I’ve been in that submarine back when it was open, that had to be at least 15 years ago. It’s in such a horrible state these days... it’s faded to such a rusty cloud grey, a far cry from its original satin black paint job... I’m surprised you went in there man, it’s extremely hazardous to be in there right now... it closed due to a ballast tank rupturing giving it a port list... the thing could have literally sunk with you in it. You are probably one of the last people to board it in it’s Long Beach birth before the army Corps of engineers removes it from The Queens lagoon. It was meant to be removed in May!

I seen it in worse condition fully rusted and barnacles all over it and why is it docked hidden behind the queen mary? It's a goddam eyesore.

I have a souvenir booklet from the times when I toured this sub. Written by John Allbeury. The sub is a Russian Scorpion B-427 Foxtrot-Class Submarine, this particular one was built in 1972 (although they were building Foxtrots as early as 1958) and it served in the Soviet navy until it was decommissioned in 1994. It was bought the following year by an enterprising group of Australian businessmen who had it restored and brought to Long Beach. Here are some specs below: Displacement: 1,952 tons on the surface; or 2,475 tons when submerged. Length: 299 feet, 6 inches. Beam: 24 feet, 7 inches. Draft: 20 feet Construction: 3/8 in. (10mm) outer light hull comprising ballast tanks 7/8 in. (22 mm) QT28 Nickel Steel pressure hull Propulsion: 3 x Kolomna 2D42M diesels engines, 2000 hp each; 3 x electric motors, 2 x 1350 hp, 1 x 2700 hp; 1 x auxiliary motor, 180 hp ; 3 x propeller shafts, 6 bladed propellers. Speed: 16 knots surfaced (‘knots’ are nautical miles per hour), or 15 knots submerged, or 9 knots snorting. Range: 20,000 miles surfaced at 8 knots. 11,000 miles snorting. 380 miles submerged at 2 knots. Limiting Depth: 985 feet (the author has an explaining footnote here which you will have to find a copy of the booklet to know more.) Complement: 12 officers, 10 midshipmen, and 56 seamen. Missiles: None. Torpedo Tubes: 10 x 21 in. (6 bow, 4 stern) Torpedoes: 22 maximum. Foxtrots generally carried Type 53 torpedoes with 880 lbs. (400kg) high explosive warheads. Active/passive homing with a range of 10 miles at up to 45 knots. Low yield nuclear torpedoes were carried up until 1991. An additional 2 noisemaker torpedoes loaded in the aft tubes were also carried. Mines: 36 max. 2 mines could be substituted for each torpedo. However, two noisemaker torpedoes for defense and at least two highly explosive torpedoes for offense were also carried. Guns: None (although Foxtrots were originally designed to incorporate a deck gun, ala WWII boats, none were ever installed). Radar: Surface search: Snoop Tray; I band Sonar: Herkules medium-frequency active/passive. Feniks passive search/attack. Electronic warfare: Stop Light, radar warning. Quad Loop Directional Finder. Anyways, hope this can answer some of your questions.

When they were having tours of the sub, you could hear the fans on to keep the tourists comfortable as they toured, and it gave the impression that the sub itself was humming with life. Also, there was a voice recording of a Russian officer in each watertight room explaining the purpose of that room and what it was used for, and similar trivia. My favorite rooms were always associated with the crew’s pass time, where they ate and slept. It was definitely a highlight of my life, as I never expected that I would get to explore any sub. I had gone with family just to see the Queen, but when I saw the sub, I just had to go. Mom went with me, but she couldn’t finish the tour as she was getting claustrophobic. But I continued through to finish it. I got to visit Long Beach a few more times over the years, and going to see the sub and the Queen were always a highlight of my trip. I’m glad my last trip to Long Beach was before the sub closed, as I would’ve been disappointed if I had gone again and couldn’t see it.

Hopefully you had clearance to board. There’s a reason she’s closed. She’s not ventilated and could very well sink if you sneeze on the right spot. Either way, thanks for the footage. Her next trip is no doubt the scrap yard or it’ll be reefed.

Lemme share with you with some stuff on that boat. It is not exactly spy boat but slow submarine good for patrolling / attack and sadly it cruised at 16+/- knots. Unlike previous submarine of similar class (zulu i think), this sub had an good depth dive where it could sail unnoticed. These subs were hanging heavy near cuba during the cuban crisis. That orange screen at 7:18 is a sonar but it could have been used only during the time when the sub was at periscope depth. so the room next to it must have been part of sonar section. It is not communications hub. Ugh I dont want ot be wrong here but i am going to throw 2 scenarios. Either above your head is periscope area or it is an escape hatch. I doubt it is escape hatch though. almost exact copy sitting in Kalingrad B-413.

Suggestion... read up on the place before going inside? I'm sure you're aware that a lot of the piping in these older ships is insulated with asbestos. Areas that were off limits had no expectation of being safe.

dude it is a soviet Foxtrot submarine - 1st and 7th sections are torpedo sections 4:09 you are in 5 section engine 6th sector next to the engine one is electrical. B-xxx were crossing oceans that is why they are bigger since they patrol oceans. This one was sailing from Vladivostok (pacific fleet). There is another B Foxtrot sub in san diego B39. You might want to get there soon because it is going to be scrapped for metal in Mexico. I don't believe we have any Soviet B-xxx Foxtrots anywhere in the museums however there is U Foxtrott in England is getting restored. This is a smaller submarine because it sailed in the sea.

Someone, please, save the Scorpion along with the Queen Mary! Both are amazing parts of history and shouldn’t be left to rot. I toured the sub back when it was open before going on the Queen. The lives that those Soviet crewmen went through was a far cry from the luxury of the Queen Mary passengers, but that was part of what made it so interesting to me. A world of such stark contrasts. The Scorpion has been restored before, there’s no reason why it can’t be restored again. If the owners are having money problems, they should sell her to someone who can do the restoration. Even if the Scorpion has to return to Russia to be restored and placed in a museum, it is better than just abandoning it.

It's not abandon, it has been permanently closed to open tours cuz of it's major lack of maintenance which is due largely impart by finances. It has been moored next to the Queen Mary in Long Beach, Ca. for 2 decades. It was recently purchased by an unknown buyer for a undisclosed amount. Soon it will be removed to where I can't even say. Hope this helps clear up any unanswered questions. To the poster of this video. Be very careful you don't get yourself arrested by the L.B. Police, they are nothing nice!

I haven’t heard anything in a while. They are trying to remove it. Long Beach is tired of looking at it as it decomposes next to the QM. Problem is, they can’t seem to contact the owners. The owners are a different company from QM’s owners, they went bankrupt and have probably abandoned it completely. If I remember right, one of the sub’s ballast tanks sprung a leak and they no longer had the money to repair it. (Probably where you saw that rust dripping from). There is some talk about having it removed anyways, although it would be hard because it’s in a reef near the front of the Queen’s berth. I think it was first put in there back around 2006. I wonder if they have tried getting in touch with any of the original group that brought it over for technical advice about how to safely get it out of there.

As a former US submarine sailor back during the later part of the Cold War, except for very few classes of the former USSR's submarines, most of their boats were absolute junk. Deathtraps. Compared to their pieces of sh!t, our nuclear boats (which since the 1960's accounts for all but three of our boats) were (and still are) much better and we basically lived in the lap of luxury in comparison to them.
