Today I'm headed for Maldon, a beautiful old mining town in the Victorian Goldfields, where there's something a little different I'd like to show you.
Built in the 1860s this gorgeous stone tunnel runs right through the middle of Maldon, and is a brilliant historical feature of the town.
In this video I meet with Derek Reid, President of the Maldon Museum and Archives Association, who has lots of interesting history to share about Maldon's hidden underground.

Fascinating excellent video Michelle & thanks to Derek for sharing his knowledge about the 1860’s built under-Maldon drain. I learned about on my recent visit to Maldon to research my great grandfather Edward Wagener & family who I discovered was the Maldon Brick Yards owner from 1861 to the 1890’s. And I am so pleased you featured his local red bricks in the culvert of the drain that look in great condition, just like those in the Beehive Chimney & so many other wonderful historic buildings in & around Maldon. And was great to see the 1867 Maldon Panorama that shows the Wagener Brick Kiln & Yard in the foreground. I hope I can see more of the history of Maldon & the Victorian Goldfields in other videos.

Great video. I know that drain but didn’t know it was so extensive under the streets. Been to Maldon many times (live about 30 kms). I’m 57 but my late father used to take me metal detecting in my teens in the early 1980’s in the area (we lived in Melbourne at the time). There used to be a gold mine tunnel tour you could go on (again remember from my youth) called something like the ‘Carmen Tunnel’ on the Newstead side of Maldon.

Carman's Tunnel used to be open when I was a kid, people could drive up to it, when walk along it, past a sharp bend to a huge internal chamber. I recall it being closed off and I think guided tours operated at one stage?

A friend used to have a house in Maldon which had a mine-shaft hidden in his lounge that my daughters ex would venture down and mine with modern lighting which made finding gold so much easier than the candles the children employed had to see by. They've both since past away and never got to know where that home is located.

Great upload indeed hello from l/ridge , no gold here but the same type of history dating from the very late 1800,s and early nineteen hundreds up 2 today , opal mining and like our mining I guess Victoria has only given up a portion of its shiny things., more than likely plenty left me thinks after watching a few of your uploads

👍it be over twenty years since I've seen in there by the looks not much has changed. Back then was contracted to clean up around the old roasting kilns, spraying and removal of any weed/ invasive species, before we did this you couldn't bearly see them from the main street.

Hi Craig, are you talking about the brick roasting kilns? Is there any evidence of them now remaining as I was looking around Tobin St last Jan & asking if there was even a tourist sign that marked & mentioned my ggf’s Wagener Brick Kiln because of its prominence as the source of the good local bricks. I am very interested to pick up any local knowledge of the Wageners.
