Unfortunately, Houston is very flat, so the millions of property owners there haven't taken the front door being practically level with the lawn elevation as a sign that flooding is highly likely!

That doesn’t seem logical!? How it is in US exactly I don’t know but here in The Netherlands entering an empty/abandoned house has (had) some grey areas, some things changed a few years ago more so targeted on squatters but urban exploring (cuz that’s what you’re basically doing) touches on many of the same rules/laws. It has to be empty, meaning no furniture is in the house. If carpet or tile/laminate floors are still in does not matter. But is a table with chairs in there, it’s considered occupied and could land you in prison for a year. (Break stuff, breaking in, throw in a window etc that adds up to that year) A bit confusing is this added bylaw; you can’t touch and / or move anything inside, in gardens, garages, yards whatever it is punishable. Say for instance moving a door out of the way for a nicer shot, you’re screwed. Can even be used real petty by arguing you took possession of whatever was moved no matter how brief, that you either stole it or by doing so you technically ‘broke’ in. As mentioned above only if it is accessible without breaking in, climbing in, bust window etc. you get no penalty. However if property owner has asked you to leave, do so, otherwise it does count as breaking and entering. If a gate/fence/wall etc has to be climbed over in order to get in its the same thing as breaking in. Also, garden, backyards, front yards, sheds, barns, garages, cellar, bunker or similar is considered as part of the property and same rules apply. This one I heard but can’t really verify is that when it’s at night what is considered to be the time people have their night rest it will be seen as breaking and entering.
