Mahendraparvata made headlines in 2013 when a 'lost city' was discovered using aerial LIDAR data. This breakthrough in 21st-century archaeology led to the revelation of several new sites and a much larger urban settlement than previously known. Hanuman Travel offers the Sacred Mountain Safari to Phnom Kulen, a luxury camping adventure. In a video, the team explores new remote sites on the holy mountain, including the brick temples of Damrei Krab and Thmor Dap and the holy carvings of Poeng Tbal.

This is an ancient Hindu Temple, of South Indian design; you can see the Havan Kund (in green coloured stone) where the firewood would have been burned during prayers on auspicious days.

They need to renovate and restore all of those temples and make it a UNESCO site so that it can be protected. This area have huge tourist potential.

If you read about the history this area, and the effort to find it, it's truly impressive! Phnom Kulen was the blueprint for the Angkor complex, with many of the same features. It was also the last bastion of Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge before their defeat; they still occasionally find unexploded mines! it was also the capitol of King Jayavarman II, who pulled together several principalities and formed the Khmer Empire!

That's a great point! It's truly impressive how much history is packed into this area. The connection between Mahendraparvata and Angkor is fascinating, and the fact that it was the last stronghold of the Khmer Rouge makes it even more significant. Thank you for sharing your insights.

It's amazing how vast the Angkor civilization was. The jungle is also very beautiful.

The script of Angkor was derived from Pallava, with many Sanskrit influences, but still Khmer.
