In today's episode, we look around an abandoned bromine factory that started the extraction of bromine from sea water in 1953. The bromine was reacted with ethylene to produce di-bro-mo-ethene, a key component of leaded petrol. In the 1990s, the sale of leaded petrol was in decline, so the plant diversified into making other bromine based chemicals. In 2003, the company took the opportunity to open another plant, located in the dead sea, that produced 14,000 parts per million compared to only 65 parts per million in the factory. In 2004 the factory closed its doors leaving over 100 people unemployed. Join us on this explore as we take a look around this old industrial site

They had a massive fire inside the large metal units at the start of the video, roughly 1994. They were called Impellers and had large fans inside to blow the chemicals out of the sea water. I’m from Manchester and worked there for a full year putting scaffolding all around, inside and a temporary roof over these. The job was massive. Such a shame to see it like this now

How was the access and any sign of security? looks like a good area for flying my fpv drones.

It would be a nice place to do some drone shots! No security at all, at least there wasn't when we went. Access is easy, just walk the perimeter 👍

Not my usual preferred viewing, but it was good, why don't they scrap whatever metal they can, and demolish the rest, as its a death trap as well as a blot on the landscape, its obvious that someone will be hurt in that place, the corrosion is also getting into the sea. The school/ laboratory rooms, were measuring the chemicals, and the oven thing was probably a fume cabinet, similar to what we had at school, the H&S seemed to be in place for all eventualities, such a waste, with no one doing the right thing in putting the land back to how it was before that was built.

We thought the same! So much just going to waste... I think that there were some sections that were demolished. Would all that scrap be worth more than the cost to dismantle everything? That might be why it is left. It's a huge waste of space, though, with potential for something in its place. Holiday complex, etc..
