Exploring Chernobyl Diaries

Another entry in my "Exploring" series. This time around I take a deeper look into the Chernobyl disaster and how it influenced the horror film Chernobyl Diaries. This episode is one of the more serious ones I've done since I just couldn't bring myself to add any comedy. The Chernobyl disaster was one of the things that changed my perspective on the world so it only felt right to do this one seriously.

I liked this movie till the last act too. The characters and atmosphere was pretty awesome - plus I love the setting. I play a lot of Fallout and Metro 2033 - so the film wasn't a major disappointment for me.
@warman13x

That's more or less how I felt too. I remember seeing this movie when it came out and thinking it was absolutely fantastic. And then the third act was just "meh." I didn't hate the movie by any means. It was incredibly creative and legitimately unnerving for a good portion of the movie. While the last act was disappointing, I don't think that should discount what came before it. And by no means was it the worst film of 2012. I'm not really sure why this movie got so much hate, but it's nice to see it get a little praise here.

I fully admit that it had a great set up but terrible execution at the end, the girl gets rescued at the end by what appears to be some shadow arm of the government and then gets placed in a room with some of the mutants, that could have been done better to be honest with you, a better ending would have been if she had been rescued but instead they leave her in a cell and watch as she slowly succumbs to radiation sickness and possible mutation, plus we didn't really get to see any of the mutants or whatever they were and while thats great for a little while keeping the mystery of what they look like eventually you just want to see the money shot, also they brought in some interesting aspects like the little girl who appears and then disappears that actually could have been great had they followed with it more are the monsters real or are they suffering from radiation sickness and are slowly loosing their minds. The problem with this movie is that it had wasted potential.
@WobblesandBean
@WobblesandBean 9 лет назад
+dannytheman1313 Exactly. It's been a while, but I don't recall them ever really going anywhere with that little girl, other than just abusing the "creepy small child" trope. I like the notion that it was up in their air whether or not they were imagining any of those attacks due to their deteriorating, irradiated mental state, but then that ending comes and removes all doubt.

Amelia Bee I know it gets done too often in hollywood but this movie deserves some kind of reboot or remake all the elements are there for a good movie, great atmosphere, interesting ideas, and a few good characters, I think there is potential for a good movie in here perhaps in better hands.

How's this for an ending: Amanda is left alone in a hospital room. The government official says they need to question "the patient" immediately. The doctor says she's in no shape to be answering questions; they respond, "I don't care. Wake her up." A nurse goes to check up on her, and finds that Amanda is missing. Hospital security goes from room to room, eventually finding her hiding in an empty patient room. She's cowering in a corner, faced away from them. Security tries to coax her to get up and come with them. Amanda turns to face them...and we see that she's mutated into another zombie. She begins tearing the security guards (and the soldiers) to pieces as the movie ends.

GoodBadFlicks Let's get this clear, there is no diaries, this is not a found footage film. 0:18 Four hundred times more radiation was released from that reactor meltdown than when Hiroshima was nuked! While this is an excellent horror film, the monsters here are not ghosts, they aren't zombies, they are throwbacks to the Atomic-Bomb-Mutation B-movies of the 1950's. 7:35 The $1,000,000+ it cost to make movie may not include post production costs and doesn't include the marketing costs!

The radiation levels aren't that high outside of reacter 4 that there isn't wildlife. In fact some people actually live in the 30 kilometer exclusion zone around the plant. Granted, mainly old people who don't care about anything, but still. People live there. And another thing they forgot about in the film is the workers decommisioning the plant. There are still plenty of people milling around, especially near the reactor. And the reactor is pretty well sealed off and the perimeter is secured. So they would have have major difficulty breaking through to the reactor. But, like you said, it's a work of fiction, so I'll let them have it.

Regarding complains: Cellphones - you can in fact get reception in Pripyat. Unlike US, Europe has 99% cell phone coverage. Us is actually a third world country when it comes to phones and internet. Pushstarting a car - it probably would have worked with the van in the movie. most modern cars cannot be pushstarted though. you would just choke the engine if you try. The other complaints are of course nonsense.
@StrazdasLT
@StrazdasLT 8 лет назад
***** absolute nonsense. There is a service called Roaming that allows you to use other countries mobile network, at extra cost. US cell phones most definatelly DO work in europe. Also everyone who buys a locked down phone and isnt living in the 90s is a honest to god moron. But yes, because unlike in europe, in US you have aboslutely no customer protection, the rates are exortbitory.
@sharonflowers66
@sharonflowers66 7 лет назад
Strazdas it's hard to imagine pripyat would have cellular phone coverage. Chernobyl happened in 1986, before cell phones were even a thing. It's possible they put towers up for the reason of tourism, research and the construction of the dome they're building to encase the reactor. but its also likely that radiation would destroy the phones after prolonged exposure.
@asasial1977
@asasial1977 7 лет назад
you do realize that the plant continued to used and created power until around 2000 and that they have been working on a new enclosure for the damaged reactor. the plant was never abandoned there are still people there working on it til this day.

