Exploring an Abandoned 1990's Movie Theater with Power !

Bring your popcorn as today we are going to the movies, but unfortunately no shows are playing at this time. Instead we step inside this Retro Movie Theater abandoned in 2019. With power left on, we are free to walk around this abandoned nostalgia wasteland from the past. Its been years since I've been to the movies and sadly I cannot say when I will be returning due to global shutdowns. Places like this bring back fond childhood memories, seeing a place that echoed laughter and taught many people life lessons through cinema lies dusty and decrepit, a counter opposite of what it was like in its heyday. If you happen to enjoy the video, a thumbs up would be greatly appreciated to support my work to uncover and film what is left abandoned, and Subscribe for more videos if you please. Have a good day and stay safe.

This explore was a fun one, going to a movie theater has such a nostalgic feeling. Make sure to stay til the end to see the awesome projectors left behind ! Also, When's the last time you went to the movies? and what was the film?

Hi Dark Explorations! The last time I went to a movie theater was either 2004 or 03. There was a widow I worked with at the x.she had every Wend off if I was off we would go to this huge mall in south Florida. We shop eat & then watch a movie.i now live East TN & I no longer work because I'm on disability due to my illness.i want to say the movie we saw we didn't want to but it was the only chose we had was I think the name was boogie man with the guy from Seventh HEAVEN . I remember in the 1980s in my birth state of Vermont there was still drive in theater.my brother would take my sister & me.i remember watching Rambo & Crocodile Dundee. My 1st ever movie in a theater was the movie with the black man singing blue bird on my shoulder. I'm no longer into going into a crowd even before the covid.people are nasty & rude. I walk with a cane & people would push me. I prefer going for rides & exploring new places .as a child I grew up on a dairy farm & my dad would make time to go for rides.we would sometimes pick up my grandfather & go. If we asked where were going he would tell us where the car takes us.sometimes we would find ourselves in NH in some place with nothing but fields & 1 weird place to eat.my dad loved spending time with us & making memories. afterwards before going home( always we had to be home by 4 to take care/milk the cows) we would get ice cream.thank u for helping me remember the good x's. I hope u have a great day as well & stay safe 🙂😊🏚📽🎞🎬

Many popcorn blockbuster movies in 1990-2005 with James Cameron Terminator 2 to Titanic or Batman last 3 or all 4 of 4, Forest Gump, etc (like he mentioned in video where George Lucas' Revenge Of The Sith was summer 2005 Star Wars final Prequels show)!

@Merraine there was a bank in Pasadena (Texas) that was like a landmark for Pasadena. It was a massive building and had beautiful architecture and an incredible interior, a piece of history for us and it’s been abandoned for years and years due to a health concern I forgot what exactly it was I think they used a material to build it that was found out to cause cancer. But anyway many many people wanted it restored because it was definitly doable but ultimately about 2 years ago it was demolished.

That would be awesome to do that, before the place deteriorates too much further! Problem is that thanks to the lockdowns, people have gotten so used to just streaming movies and watching them at home. So who knows if there will ever be as much need for these multiplex cinemas. Tragic but true, at least somewhat.

I used to work as a projectionist, the reason they don’t have little rooms for the projectors would be because movies start within 5 mins of each other and it was very manual before digital projection so you would literally be running from one projector to the next manually starting movies or rewinding movies which has ended! I’ve also used the Christie projector model too! Brings back memories!!

I work as the after hours maintenance guy at a theater built back in the mid 80’s. The problem isn’t so much that it doesn’t get cleaned. Movie theaters are a low margin business and they can be pretty stingy with hours and wages. I only get four hours a night to clean and set up the entire place for the next day all by myself so you really have to rush, and if there’s something broken you have to fix then you’re in an even bigger hurry. Add to that all the people who are really nasty and throw and spill stuff all over the place but also sometimes do insane things like smear human waste on the walls or mirrors in the restrooms and you get an idea of what a challenge it can be. It’s pretty demoralizing trying to accomplish as much as you can in a large area like that in such a short amount of time. I have an assistant that works with me on weekends and you wouldn’t believe the number of them that just quit on me and walk out in the first hour. As far as when theaters are going to reopen, your guess is as good as mine. I’ve been laid off since 19 March and the main reason besides the pandemic that we haven’t reopened is that there is nothing to show. The few new movies that are out there either keep getting their release dates pushed back or the studios just throw up their hands and put them online to stream. At this point I’m not sure we’ll ever reopen again if we don’t do it by this fall.

