Small correction: I said that the Romans considered Thor to be the same as Mars, but it was actually Tyr.

You did a good job on Norse Myth, you are even one of the very few people who actually knows that the Jotunns are not called Giants. For that alone, I love you man. Also, one way to distinquish between the Aesir/Vanir and the Jotnar, is that the Aesir and Vanir are gods of order while the Jotnar was creatures of chaos. Not all of them fit this describtion, as some are revered as gods too, like Aegir and Ran, but at the end, the majority of them are about chaos. This explains Loki's tricks and why he did what he did, as his Jotunn nature was to cause chaos.

This was really a great series and an excellent introduction to Norse mythology. It is impressive that you went into it knowing very little of Norse mythology. Thanks for putting up such a great series!

hi, just wanted to mention, that i really like the way you use you talk. you really know how to use breaks, intonations, tone, and timing when you talk. that makes it very enjoyable to listen to. i have the habit of listening to podcasts or youtube videos when i can't sleep. i spent many hours listening to some very interesting content, unfortunately narrated in a very uncomfortable way, either relentlessly breathles or just very monotonouse with no concept of speech dynamics. so, i'm really glad there's you out there as well!

According to the 9 realm Yggdrasil schematic, Asas, giants, and vans each live in different realms: Asgard, jotunheim, and vanaheim respectively. Each realm is characterized by a different rune that helps understand their nature. Vanaheim is marked by the rune Uruz, the rune of vitality and life force that comes directly from Earth. So vans are essentially the earth gods, gods of the four elements. Understanding runes helps understand the mythology a great deal.

Would you ever considering doing a lore video on the Dark Tower series? Love your stuff man! Keep it coming.

Unfortunately, probably not. That's a series that is kind of personal to me, and I just don't think I could do it.
@macree01

Hey man, Im sorry it took me to respond to this. I totally understand you, the Dark Tower series is something that is incredibly personal to me as well, as is the overall character of Roland, who I have a my avatar set as. The mythos and story of the Dark Tower is one of the most amazing works of art ever created in my opinion. The fact that is sort of this mix between meta physical and straight up high fantasy mixed with post apocalyptic elements always fascinated me. Rolands determination and single mindedness for what he does in his life has always been something Ive related to. We all have our own quest for the Tower that we are on, and for me that meant becoming a professional musician, like my father was. I play on the same horn that he did (my father passed away from cancer in 2011) and renamed it Excalibur, as a nod of the hat to Roland and the Line of Eld. Really, the relationship to ones father is one of the most important tenants of Gunslinger culture, and it always has been to me as well. The relationship I forged with my father is the most impactive and important in my life. My dad was an amazing musician and inspired me to follow his example. Im not sure what your reasons are, but Im sure they are equally valid. I don't know what your schedule is like but if you ever have any time, I would love to chat / skype about your thoughts on the series as I would be incredibly interested to hear them based on the amazing quality of your other videos. Long days and pleasant nights friend, and do not forget the face of your father. Thankee Sai!

Actually there’s other ideas that Loki is Lodurr and Lodurr is said to be Vé meaning Loki and Odin are actually real brothers. In one mention it talks about farbauti striking laufey for being unfaithful to him. So the theory is that Laufey and Odin father mingled together to have Loki. It’s Odin, Loki, and Hoenir which are Odin, Ve(Loki), and Vili(Hoenir) That and jotun are thought to be primordial Gods themselves as they came from Ymir the primordial giant of the void Ginnungagap. Which is why Aesir are mixed with jotun from the start as Buri and Bestla one of the first Aesir and Giants.

I'm not saying the Christian influences aren't there in places, but it's good to remember that Christianity has borrowed (or stolen, however you want to view it) a lot of material from other religions.
@Lupinemancer87
@Lupinemancer87 5 лет назад
Indeed it has. I also blame Christianity for the reason we don't know a whole lot about Norse Myth as they tried to erase all other believes from the world. So they are responsible for us not know a whole lot.
@lillpillper

I like this series a lot. I'm from Sweden myself and I have had periods when I rely read and watched a lot about our pre-christian history. And I think you held up good. But (and I hope my ancestors will forgive me) the Egyptian mythology and the ancient Greek mythology is equally fascinating and interesting, and perhaps even more so. Will you do any of those?

44:50 IIRC Hobbits average ~100 years, a bit longer than men unless you count the Numenoreans. :)
@brosisjk3993
@brosisjk3993 6 лет назад
Exactly, for all we know Bilbo himself lived for 111+ years, so it's quite a bit longer than the average human. Interesting topic.
@fristi61
@fristi61 6 лет назад
Bilbo reached 131 before leaving Middle-Earth with Elrond and Frodo, but that had a lot to do with the ring stalling his aging process. The 2nd oldest hobbit (Old Took) lived to be 130 through natural means (I assume) though. There's a line in the Lord of the Rings books (I'm looking at it right now) that explicitly says Hobbits "reached a hundred as often as not". A bit off topic for this video but, yeah, interesting topic.

The Thor comics at least earlier on didnt do a terrible job adapting Ragnarok. I've even come across characters such as Sigurd. There was an issue recounting the whole "shooting and throwing things at baldor" I might have to go back to some older Thor comics and compare.

What is Surtur's origins?
@awickedtribe
@awickedtribe 5 лет назад
Surtr/Surt/Surtur was an eld-Jotunn, a fire giant (sic) which, like the all Jotunns was an ancient elemental being, think LOTR Balrog. There really isn't much information on Pre-Odin Norse Mythology, especially with the popularity of the Aesir Gods, who the Jotunns predate, and lack of information. This is why Surtr is opposed against Freyr at Ragnarok. Freyr, like his sister Freyja, and possibly Heimdalr, was Vanir, the descendants of Njoror the ancient Sea God (Water Elementals). Surtr and his ilk, like the Titans of Greek Mythos, were created out of the Chaos. Their opposition was the Vanir, more pointedly Tiwas, Old Norse for 'God' (BTW Freyr was O.N. for 'Lord') who was the God of Righteousness and Justice/Law and the Protector of the weak and helpless. There isn't much to go on except that Tiwas was the Ruler of the 'Gods of Law' and at some time was usurped by Odin and the Aesir. Tiwas who is known by the more modern name Tyr, the God of War, represented Order which Surtr opposed, though it's Freyr who faces off with him in the final battle wherein Surtr destroys the world in fire.

Norse AND Greek so-called mythology are really is the same. USE A MINUTE AND YOU WILL SEE. SHOULD BE OBVIOUS. More to but for starter Elohim-Odin. Didn`t understand. We need to stop this undermining of the ancients. It`s the wisdom, the important way to lead life and more that is the essence and important. Don`t mind the tale wich reminds you of fairytales. Stick to knowledge. Way of living is important. They known and knew long ago, something we are all in crisis about. Just stop dumbing down everyone. We have a need to be in respons of the fuckers that destroy and knows no of ways that is good and wise-w.meaning of great and beyond….
