Oh yes, can't wait for Part 4. That little island has so much history hidden in those barrack foundations, and bunkers. And that man made cave, amazing amount of work, it must have been for critical storage, munitions or fuel or food. Amazing. And the barrack areas, would have had buildings for kitchens, toilets and showers, store rooms, and who knows what else. Seriously would love to find the unit history or original plans for that area. Such fascinating history. Thanks again for another terrific video! Cheers and best of health to you all!

What ever they were protecting must have really been important to have so many bunkers and gun placements. Maybe you can explore what they were protecting one day. The large tunnel may have been ammunition storage and shelter for the troops. So many barracks. Is the like a national park and do take a ferry to get there? So much to see.

The size of this island, the number of features and the amount of soldiers that had to man these positions, it must have been crowded on this island. When thinking about the tunnel system you went in, I thought maybe it was used for ammo storage but with as damp and cold as it was in there, wouldn’t that effect the powder in the ammunition? I wonder if the foundation you showed with the two chimneys was a mess hall instead of a barrack. This place is crazy. Every direction you turn there is something else.

Is this Texel island? if it is, I know the bomber crews gave it a wide berth because of the heavy flak installations.

The cinderblock door way in the dug out tunnel 12:05 is the other side of the cinderblock door way in the room 17:04. Just guessing. 👍

No. None of these fortifications were a good place to be. In searching this morning for the island, I ran across a photo of the fortress at Cherbourg, France, showing several German soldiers dead in a tunnel far below ground level. The caption stated that the strengthened concrete was yards thick, but not thick enough to protect against the concussion of the bomb blast. There were battleships and heavy cruisers pummeling the fortress. Aside from that, there was a real risk of being shot when surrendering.

This would be a far better place than many other around Europe Martin. Some soldiers would even say it was one of the best to stay at. Thanks and more to come soon :)

That island is crazy! Why did they fortify it so much? Is it that strategically important? Is it unique, or are there other islands like it?