I used to be a manager at a movie theatre not too different from this one. It had 9 screens and one main lobby/concession area. This brings so much nostalgia back for me. And yes projection 'rooms' are actually just big long hallways, generally. This makes it a lot easier for a projectionist to work and monitor each screen. The main office is where the managers would monitor staff/the lobby through the cameras, count money and open/close out tills. Our theatre had two big safes. We had to balance the $14,000 cash safe every night before leaving. It couldn't be off by even a cent, we had to make sure it was exactly $14,000. On busy nights you'll do lifts from tills so you'll take their cash and leave their floats (about $200) so that they aren't holding onto too much cash. It was a very bustling type of work. There's coin and paper money counters, similar to what banks use. Movie theatres, especially 90s and early 00s still went through a ton of cash so handling a lot of it was part of manager and supervisor jobs. My theatre also used head sets to communicate. So a manager and a supervisor would have one, multiple concession staff would have one, a projectionist would have one. Any time something was needed or something went wrong: You'd hear it on the ear piece. The theatre you walked into that had lights, where you said it's how it is right before showing: those are actually the cleaning lights. House lights/Tivoli lights (The little ones along the floor to guide you during the movie) are what they use for pre-show for people to be seated, and after the show. The concession area will forever be greasy, doesn't matter how often they mop. I had shoes that I called my butter shoes because they forever were greasy. And a pair of dress pants that were also my butter pants. (I often helped in concession when it was busy) The projectors being left is crazy because they look like they're digital so they would be expensive. Although looks like they had swapped from film maybe recently before closing because i see some of the plate stands still there. The theatre I worked at only had 2 digital projectors and otherwise was still using film when I was working there. That was a piece of history that I feel really nostalgic for. There no other type of panic you feel when a plate stops spinning properly. We once had to have a projectionist sit there and manually spin the plate to allow the film continue playing for the rest of the movie. He was a good kid!! I told him we could cancel the film and he said he would just do it. I've never been big on going to the movies (Though I do miss it now because of Covid restrictions) but I loved working at one. The behind the scenes was really fun. I can still remember all the smells. This was such a cool video to stumble onto. Thanks for sharing! It's sad to see it left abandoned and vandalized. Hopefully someone can pick it back up and bring new life into it. I love movie theatres, I hope they never die out.

As a former motion picture projectionist, I will clue you in on a few things. . . The projectors you saw upstairs in the PROJECTION BOOTH were left behind as they were 35mm film systems. The motion picture world has migrated to digital now. The whole movie is now shipped on a hard drive (same as your computer uses) where as a 35mm film would weigh between 200-300 pounds. What you saw upstairs that said CHRISTIE were just the lamp houses (light sources). There were a couple of projectors. Those would have ran about $35,000 per screen to buy the lamp house, projector, lens turret, and lenses. The golden lens you saw was called an anamorphic lens (cinemascope) and compresses the image so a wider picture can be placed in a regular 35 mm film frame. Basically a wider picture. The theatre left all sorts of salvageable that were worth literally tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars behind. The seats, the popcorn machine (32 ounce was about 2-3,000 dollars each, Ice machines, not to mention the neon studio trademarks on the high walls. Those alone were probably $500 to $1,000 or more EACH to purchase. The safe(s) and counting machine in the office . . . All in all a major waste, but in reading the comments, it was clear, there were several problems. Overbearing AC units, Poor seating and worse, Piss poor management and staff that sounds like they were to "busy" to help customers. . That alone is a good reason for people to not bother coming back. All in all one monumental waste of money and effort. Generally a good video, but that abandoned popcorn and gummy bears were not "chill'in" the were rotting. . The lights and some power were left on for security purposes. . .And you couldn't turn the auditorium lights back on as they were controlled by an automation system. . It would have had to cycled through to turn the lights back on unless you found the override switch. . One last thing. Roof hatches are usually alarmed. . don't go on the roof.