@@MegaCrocosaurus92 Damn what a quick answer. I actually agree with the first argument. The third one is taste depended I would say, without going into it too much. The second argument actually might have some truth to it, but that it something, which you probably have to accept during the movie, to be able to not get disstracted by it. Think of it like this, how would it be less contrived? And would this change be really worth the entire resequencing of the movie. But have fun watching the movie :) If you like movies like that, maybe "The Divivde would be a recommendation, it plays in a radioactive post nuclear war set in a bunker".

+Alex Pana The complaint about Chernobyl Diaries isn't just that it's about Chernobyl. It's that the victims are portrayed as villains. ninjaf00t Eh, I can't exactly see that. The movie barely explains anything about the mutants, so we can't be sure when exactly they first became mutated. That's really the only scene I remember, and one where two of the kids are forced to kill another kid who's only just as frightened. For an immigrant myself it also made me question whether this was how all Americans secretly feeled about foreighners, especially Mexican ones due to the shit going on at the time I watched it. I didn't even see the remake but most of my friends said it was a waste of Time. Youth doesnt always mean ignorance, just like adulthood doesnt always mean slow creeping mediocrity.

Red Dawn remake is just a cash grab movie like more than 80% of the movies done in this 21th Century . Also how poor the movie was and the lazy CGI-effects the ending was?was there an ending at all it stopped . Also again showing us American propaganda which gets on my nerves lately , for Americans it was once Germans the bad guys then the Russians, then the Arabs or Muslims now they have tried North Korea as being bad guys in movies .....wonders when will Americans make a movie that Americans are the bad guys ? Also the biggest joke is showing us young kids with guns and all that jazz having faith and what not , if we see how young generations are in real life they wouldn't even know how to fight, have the courage and so on . Anyway Red Dawn the original is a true classic and had a real meaning "The Cold War" that really happened and wasn't fictionnal like that shit remake . Also the actors acted much better in the original Patrick Swayze, Charlie Sheen, ... some scenes were disturbing . The remake was just a disgrace a joke again to dish our childhood years . I'm 40 and can say they are ruining alot movies, franchises and sagas now which makes it extremely hard to watch something from this 21th Century kinda nothing hooks me anymore alot complain about clichés well for me all is deja-vu a million times .
@CorbCorbin
@CorbCorbin 6 лет назад
defiraphi I'm the same age. Red Dawn was a dumb film to try to remake. At that time, most experts would tell you that an attack like in the film would result in the U.S. losing quite a few states. It also would end in the stalemate that's in the movie. It was a very well done approximation, of what an invasion would look like. The scene with the teacher, and then the one kid hanging out the window of the classroom, shot in the head, was very unsettling. It also showed what insurgents, in a mountainous wilderness, could actually do. It was also was PG-13, which made it more accessible for kids to see. After seeing the film, my friends and I, would go to our local Sportsman/Hunting and Fishing store, and choose supplies we would need when we got invaded. It became something to do for fun. It was very impactful on our young minds. I really loved the performance by the Cuban leader, especially after he realized it was teenagers getting the better of his soldiers. Then his recounting of other countries they had taken along the way, yet he was looking at the bodies of his men, instead of the native insurgents. It was powerful stuff. I was 7 or 8 years old, yet I still felt the difference between Red Dawn, and a First Blood 2, or similar one man Army movie.

When I saw this film in theaters, I was very impressed with the cinematography. It added such a degree of dread in the daytime scenes. It's too bad the film didn't do better, since it showed the filmmakers have good potential.

I finally got around to watching the film last night. I enjoyed it and found it very effective and creepy. I'm not a big fan of "found footage" movies. The only other one I can say I liked was Cloverfield. Chernobyl Diaries is not strictly that which was nice to see. I won't deny in a couple of scenes. I had my hand up to my face to cover my eyes. I haven't reacted to a horror/thriller film like that in a long time. There was some very intense moments. The twist of who is there really disturbed me. A lot what if conversations would come from that. Thanks for the review.

9:11 That's funny because I bought a cheap Wal-Mart DVD pack that had Wrong Turn and the The Hills Have Eyes remake. Both came out in the same year and have basically the same plot. I suspect Wrong Turn was a cash in on The Hills Have Eyes, created to trick people into seeing it like The Asylum does.

That is INCREDIBLE. Seriously... I've been on a tour to Chernobyl/Pripyat and when I watched this movie, there wasn't an ounce of doubt that this movie was filmed, at least in part, on site.

What I mean is that it wasn't a lot of static shots. It was done more to follow the cast. Now, not like a FF movie, where there is someone holding the camera, running, etc. Like WMAI below this says, FF treats the camera like a character, since it in the film is someone holding the camera. In this, it is still an "invisible" crew that is capturing the event.

