I love doing a short trip to Pilot Mountain several times a year. It's a nice drive though the farmlands of the Piedmont NC area. It can get a little crowed on this trail, so I try and go when it's cold, raining or during the week. But if the weekend is all you have then it's certainty worth a weekend trip.
There are several other trails here besides the one I filmed, but this is the most scenic one. There are stairs scattered throughout the knob trail, and I would say at worst it is moderately hard. But if you have any back or knee issues you probably want to avoid this trail.
The mountain is just outside the city of Mount Airy, the famous town that the Andy Griffith show was supposedly filmed in. In reality, the show was filmed in the Desilu Studios in California, a Hollywood studio started by Lucille Ball.
