Mjølnir does not mean lightning. It loosely translates to breaker or destroyer. And Jormungandir does not mean "great monster" either. It means earth-circler.

In Norway we still call thunder for "torden" which comes from our name of Thor (Tor) and our thursday is "torsdag" meaning Thor's day

Jack Kirby re-imagined the Norse gods as extra-dimensional beings in like the 70's. I dig his style. But Marvel wasn't in the business of mythology and history, they were making superheroes. It's just an alternate take. Now, if we're talking real world mythology i'd agree that someone using the comics for reference should be slapped in the head.

I wonder how the people of old times even came up with this weird stuff. Did they make up stories from scratch or did they perhaps exaggerate normal peoples actions. Or did perhaps some kind of Alien people live on earth for a bit and their technology and adventures became confused as magic and monsters?... strange stuff indeed.

Humans of age of Myths were about as intelligent as we are now (in terms of evolution and brain size etc.) So imagine you yourself back then trying your best to explain thunder. Like imagine someone who works iron and hears the clank of a hammer against medal and was like " what if that thunder shit just this is the sky". Kinda like the minotaur of Crete shaking the island is a personification of the earth quakes that pluage the island

In Sweden the tradition is that Tor is the middle brother of Oden and Frej and the three "kings mounds" are the burial mounds of the old kings who ruled one after another.

Jormungandr is Thor's cousin, and they are rivals likely since Thor is Odin's strongest son and Jormungandr is Loki's strongest son Loki is Odin's "brother", not actually related but they adopted each other as brothers, likely since they are both half breeds, half Aesir(God) half Jotun, thought we don't really know who Loki's mom is, it's been speculated to be an unknown Aesir Also Loki isn't a name, it's a title, Loki means entangler, a title meant for powerful illusionists and tricksters who entangle you in a web of lies Loki's real name is unknown, which is why people, gods and jotun just call him by his title

From the images I see.. I think that Mjolner was meant to be a sword, but as the blade broke in the forging and the cross guard was indestructible they called it a hammer instead.

Actually "God of Thunder" is a marvel thing. It's also a misconception by many westerners. There is no mention in the Sagas or Eddas about any of the gods or goddess being "of" something. Though Thor is associated with Thunder storms "God of Thunder" would not be accurate. You kinda missed a few things with Loki and the forging of Mjolnir. Like the fact that he was mad at Thor for leaving without him and he cut off Sif's hair because he knew Thor loved it. He went to the dwarfs to originally just get her replacement hair, but arguing with the brothers a slip of the tongue started the bet. It was never his intent to bet them.

I have always loved the story of Thor dressed as a woman. As really the story tells that a man is not a weapon. They are a man when they are willing to do anything to prove their manliness. Thus dress as a woman to gain access inside the enemy's stronghold. All to regain an item...and thus slaughter the enemy from within.

But when I hear thunder and lightning i know the scientific facts behind it, so i cant say it's Thor's hammer. OP is talking about how mesmerising it would be hearing thunder and truly believing it is Thor. Back in old days, imagination and belief were not checked by facts.

That first story was some serious Comedy. I can picture Thor and Loki with a straight face telling Freya to get dressed and married, and Freya having a "Da Fuck?" face and getting progressively madder as they try to convince her using some very sexist arguments. I can picture Thor adamantly refusing to dress up as a bride, and then cutting to him getting dressed as a bride.

I am norwegian, and I belive Mjølner (Tor's hammer) means grinder. As in grinding grains to flour. "Mjøl" in norwegian means flour. And it is not THOR, it's Tor.

I have to say I love my Nordic roots! Today it’s looked at as a racist thing and I hate that! We have such a rich and religious history! I love the stories, the tails of hero’s and villains! Loki’s children and Ragnarok. I can’t help but see the Parallels with what comes after when the surviving gods and 2 humans after a great flood would repopulate the earth. Just saying
