped us and barred our entry. Maybe things have changed in the interim. Either way, I will always be respectful of the culture I am visiting, and dress appropriately, especially if they make a point of saying there is a dress code. I do think tourists should be, and are, appreciated, but I have also seen a lot of tourists who expect the world to allow them to ignore the rules, etc. because they are tourists (and often from English speaking countries). And I don't think that is how things should be. Maybe that's just me... :) Clearly a topic we could have a very long conversation about! :)
@Chicquette
@Chicquette Год назад
A yes, let the controversy begin 🤓. This video is different, I see a wave of trend to cover the same topic of shaming Americans for how low they dress in foreign countries and doing a bit of my own research I've come to realize it's a choice not lack of style. Big difference! I also wanted to highlight the benefits of the American style which is now a worldwide adopted style isn't it? Not talking pajamas here, or flip flops, but the good old jeans and white sneakers with cardigan and a comfy fleece. If that's what American tourists like to wear, it's a choice we shouldn't be in a hurry to correct. Can we see more videos on how tourists dress in USA instead? 🥹 Just sayin.. it should work both ways no?
@tophose999
@tophose999 Год назад
@@Chicquette Oh, I see where you're coming from. I'm not trying to shame most Americans, although I have definitely seen some dress in ways that I'd be ashamed to dress :). I've seen people of all kinds of other nationalities dress that way too! I do find it funny that the theory is "dress in what you want", but Americans have adopted a uniform that often *has* to be the dressed down, athleisure clothes. I hear from men on forums regularly who get called out, teased, or mocked for choosing not to wear sweat pants and a t-shirt. So the concept of freedom of expression is somewhat of an illusion. I don't think I see a lot of tourists in the US wandering around in suits, so I'd say that most of them that I run across are already adopting US dress style when vacationing there. At least, the ones I see in the parts of the US I visit. Also, I doubt there is a need for most people to see videos on how to dress like an American given how much US culture is exported to the rest of the world. I'd say the scales tip a fair bit in that direction already. They just need to turn on Netflix or most RU-vid channels to see how people dress in the US :)
@Chicquette
@Chicquette Год назад
@@tophose999 Yes, if course I was teasing with the videos on how to dress American. Most movies come from here so we have plenty of examples to look at. There is quality on all sides though. A good pair of western leathers boots and belts with buckle, and I mean the real ones from Arizona. Or even the Disney character tees. They make some wearable styles as well, at least used to, haven't shopped there in a very long time. And the high price definitely sets them apart. Even as a souvenir, back when I was a teen, wearing an American shirt after returning to Romania, I was definitely the cool one. No one else had anything like it. Dressing sloppy can be done in any country and it's not what I was referring to. But I appreciate your input as always. I think we understand each other ☺

I think vacation clothes could be different from travel clothes. Vacation to some people means rest, play, swim, lounge. But travel also means functional, practical, adaptable to local customs and weather conditions. My take on casual American style, it seems to revolve around function only, no iron, no fit/hemming or tailoring, no folding/ hanging, spilling and animal hair doesn’t show, doesn’t cost much, doesn’t need repairs. I’m not sure I would label it a style. Interesting conversation though.

You have to take into consideration that Europe is not a country. -Just like Africa is not a country. There are many very different nations situated in Europe. Thus you can't really use a general dresscode, when shopping for holliday clothes.. For instance nordic countries are traditionally a lot more down to earth, than for instance Italy etch. It's probably best to check out the specific country you plan to visit.

Hi Fernie! Yes absolutely, each country has it's own predominant fashion styles. This is why I recommend researching ahead of time. This video is more of a push back against all the videos that expect Americans to change how they dress when traveling, insinuating an inferior fashion style. It is far from the truth. Big difference between choice in dressing casual vs not knowing how to dress properly. Thank you for watching and sharing! I appreciate the feedback as always 😊

Its typically the British and French that talk negatively about Americans. As American, we can be slobs. We have taken casual to the extreme with wearing pajamas and wrinkled clothes. That is unacceptable IMO but when I was in Toulouse for 6 weeks I never saw ppl "dressed up" they basically wore jeans and sneakers (not just all white). They looked very much like most Americans. So I think in Paris you may get some more fancy outfits but outside of Paris you see much more casual outfits. And ppl need to know if going into churches or sacred places you have to cover arms and legs and sometimes hair. I think it's more of a running joke to make videos about...I don't take it personally. I just say be respectful
@Chicquette
@Chicquette Год назад
Thank you for sharing. There are definitely extremes to both sides. It's refreshing to hear how people dress outside the metropolis. Pajamas, and indecent exposure is never ok. And being ignorant of rules is also not an excuse to anyone traveling. Even at Disney in Florida or anywhere I travel really, I see teens sometimes with barely any fabric on. As Adults we would think we grow out of these kinds of clothes and just learn to be more respectful. Anyone watching this channel cares about fashion about dressing and hopefully would pay attention to avoid the major faux pas. Thank you for watching and for the feedback H R.

Hi Sue! Yes I agree, pajamas are never ok, or half naked or lazy. We are all lazy at some point, that's when I wear monochromatic lol. But these extremes are not the rule. Let's keep our standards high. i don't think it's an excuse to dress inappropriately just because you are a tourist. As Americans dressing more casual, I like some styles, others not so much. I'm just saying that when taking the homeland with you, perhaps being true to yourself is worth maintaining no matter the location.

Sigh. I'm American. I live in a Boston, Massachusetts suburb. I'm so tired of the athleisure look. I dress more Scandi/French chic. I've got jeans with stylish fuller legs. I've got a nice plain white button shirt, and a blue striped one. I've got marinieres (Breton tops), 3 pairs of white sneakers (3, 5 or 8 hour ones, yeah, lol), leather belts, a nice Levis jacket, a trench coat, etc. It's all classic, comfy, not formal! I dont wear many dresses and I never wear herels. Yet I go out to stores here, or the post office, or anywhere, and people are in tight tight skinny jeans, black leggings, or sweatpants,with huge oversize sweatshirts and sweat pants and Crocs. Then theres the horror of a baggy tunic top and capris on chubby older ladies. So unflattering, so frumpy. I just wish people were in Levis and western shirts annd boots. At least theyd look cool, not outdated and sloppy.

Hi Magdlyn, this was pretty funny, I am sitting here reading and laughing by myself Sunday Morning 6:30 am. Bostonians dress very athletic indeed. I still need to wrap my mind around why that is. Perhaps because they are health conscious and do work out more? They probably wear the latest and greatest trend when it comes to sneakers and leggings. We do have quite a few sports brands offices here. My favorite was the 3, 5, 8 hours sneakers. Wow. I think I have the 3 and 5 hour ones. The 8 hour ones are black New Balance sock like that never fail me. Those are the one I wear on the scooter racing my kids. I would love to feast my eyes on more blue and white type of outfits you mentioned as well. The Breton style and Levi, such a classic, can't get enough of it. Thank you for stopping by 😘
