Welcome to a style analysis/video essay (kind of?), this time focusing on the differences (and similarities) in fashion between the US and Europe. In this video I focus on how Europeans and Americans think about fashion, the importance of location, notable similarities, women's vs men's fashion in both countries, and what could be generally categorized as American fashion or European fashion. As a European currently living in the States, I hope I can shed some light on this topic and hopefully provide you with interesting information :)
➢notes:
-all video footage (apart from my B-ROLL lol) was taken from RU-vid/tiktok, mainly from Vogue France from their “what people are wearing in Paris” series (links listed below)
-I could’ve also gone into detail about the poverty issues in the US, which reflects pretty heavily on what kind of clothes consumers buy (which then leads into the overall impression that American fashion is “laid-back”), but I feel like this would’ve lead into a completely different topic I don’t have enough information on. What I will say though, is that as a Finnish woman living here, a lot of Europeans forget how spoiled they are by their healthcare systems etc. If you’re broke in the US, there’s no safety network (usually provided by the government) to help you like in most European countries. The wage gap here is worse and, as we all know, most people don’t get paid fairly. This is where places like goodwill & Walmart come into play - for some Europeans shopping for clothes in what could be considered a “grocery store” would be weird, but people have to work with what their budgets are. With thrifting becoming less and less affordable due to the Depop reselling culture, the options for affordable clothing are very limited. I could go on about this topic, but all this to say is that Europeans can be pretty harsh in their judgment of American fashion without considering these factors, and these are important factors to consider in the overall equation.
-I want to reiterate that Europe isn’t strictly “clean-cut” or “minimalist” and that there are many various styles and fashion is becoming increasingly a way of self-expression. A lot of what I have experienced though, is that different is bad unless you live in a major city where it’s normal to dress however you want. And in recent years it seems fashion is becoming more versatile on the whole. The same goes for American fashion, not everything is “loud” or maximalist, and a lot of people prefer minimalism and structured looks here as well.

Loving the personal experiences and opinions I'm seeing in the comments 💗 Just wanted to quickly mention here that I left out a lot of content that is related to this video - this is because when it comes to "Europeans vs Americans", there has been a lot of ignorance on both sides about why things are the way they are. I also don't want to use my voice to speak for Americans since I still have very minimal experiences living here, but I would love to expand on American fashion more perhaps with some American people present to share their personal experiences and knowledge. I have expanded on some of my opinions in the "notes" section in my description. First and foremost though I want to say that a lot of European media reflects pretty poorly on what the average American person's life is (actually) like (and vice versa a lot of American media romanticizes Europe and overlooks a lot of its problems). From poverty and class issues to diversity and various forms of systematic oppression, there is a lot we as Europeans cannot understand about the American life without experiencing it firsthand. Similarly, Europeans can come across rude or uncaring to most Americans, because our cultures and social norms are very different from one another (and frankly, many Europeans in my experience are spoiled by how generally "well" things are going for us, and we often don't realize it). I wanted to avoid mentioning any of the hateful/insensitive terminology that has been used to describe the fashion of these places, because I wanted this conversation to be eye-opening rather than regressing to an "us vs them" mindset. I think there is a lot of beauty in fashion and how it is used to express individuals and communities, and I hope this can spark interesting conversations on this age old topic! :)

Yes! It's so tough!! When it comes to finding personal style in Europe, I feel like "ignorance is bliss" is a very necessary mindset to learn. I always get people staring at me or turning their heads when I visit family in Finland 😩

