Originally published as an exclusive for my Patreon community (Patreon.com/BritishHistory) this is a 'live walkaround' of a place called Deerhurst which, incredibly, has TWO surviving Saxon Chapels.
St Mary's first appears in records in the early 800's but could have been established in the 700's. It was the priory church of Deerhurst Priory with some incredible surviving features from its early history.
Odda's Chapel was forgotten about for centuries, absorbed into a house built in Tudor times and rediscovered in the 19th century!
We take a look inside both, sited within a few hundred meters of each other!

This was recorded back before I could afford a roving mic but the support of viewers of my channel and members of my Patreon means I now have great mics and am less at the will of the weather! So, please be patient during this video when the wind noise is up temporarily.

Thanks for making this a long one! It's so nice to have time to see everything, sometimes twice to really get a look. The narration is fabulous too. It feels like we're exploring with you. Great sense of immediacy. I know it's more work, but please try to do longer vids whenever you can❤

Thank you for the live tour of these fascinating places, Philippa. Even through the video, I could feel the importance and beauty of the buildings. And that font! What a treasure to be re-found and replaced in its original home. ⛪

I’m in Florida USA (Winnebago territory, the motor vehicle not the Native American tribe). Thank you for posting this so I can see wonderful places where I cannot travel.

The Latin plaque translates as Earl Odda ordered this royal chapel to be built and dedicated in honour of the Holy Trinity for the good of the soul of his brother Aelfric who died in this place. Bishop Ealdred dedicated it on April 12th in the fourteenth year of the reign of Edward, King of the English."

How sad that religious iconoclasm has robbed the UK of so many beautiful Anglo Saxon and Medieval marvels of art and architecture! The baptismal font is exquisite. I can’t imagine someone using it as a feed bin or a water container for livestock. That’s what fanaticism does to the soul-it robs the soul of the ability to recognize and appreciate beauty in all its forms whether manmade or in nature.
