After realising that the working title upgrades to the Garmin GNS530 and GNS430 had brought OBS mode with them, I found a copy of the Garmin documentation online, and taught myself how OBS works. Enjoy!

I really learned something new today. I've never figured out what that OBS mode on the GPS was until now. Guess I'll have to dig in to those Garmin manuals that I printed out some years ago. Your way of presenting the topic, calm, detailed, all the time describing what you are doin, makes you a true Instructor in my eyes. Looking forward to upcoming videos. Many thanks!

Your tutorials are some of the best on RU-vid. And infinitely better than The Guy Who Talks Too Fast (you know who I mean) and The Northern Guy Who Leaves Out Key Steps (you know who I mean too).

Jonathan to me is the best instructor of all things MSFS. I don't know if it's his voice, or calm nature or what, but he beats anyone else out on RU-vid IMHO.

Another use of the OBS is for situational awareness of your runway for landing. When approaching the airport, change to heading mode (or fly manually), then switch to OBS and turn the OBS to the runway heading. That way if you get disoriented or just need a reminder, it's right there on the dial. Won't be as accurate as an ILS or anything, but you could actually let the plane "intercept" the runway radial if you're doing a long straight-in, too.

Really useful. I avoided the G430 and 530 because I thought they were the poorer cousins of the GTN750 but they’re actually pretty good.
@iridiumcaptain
@iridiumcaptain Год назад
It's funny because in my instrument and commercial training, when I used G430s, there was so much instruction about the OBS mode, but the only real use I ever actually had with it was for managing sequencing with missed approaches. But it is a powerful tool, and if/when you need it, it's nice to have.
@jonbeckett
@jonbeckett Год назад
Yep - I can see how it would be great for missed approaches :)

Very well done Jon. What jumped out at me was the visual clarity of the lighting on the panel and the close camera work, as well as engine sound turned down to a low level allowing hearing you without struggling to hear over a too a loud engine. The result is I could clearly see and hear what you were trying to communicate, which was the very interesting interplay between OBS and GPS In these Garmin units. I had no idea. 👍
@jonbeckett
@jonbeckett Год назад
It's new (as far as I'm aware). The interesting thing to me is that the GPS units are now so close to the real thing, you can read the instruction book for the real thing, and apply what you read.
@tomjanzen9278
@tomjanzen9278 Год назад
I'll add my endorsement about all of this, but especially the sound levels. Many of Jon's videos in the past have been hard to follow without captions due to loud engine sound. On the upside, at least he doesn't play music.

OBS mode is also useful for lining up to runways for landing. (Oh you mentioned that in the last few minutes too….)

I was practically yelling "extended runway centreline" at my monitor when he started to wrap the video up - maybe he heard me. It's great for turning onto final for grass strips when all you can make out from 3 miles away is the field.
@jonbeckett
@jonbeckett Год назад
@@otterspocket2826 Hahaha - one of the perils of recording things with no script :) I often forget to do things. I'm amused that nobody noticed I didn't turn the strobes on, or the taxi light off - usually some aviation enthusiast will spend a few minutes raking me over the coals :)
@otterspocket2826
@otterspocket2826 Год назад
@@jonbeckett - One of the perils of doing a running commentary at all I would think, I'd be forgetting all sorts. Since you're a good enough sport to fess up to the stuff you 'got away with', let's talk about the hold pattern - you were so pre-occupied with explaining reciprocal headings that you miscalculated it, only turned 160 degrees, then blamed the wind when you didn't come back on track (I would've blamed that too 😂). Seriously though, it's a good lesson in task saturation. Substitute the running commentary for, say, pulling and scanning an abnormal checklist, and the simple errors start to creep in as you skim over the 'normal' things you think are in the bag.
@jonbeckett
@jonbeckett Год назад
@@otterspocket2826 Absolutely - I noticed the heading idiocy when I watched it back :) It always makes me smile when you see people demonstrate something with the weather turned off :)

I wish I had done my homework before buying the Standard edition of MS, I just assumed that the Cessna 172 in this edition would be the older steam gauge version, instead as you know its the G1000 which I can't stand, I can't see anyone bringing out the steam gauge in the market place or anywhere else so the only way I am going to get the 172 steam gauge version is to spend another £70 or more on the deluxe edition which I think is a bit mean by Microsoft, my fault, should have looked more closely.
@robertraman6307
@robertraman6307 Год назад
Yes I would also like to train in a Cessna and use the older GPS as well as the steam guages, weird that you cannot buy that version.

@jonbeckett
@jonbeckett Год назад
You have to turn the OBS knob on the CDI/HSI to set the route direction. That's why it pays to be in heading mode before pressing OBS - because it will move to north if you've not set the route direction in the CDI.