I live in the Midwest in the US, and I would say fashion here is very removed from East Coast/West Coast fashion. People do follow trends here, but are usually behind on trends or ignore the more extreme ones. I live in a suburb right outside a large city, so people are a little more fashion-forward and conscious of how they are presenting themselves. However, I grew up in a rural area of my state where there isn't very much of an emphasis on fashion at all. Clothing is often very utilitarian and is focused on what is comfortable and practical. Often, in more rural areas, people have a job that is a trade or that involves physical activity, which influences what people wear a lot. It is not uncommon at all for people to be out in public in what they wore to their jobs, or even its torn/dirty clothing. Rural areas also tend to have a lower standard of living, which influences what people can afford to wear and how much money they can invest in looking fashionable. Overall, people do not put as much thought into what they are wearing and don't always see fashion as a way to make an impression or as an important way of presenting themselves.
@jemi_
@jemi_ Год назад
Thank you so much for your input, I was hoping someone from the States would comment 😊Yeah I've noticed that fashion here is rarely linked into how well educated, civilized etc a person is. Europeans place very heavy emphasis on first impressions and a lot of it is based on fashion, so they often tend to judge a person for their looks before getting to know them. It's been really refreshing living here and see people for their personalities rather than if they're wearing "the right color combo" or whatever.

@@jemi_ I definitely think that is generally true! In some places fashion is used as a status symbol and to signal wealth, so there can be a strong emphasis on wearing certain brands or having designer bags, etc. But again, it really depends where you are in the States!

I agree with the layering point. In the Pacific Northwest, practicality and layers are important but it has to be waterproof. Flannels and blundstones are commonplace per the laid back west coast style.

Been going around the Baltic and Northern region of Europe for the past 4 months (work related) I’ve really enjoyed studying the people. Observations I’ve seen when it came to fashion is I would say like the young adults is the girls dress like it’s early 2000’s and the boys dress like modern day gen z. Older people that I assume are millennial and gen x dress like modern professionals. The closest I would say that dress like Americans are the English. I don’t know how to describe but I’ve been seeing this contrast between American and European fashion. I’ve been going out in dark blue jeans, a hoodie with a t-shirt underneath, and running or athletic shoes.

Yes, I think definitely Europe is heading towards a more versatile environment in fashion due to the younger consumers wanting to experiment more and adhere to what might be trending in America. I think the UK is it's own kind of strange space between American and European fashion for sure, because they have a pretty clear division in their love for "the classics" and "the trendy". Since the UK is similarly famous like the States when it comes to pop culture, it's also more universally accepted for them to have more style experimentation there. It's definitely interesting how much our environment affects how we act and dress!

I also think, that the architecture of cities have something to do with fashion. For example, here in Germany many big cities lost many buildings in the last war and the houses they build after are usually really big- brand like H&M loves this kind of buildings, because they need lots of space for their clothes. But if you found a town with a historical city core, you usually can find many little stores and non-chain-stores in there. People tend shop their clothes in them, because the bigger brands are mostly outside of the city Center in this case. This contributes in more diverse fashion. I also saw this in some Italian towns, where they don’t allow bigger stores to keep the historical image alive- although those little shops can be more expensive. Some cities have such great differences in their fashion choices, it’s so interesting

This is such an interesting point! I definitely noticed that places like Bremen and Stuttgart, while sitll having stores like H&M, had a lot of local shops people seemed to frequent. It was really refreshing to see!

I think that US culture is very much rooted in individualism so it makes sense that the fashion would reflect that. I have heard that in places like California or Jersey there is a good amount of emphasis on your appearance (but this may have to do with being skinny or being tan and “looking healthy”… not completely related to fashion)
@jemi_
@jemi_ Год назад
Yes, I agree with this! Individualism/finding your own style is much more encouraged in the US than in Europe, and I do believe the beauty standards also affect dress code heavily. I definitely notice "body trends" if you will, more in places like LA and NYC, which in turn affects fashion.

