Me and the girlfriend hired a campervan to travel France, however when we got there, the cancelled on us.
So the trip had to completely change. We decided to book a load of random places to stay, all very last minute, and I had my camera with me and decided to film the process.
This is the results. A little film exploring some unusual, cool and at times remote property in the south west of France.
We ended up getting 3 completely different places, which was nice for contrast. An apartment, a cool tiny house/cabin and an old style French house (which my girlfriend hated).
If you are going to do a trip like this, hire a car. The busses over there are rare and we often ended up getting dropped off miles from the place we were staying and had to walk for miles, making the trip a nice balance of fun and stress.
We stayed in the Dordogne region, having flown into Bordeaux. The places we stayed were Perigueux, Montignac and Riberac.
I hope you enjoy, and maybe I will do more exploration of cool places to stay.

The first property was an absolute gem. The third looks like the ones you see on escape to the country in France style programmes. It would be good if you did some 'odd properties' mixed in with the previous stuff. Although it wasn't what you set out for I hope it was still a nice break!

So pleased I found you; this is fabulous and I'm so glad you didn't get the camper. Life has a way of delivering up these little happy treasures but it takes a bit of confidence to seize the opportunities available. I'm also a little more than jealous 😭We owned a property close to the little village of Montcuq, near the small town of Cahors in the department of the Lot; next department (county) South of the Dordogne. 3.5 acres in total, made up of about an acre of paddock and the rest was oak woodland. We found the house on maps going back to the 1200's! It was just a cow shed back then of course, converted to a house in the 1980's and eventually becoming OUR cow shed in 2005 and we loved it. 16 of the best years of our lives but, unfortunately, due to ill health and finally BREXIT, we were forced to sell in 2021 and, not only say goodbye to our little bit of paradise, but also to our plans for a quiet relaxed retirement in the future. As the Lot Valley isn't all that well known to your average Brit, it's not your typical tourist trap and 20 years ago, when we first discovered the place, it was like going back to the 1950's. Things have changed somewhat over recent years but at least you still don't see too many Brits cluttering up the place, nothing like it is in the Dordogne 🤣 As a result, we had very few English friends out there and of those that we did have, one was actually Welsh! On the up side, our group of French friends are true friends indeed and we hope to keep it that way for the rest of our lives. Despite the, possibly well deserved, reputation of "Brits Abroad", on every visit we made to feel extremely welcome, were greeted with broad smiles, love and affection, and eager helping hands whenever the need arose. In over 20 years of visiting South Western France, we only ever had one confrontation and that was in the "Trésor Public" or local TAX office, while trying to pay our taxes... same stroppy, unhelpful attitude you can come across all over the U.K. I guess? We've now opted for a camper. The 800 mile trip that used to take us 16+ hours is no longer an issue and we're broadening our horizons. Me, the wife and our 3 Jack Russell based family spent a stunning 2 weeks traveling over there in May 23. Visiting places never before thought of and catching up with old friends in the Northern, Central and South Western regions, was a true adventure and we can't wait to get over there again in the New Year. The camper certainly isn't the same as having a place of our own BUT, it's allowing us to maintain our love affair with France, the French, and their food, wine, beer, traditions and even their odd eccentricities, that simply can't be experienced anywhere else in the world. Good luck to the pair of you and here's hoping for many , many happy miles discovering the joys of South West France. If you're interested, I did manage to get some drone footage a few years ago... take a look. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-k7HdZ31B8NU.html and all that for €140k Just shows what a rip off house prices are over here today. I better stop there... this is getting too long and probably very boring but I hope it may spur you both on to do more and please do document it, it's a real treat to see you enjoying life. "Vive la France" as we say in Stoke, cheers, Bloke in Stoke 👍

Loved this! The camper van people let you both down so badly. You made the most of an unexpected situation. You stayed in some charming places in France. You are such a good presenter. - so natural, and you are great at getting local people to talk to you. Please continue with both types of videos - whatever your subject, you make it interesting. - I’ve certainly learnt a lot from your videos of run down areas; living “down south” I am saddened to see there is such a huge divide in the prosperity of most southern towns compared to some northern towns. How and why have these deprived areas been allowed to sink to a point where it would take billions to rebuild? Thank you for opening my eyes. - And for entertaining me with your French travels!

