Gas Giants are the largest and most extreme type of planet, from their unbelievably pressurised cores to their beautiful outer atmospheres. In the Solar System, there are four; Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus & Neptune. In this episode of #OOTW, we will explore not only these worlds, but also gas giants beyond the Solar System elsewhere in the galaxy.

It would be amazing to see inside the atmosphere of the gas giant's.
@Quello_Fico
@Quello_Fico 3 года назад
I think it would be a quite frightening view. It would start with a dense, thick, stormy mist that would surround you from everywhere. By going more in depth, the thick atmosphere above you would block the light from the Sun, and the only source of light would come from enormous lightnings that would reveal massive cloud formations all around. Continuing further, you would start diving into a deep ocean of metallic Hydrogen, until you would eventually reach the core of the planet. I suggest you to go see V101 Science channel, there are very good videos that treats exactly this argument.

@MuscarV2
@MuscarV2 3 года назад
You didn't think about that at all before writing that comment, I hope. Because you'll not see anything, it's gas, all the way down to the point where it gets supercritical, then liquid. You'll just see only the color of the gas you're in near the surface, then further down where the light can't reach it's just complete darkness. So put on a VR headset and just play a video that's just the color of the planet that fades to black, and there you see how it would look. I don't get how you imagined it would be.
@warlord1114
@warlord1114 3 года назад
@@MuscarV2 I don't think you thought about your comment before posting it. You would be ripped apart by the immense gravity, and wind speeds long before you reach the point where super critical gases are. And you're acting like we don't have a way to make our own light sources.

Interesting to me how Johann Galle named the planet "Neptune" back in 1846, long before it was viewable in any great detail.. In Roman mythology, Neptune was the god of the sea; said to create fierce storms and strong winds on the seas whenever he was angered. Also, I thought hydrogen would combust or deteriorate in extreme heat, not become a liquid ocean 72,000,000 feet deep...

As a kid, I used to think the gas giants were the boring ones compared to the terrestrial planets, with only Jupiter having some texture, and Saturn having its iconic ring system. As I got older, I was fascinated with the number of moons that gas giants have, and later the thick composition of its atmosphere (which isn't really all gaseous). With that exrasolar gas giant with the huge ring system though, I'm surprised they don't turn into planets. I'm wondering how the planet was able to hold it so far away.

I remember as a small child, learning that Saturn would float on a body of water that’s large enough. I went on the 80’s version of a Google search, getting a phone book (remember those) and attempting to call all the public pools and high schools in Monterey County, asking if their pools were big enough. Didn’t get far enough to figure out just HOW I was going to get Saturn to come down for a visit and a swim…….😢😅

I honestly enjoy your content more than PBS. Not saying you're "better", but given the choice your channel is my first click. I love the way you make me feel so small...no wait, the way you make the universe so big. Honestly, the other me beyond the veil of this observable universe nailed this comment. I'm going to eject myself into the sun super mario style.