I still haven't visited LA yet, but I hope to one day! I 100% agree with your statement, finding one's own style and way of expressing themselves through fashion is much better than conforming to any "standards" or "trends". I don't know about the rest of Europe, but in Finland crocs have been popular for a while. My family personally only used them for labor like berry picking, we never actually wore them when we were in town haha.

how do americans dress in the US? What are the clothing styles in the US?
@jemi_
@jemi_ Год назад
So, I could write a whole essay on this, but simultaneously my personal experience is so lacking in this department that I wouldn't be able to tell you accurately (as a European living in NYC haha) - Like I mentioned, American fashion is pretty location-dependent and sometimes even life situation dependent. So, say you're in a sorority, there's a whole sorority-specific style out there that most of them dress according to. Or if you live somewhere like Texas, you'll probably lean more towards relaxed comfortable styles. In the end it all boils down to two things: 1. location 2. trends Unlike in Europe, there are many different types of cultures within the States, most of which originate from outside of the US. So, Latino women are more likely to dress how women in their culture have dressed in the past for example. What this variety means though, is that 1. there can be no singular style or rule of dress in America 2. trends are readily accepted, because of this multi cultural diversity. I think unless you live in somewhere like NYC though, Americans tend to dress more comfortable and less fashion oriented. Frankly, fashion here, while it is very freeing, is also overwhelming because there's always something new to try or a new trend. And most people can't afford to shop outside of big chain stores like Walmart/target/thrift shops, because the poverty situation here is drastically worse from most European countries. Sorry for such a long reply, I hope this kind of helps you haha! If you want to research more, I'd definitely look into American fashion history and see what influenced it to become what it is now. :)

I disagree regarding the similarity northern europe = east coast and southern europe = west coast. Europe in general looks more like the east coast of the US regarding fashion. The US west coast is its own thing. Plus, the US have the influence of southern america, africa, east and southeast asia, all cultures that in European fashion have had their moment in specific periods in history, but don't influence the euro fashion as much as in the US. I agree that northern europe shows less colours compared to southern europe, especially during summer. One exception is the UK, where I find they have the most craziest fashion of the whole continent. I also can confirm that europeans HATE athleisure when going out. You only wear athletic or sporty clothes when doing sports.

You’re probably right with regards to that, I definitely don’t have enough experience with regards to west coast and Southern Europe. 😅 I feel like the UK is like the “America” of Europe, its own little bubble, or at least it felt like that to me during my time here.

You can't really talk about THE European fashion. There's a difference in every country and even a bigger from north to south. You will see more women all styled up in the south when going for groceries than in the north, for example. Generally speaking, if you speak of Europe as a whole, we're more into style, adding some trends, and also we dress to impress. Another example of not mixing all Europe together, is e.g. London, where people at daytime at work dress more uniformized but when they go out they wear sometimes the craziest Outfits. And some things that are worn in the US, like those tight dress etc, are worn here in swinger Clubs. 🤣 And yes, European dress to impress in a sophisticated, classy, understatement way.
@cs296
@cs296 Год назад
To add: we don't like to look "cheap", even if we don't have money and can only afford inexpensive and second hand we go for classy, style, chic. As Karl Lagerfeld said: if you wear jogging pants you lost control over your life. Fact.

Hi! This is why I divided most European fashion according to regions later on in the video. While European fashion is varied depending on what country you live in, like you said, there are some unspoken expectations across Europe when it comes to fashion. While it can't be lumped into one generalization, it isn't completely divorced from the notion that multiple countries share similar taste in fashion. For example, Scandinavian fashion is very similar across Scandinavian countries. These similarities even spread into architecture and interior design etc. As for the UK, I personally don't include UK as part of the EU, both because of brexit, and because since I've lived there myself, I noticed it being very much its own kind of place. The UK has always been a kind of in-between of Europe and the States. Like when you think about celebrities, the list is endless for the ones from the US and UK, but I wouldn't be able to name very many European celebrities who genuinely attract as much attention as the ones from the UK/US. To me personally it always felt like its own entity, separated from the rest of Europe in varying degrees. They still share some styles, but like you said, in the UK similarly to the US, people aren't afraid to experiment or try things outside of the norm (and that's not at all a bad thing)! :)