Villefranche-Sur-Mer and Cap D'Ail is absolutely amazing for that. Also walkable from the train stations too (around 5/10 minutes) walkabout and you'll see a random spot where you can swim 😊

Thanks for sharing your holiday in France. I once went to the South East of France (a long time ago and I forget the name of the village) and it was so pretty there with a bubbling brook through it and the B&B couple let me stay with my Chihuahua in their upstairs' bedroom. Nearby was a steep road circling upwards round a mountainous forest. It's unfortunate that they didn't hold their end of the bargain with your reservation of the camper vehicle. :) xo

I watched your video with great interest as I moved from England to the Périgueux area 6 years ago. Sorry to hear about your camper van problem. For sure these things are really annoying when they happen. I recognised all the streets in Périgueux area you covered in this video. I've walked down them countless times! The music kiosk featured at the start of the video was only refurbished 2 years ago. I thought the rental flat you had in Périgueux looked lovely for sure with the wooden beams there. For sure the weather can get very hot in June and 30C in the Dordogne isn't uncommon. It's actually cooler right now in August than it was back then! It's a pity you weren't in Périgueux in early July because a well-known dramatic arts festival called MIMOS takes place there every year in the Old Town. It was the 40th anniversary this year. There are also regular music performances in squares and I was fortunate to see the guitarist Brian May, formerly of Queen, perform a few weeks ago! There are also music concerts and bars set up alongside the river bank (quais) opposite the Hotel Ibis in Périgueux from mid-July to mid-August.

In Périgueux Musée Vesunna (Roman ruins) and the Vintage days in early September are worth a visit too.

Three separate places, three separate experiences. Property 1 seems like a chic "explore a town" kind of apartment. Absolutely charming place, and I do like visiting towns here and there, though I mainly have done that in the UK. This property felt more tailormade to the whole AirBnB experience. Property 2 reminds me of the cottages that the generation over me used to have as a holiday destination. They did not have a lot of money to travel outside Norway, but they had these mountain or seaside cabins that they visited every year. Cabins was comparatively cheap, especially if you built them real primitive-like, often with your own hands. Nowadays many people still have cabins, but they are much more spruced up and exclusive than the cabins of old. Property 3 felt more historically correct. Most of the furniture seemed to be more functional than fancy, the walls were more traditional looking and it seemed like a house that somebody just lived in, and was rented out as an alternative to selling it. I always enjoyed the separate toilet and shower experiences, especially when travelling with others.

You can get baguettes and lays in Tesco! You’ve got to go for the frogs legs and snails to taste the real culture!. That probably worked out cheaper than a van, I’ve driven through Europe, adding fuel and camping fees to the rental price you likely saved a bit. If you do hire a van get one with solar and a shower as then you can use French aires free. Great vid 🫡

Shame about the campervan! It really does open up opportunities when you can drive around. Me and my girlfriend did a similar trip around the south of Italy, driving from Naples, down the Amalfi Coast, across Campagna and Basilicata through to the Adriatic Coast. We stopped at 7 different locations, including Castelmezzano, which is an absolute gem, as well as Matera, which is awe inspiring (a lot of homes and b&bs are built into caves). Would REALLY recommend a trip to that part of Italy, which hosts some amazing and interesting properties. But just like the south of France, a car or van is almost a necessity.

Liked the theme of your film. The France countryside is looking fantastic. Did you take teabags with you? A cup of English breakfast tea is the one thing I cannot live without abroad to start the day.

Aw lovely lady and for you to pay it forward 💗 I remember from doing French at school that you pronounce words such as Montagnac and other 'gn' words as tho the 'g' and 'n' are switched around and the g is soft like a j(y) so its Mon-tan-yak Reckon that wood's cedar most likely I'd take property 2 for the land, place a tiny house on it

OK, I think your channel may be taking a new direction: the Turnip goes global! (as in Benjamin of Bald and Bankrupt) Loved the video, and I agree....glad the camper van bailed. Very good to meet Eleanor, too. Re which place was best? Well, the last one could have been in the British Isles except for the sunny weather. It does have character, however, and that counts for something. Loved the other two.

Sorry, I've got a problem with my computer connection right now. Further down this page I've made comments about Montignac and Ribérac if you're interested in knowing more about these villages. For some reason the post I made is not at the top of the page.

not sure about wild swimming in rivers in france. boats are allowed to pump out their black water into some rivers so maybe they aren't so strict as us on where household sewage goes.
