Olga Gursky, PhD, Boston University, Boston, MA, shares insights into the potential role of amyloid-collagen fibrils in pathologic biomineralization in calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD). High-resolution cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) structures reveal that amyloid fibrils have acidic residues that bind calcium, acting as nucleation sites for calcification. The synergistic effect of amyloid and collagen in promoting calcification is highlighted. This interview took place at the XIX International Symposium on Amyloidosis (ISA) in Rochester, MN.
