We drove up the Cherohala Skyway from Tellico Plains, TN, stopping along the way to take in the views from the multiple overlooks. As we crossed the mountain into North Carolina at 5000 ft. elevation, the air and the roads were icy, the sun was setting, and the endless expanse of Southern Appalachia on the horizon was breathtaking. We took a left onto Old Santeetlah Road and then took an immediate left onto North River Road which took us under the Cherohala Skyway and back into Tennessee. We found a campsite on the banks of the North River at dusk. The firewood was wet from recent rain so getting a solid campfire going was a chore. The temperature dropped into the mid 20’s overnight but we slept warm on the ground in a tent. The following morning we coaxed the fire back to life and made some oatmeal. After breaking camp, we headed back up North River Road to the Donley Cabin, taking in the scenery along the way. We forded the river in our new muck boots and headed up the hill to the historic mountain cabin. The Donley Cabin was constructed deep in the high mountains of Southern Appalachia by Jack Donley in 1861. He did not want to be conscripted by the Confederate Army to fight in the civil war so he built this rustic sanctuary as a hideout. There is no electricity, no running water, no cell phone reception, and no shortage of peaceful natural beauty at this incredible off grid location. It is amazing that it still stands undamaged over 160 years after it was built. We took a very close look at the architecture of the structure and went in depth on the history of the property. I have so much reverence for historic places like this and am appreciative for the opportunity to be able to share our experience here with you. As always, thank you so much for watching our video and taking interest in this historic place with us.

I noticed the gutters right off, I think they were so long to allow for a water barrel further from the house but would not damage the house itself. Beautiful home I am in a wheelchair and happy to be able to see such a beautiful piece of history and home life as it truly was. They must have really struggled in winter. Thank you and your son, be safe!

That’s very possible! Folks in those days surely had animals and gardens that needed water. I hope you understand how sincere I am when I say that I’m honored to have been able to bring you along on our adventure and I’m so glad you appreciate this historic architecture as much as we do 💯👍

Would be interesting to compare location of this cabin to Civil War troop movement to see how close Donley and his cabin perhaps ever came to being discovered during the war.

I did the math one time buying firewood by the bundle like that For around nine dollars to eleven or twelve dollars here in vermont equals out to a lot per One cord, which is a 4 foot by 4 foot by 8 foot long. There is in between $811100. Can you imagine making eight hundred dollars off one C o r d of firewood

Yeah, I guess it’s mostly the convenience you’re paying for when you are just grabbing a bundle or two to go camping