STALKER has ties to Roadside picnic but much of the content is stuff unrelated to the book. Both are good in their own ways. I'm not sure why it was so disliked by the critics. Sometimes it almost seems like they all just decide that one movie will get their hate if it deserves it or not.

I think there should have been more of the government conspiracy hinted in the movie. Yes the movie at times was lame but it still had the tension most low budget films tend to lack.
@Scarecrow2596

Raymond St Paul it was hinted in the beginning when the guards didn't want them to enter, the area was on lockdown because the mutants were roaming free, from what Juri said and the government lab in the end I'd say the normaly have them under control, so the public doesn't know what really happened

Raymond St Paul my guess is the mutants were residents of the city who became mutated after the disaster and the Ukrainian government is studying them to learn more about the effects of radiation on humans and the reason for the cover up is that the Chernobyl tours bring in quite a bit of green for the economy

I would LOVE a real STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl movie but I don't see that happening. I know there was the one from the 70s but that wasn't so much the STALKER from the game, that was from the Roadside Picnic book. Still and interesting watch but man what I wouldn't give for a movie like the games.

Since you liked paranormal activity I think you would like grave encounters. There is a back story about it because it originally was a real show that for some reason got cancelled (rumours of the cast going missing) just before the final episode of the first season which became the movie more then a decade later. It even used the same cast as the original show, who appeared in the movie the same age as the original show.

MissPandoraC The first grave encounters was an honestly interesting movie with a lot of potential, although I may or may not have personally started thinking about how it could have easily been a first encounter report of an SCP which brought my interest level up a lot while watching the movie. Overall a really well made horror story that seemed like it was made by folks who had spent a lot of time around the foundation. The sequels though while from a purely cinematic standpoint were almost perfect in how they took the original story, expanded them, brought about a conclusion and still kept a slightly opened ended conclusion to the series were basically adequate they were however from a moviegoers standpoint severely disappointing.

If there was no rape then Chernobyl Diaries is far better than Hills have eyes. I watched that the hills have eyes (original) and skim trough the remake (to see if they toned up or down the violence) and hated it for the sadism. Same with last house on the left, but in a lesser degree, cuz the sadism does not take such a big part and has a cathartic plot. I really dont like movies that uses rape as an entertainment/shock effect. Violence I am fine with, but rape and degradation (i.e like The Human centipede) I hate. Also I did not know there was a norwegian actress in this movie. Perhaps I should watch it just for that.
@AndyAce83
@AndyAce83 7 лет назад
Violence and sexual violence have different effects on me as it is differently portrayed in movies. Also rape to me is worse than violence because it degrades the person as well. I dont know why, but rape always feels more real to me in movies than violence. I react more strongly to it. Like being kicked in the balls.

I didn't realise people were claiming the film was unrealistic for having animals in it. The Chernobyl Exclusion Zone is now the world's largest nature reserve with many species that were becoming endangered thriving due to the lack of humans. At the same time I don't think going to Pripyat or the Chernobyl reactor is extreme tourism - 2 days in the area is about the same radiation you would receive during a flight from the UK to Japan (something I've done many times)

The reason I don't like this? It wasn't scary. That's all there is to it. It had good ideas and a great background to explore those ideas, but it just didn't live up to expectations. Putting mutated people in was a mistake. If there were, say, the tortured souls of those who died; take Amiriyah as an example. Can you just imagine the horror of seeing the shades of the burnt-out shadows of those victims come to life, perpetually living out their last agonizing moments? I honestly think that would have been better than just shoving in mindless mutants a la The Descent. The ending was weak as hell, too.

Honestly the movie is fine...until the ending. The whole "evil government cover up" shit was just so lame. I'd rather they pulled a Blair Witch and just have all the characters killed at the site without being "saved" only for the remaining survivor to be killed by the corrupt officials....of course played by the ageless Udo Kier (I'm pretty sure he is a real vampire as he has looked the exact same for almost 40 years of film). The biggest plus to this movie, after I saw it, I replayed through all 3 S.T.A.L.K.E.R games, such a badass series!

I'm a Ukrainian. It's a very interesting and frightening tour if you dare to go the abandoned territory of Chernobyl. And it's relatively cheap now. Like 50-100$ per person, depending on the guide you hire and the route you go. And it's official for a long time already... Like for years now. All that twist with forbidden passing was, i guess cause of the ending, like the movie soldiers knew about the movie danger and that's why it was restricted that day. And yes, there are animals in Chernobyl and even Pripyat itself. And the guards... Yeah! 😂 the most they would do is grab some cash from these forigners and left them there to take more pictures... Just wouldn't give a shit. At least back then, when the movie was made... They've become more men of duty nowadays.
