Welcome to a style analysis/video essay (kind of?), this time focusing on the differences (and similarities) in fashion between the US and Europe. In this video I focus on how Europeans and Americans think about fashion, the importance of location, notable similarities, women's vs men's fashion in both countries, and what could be generally categorized as American fashion or European fashion. As a European currently living in the States, I hope I can shed some light on this topic and hopefully provide you with interesting information :)
➢notes:
-all video footage (apart from my B-ROLL lol) was taken from RU-vid/tiktok, mainly from Vogue France from their “what people are wearing in Paris” series (links listed below)
-I could’ve also gone into detail about the poverty issues in the US, which reflects pretty heavily on what kind of clothes consumers buy (which then leads into the overall impression that American fashion is “laid-back”), but I feel like this would’ve lead into a completely different topic I don’t have enough information on. What I will say though, is that as a Finnish woman living here, a lot of Europeans forget how spoiled they are by their healthcare systems etc. If you’re broke in the US, there’s no safety network (usually provided by the government) to help you like in most European countries. The wage gap here is worse and, as we all know, most people don’t get paid fairly. This is where places like goodwill & Walmart come into play - for some Europeans shopping for clothes in what could be considered a “grocery store” would be weird, but people have to work with what their budgets are. With thrifting becoming less and less affordable due to the Depop reselling culture, the options for affordable clothing are very limited. I could go on about this topic, but all this to say is that Europeans can be pretty harsh in their judgment of American fashion without considering these factors, and these are important factors to consider in the overall equation.
-I want to reiterate that Europe isn’t strictly “clean-cut” or “minimalist” and that there are many various styles and fashion is becoming increasingly a way of self-expression. A lot of what I have experienced though, is that different is bad unless you live in a major city where it’s normal to dress however you want. And in recent years it seems fashion is becoming more versatile on the whole. The same goes for American fashion, not everything is “loud” or maximalist, and a lot of people prefer minimalism and structured looks here as well.
