The Department of Psychology recently held a career event for our undergraduate students. Exploring Careers in Clinical and Counselling Psychology involved a panel of experts considering questions such as: How can a degree help you to prepare for a career in psychological services or related areas? What resources and supports are available? What can you be doing now to gain experience? During the session, students had the opportunity to hear stories, receive suggestions, and ask questions from the following professionals:
Manal Guirguis-Younger
Professor in the School of Counselling, Psychotherapy and Spirituality, Saint Paul University
Ian Manion
Executive Director, Ontario Centre of Excellence for Child and Mental Health
Annmarie Nicholson
Director, Volunteer Services, Royal Ottawa Hospital
Alia Offman
Private Practice; Instructor & Adjunct Research Professor, Carleton University
Holly Peters
Employment Advisor, Co-op and Career Services, Carleton University

Im going through tones of confusion, questioning whether im on the right path with my masters degree and watching this really helped me the F**k calm down and realise that i dont necessarily have to "go all the way" (even though that was my initial plan going into my current masters degree). Psychology programmes get tougher to get into with each stage and this video showed me that i just need to chill, keep exploring my options and my stars will surely align, there is no way that all these years of studying could go to waste. THANK YOU for sharing

This is absolutely amazing, so inspirational and I wish I had seen this earlier in my university career. I am all of a sudden motivated to study! Thank you, I really needed this!

I always feel there is so much ambiguity in this career, which makes it so difficult to actually become a clinical psychologist. Whereas if you go into psychiatry it is much more direct, albeit longer.

Only 30 minutes in, but this video is probably a good example of survivor bias. These people are probably extremely driven, intelligent, and lucky - three qualities most people are probably not. As a psychology major in the science program (not arts) I see a lot of interest by younger people and subsequently a high degree reassessment rate (people dropping this major). Graduate programs in the science fields are extremely competitive and notoriously difficult to "go all the way." Beware, there are far more people that do not make it than do.