They wouldn't be worth anything now since most theaters have all digital projectors but from the looks of the place, they went under far before the mass switch over to digital in the late 2000s so they definitely could've made some money from their ones in decent shape. Also I noticed their film pans are gone which are big metal pans that would sit next to the projectors and distribute/collect the film as it went through the projector. At the very least those could've been sold for scrap.

As a manager of a movie theater that is 1980/1990 retro, I find this totally fascinating. Our theater, while old, has had a lot of upkeep. Right now, our attention is focused on fixing roof leaks- the building is a flat top, and we had a snowstorm that left us with 1.5 feet of snow.. so the weight is giving our poor building some issues. I can see that this building had the same issue in their lobby, with the fallen ceiling tiles! We have those retro emerald green cabinets and counters in our concessions stand, neon lights everywhere, and a patterned carpet that is definitely nostalgic. And, our theater is smaller- smaller lobby, and only 7 auditoriums. :) I'd love to visit here, it seems so cool.

This theater was in my town. I have super fond memories of seeing movies there! The building has since been torn down, and they are building a new ShopRite in its place. there was also a small complex on the same lot that had a pizza shop, bank, toy car racetrack, laundromat, amongst other small shops. I was born in 2001 so I never experienced the "90s aesthetic" in it's peak, but I always loved stepping foot inside this theater and feeling like I was in a time capsule.

kristine elizabeth It’s still in business! It’s apart of the Regal chain of theaters. That company has no interest whatsoever in investing their profits into upgrading their older theaters sadly. So they’re left looking like this one, only still operating. Old equipment, outdated & uncontrollable seats... the whole 9 yards. Lol. The projectors will be the only upgrade you’ll find in the older cinemas.

@@TamJ1 The old theater that I used to frequent during the high school days smelled horribly. Don't get me wrong, those were some nostalgic memories. My first movie at the theaters was Sweet Home Alabama lol. I remembered the place reeked of stale buttery popcorn, soda-stained carpets, squeaky seats and sticky floors. If that movie theater you worked for doesn't want to invest in some upgrades, I can only hope they can survive this pandemic.

Christie, along with Barco, makes big cinema projectors like that one - that big box with the flue on top held the light source, usually a xenon arc lamp that was ridiculously bright and ridiculously hot. They're basically an arc welder running constantly, sending the light through either actual film or some sort of digital device like an LCD panel or micromirror array. This one looks like one of the latter, as I don't see any place to put the film spools.

I went to this movie theatre a lot during the late 90's when it was new, through the 2000's. A few more theatres were built in the area after this one was built, making it seem outdated quite quickly. It was built around the late 90's, but was abandoned only a couple of years ago, around 2018 - not 2006 like the description says. That's why it looks rather clean (for an abandoned building). The town it's in recently approved plans to demolish and build a supermarket in it's place, which probably explains why the blueprints are there.

The projectors definitely should have been taken or auctioned by the company. Those are worth a *ton*. That window you looked it had the piping for it in the ceiling (many made so much heat that they are cooled from outside on the roof). Worked at one for 10 years and the old non digital projectors made so much heat it was insane. Can 100% confirm that was butter/oil on that floor and that NEVER comes off. We mopped, bleached, de-greased that every night and it never leaves that tile. Literally fuses with the tile for eternity. You basically just slid when you worked back there like you were on ice. Insane seeing the exact same popcorn popper my theater had still there. This makes me equal parts nostalgic and sad knowing Covid will probably kill the last theaters.
