Small Town America #4 Battle Ground, Washington
Battle Ground is a rural Washington town just outside the Portland/Vancouver metro area. It has low crime, decent schools, and affordable real estate. It is a rural community but it is still big enough to have good size shops and restaurants.

I grew up here, and moved back several years ago, and it’s only not exciting here if you are one of the fundamentalist Christian, alt right, neo nazi/white supremacists/Trump worshipers that are the overwhelming majority of the population. As someone who has never been a part of that group, it gets horrifyingly exciting from time to time. Also, at the Fourth of July, whether we are experiencing a serious drought or not, the entire area turns into an extremely loud fireworks show. As long as you don’t mind not sleeping the whole night, or can sleep like a bear, you are gonna have a hard time. Also, the school’s here are NOT great; most people around here that were educated in the immediate area are little more than illiterate. The land that hasn’t been touched it A+, the people are a D-.

You should see most of eastern Washington and Oregon. Mostly, but not exclusively desert. People are surprised to find out that a significant amount of land in WA is not green and over 100 is not rare in the summer and under 20F is not rare in the winter on the east side.

I lived in Battleground for many years, so I was happy to see this video. My kids went to school there most of their lives. I had an Uncle who owned a large wooded & very secluded property where the Indians had their homes in the mountain, before their disagreement with the fort. There's a sign in front of the Police Dept. that tells the story. There are still arrowheads a ways outside the town area on a property which my uncle lived on & protected out of his respect for the native people. He wouldn't let anyone go dig them up, although he was asked. Including archeology students, as I was told. Since he passed, I don't know what happened to that beautiful property, or the arrowheads. The town also watched Mt. St. Helens erupt, which was scary! I retired to another state that isn't nearly as lush & beautiful as Battle Ground is, but it's sure much cheaper to live in.

The area is blowing up with new residents and commercial industry. The town is the epicenter in southern Washington when it comes to far right extremists, every other house has proud boys flags on it, the senator currently running for southern Washington lives on battleground and his motto is “America first” which sounds good but is the same motto as the silver shirt fascist legion in the 30s/40s. Plus, right off the Main Street of battle ground is a massive warehouse which has about a dozen and a half trump flags coloring the entire building, with even a qanon flag.

Ridgefield, Washougal, Stevenson, White River are all nice sleepy little burgs. The only downside is that you better be independently wealthy, retired or own an internet business because there’s definitely some soft spots in the local economies. But, towns like this lose a lot of their original charm, and the housing costs skyrocket, when they grow so much larger and at such a fast pace. I live just a few minutes South in Brush Prairie, Battle Ground would probably be 5k-10k people bigger if the City Council had not halted all housing development for a few years so the infrastructure, schools etc could catch up. The downtown is exceptionally small for a town of 20k because a lot of people just run into Vancouver or Orchards for stuff, although West of downtown a lot of businesses have popped up with direct link to I-5 now built. Nice thing about Battle Ground is the two big parks just a mile or two from town, Lewisville County Park on the river and Battle Ground Lake state park. I was literally walking distance from town at the old scout camp on the river across from Lewisville Park when I ran into a bear with a attitude a few years ago. Cost of acreage is pretty obscene in the area though thanks to well off Portlanders ( aka former Californians) fleeing the city.

You have to go to Vancouver for anything other than shooting in the woods or drinking in the woods… or go to church at one of dozens and dozens of churches. Most places you have to leave the immediate area to even fish, as Battle Ground lake is crowded and polluted, and most of the river spots are too full of humans to have any success at fishing. There are dozens of better spots. Battle Ground really isn’t great, and gets worse with every new inhabited house that goes up.

Don’t like me here? Send money! Otherwise, you have to deal with me! The more people that donate, the sooner I can get to Europe, and leave the states to people like yourself! Though, this year I have seen so much promising diversity to help make this white bread, bible thumping, racist, homophobic, and trumpublican area a better and less extreme. I am SO GRATEFUL for that. Change is Good.

I’ve been looking into battleground for about a year now because of tax reasons. I can shop in Oregon(no sales tax) and live in Washington (no state income tax). It’s a great spot. Hopefully they have room when I’m ready to make the move in a few years

Perhaps you're unaware that, as a WA native, when you shop in Oregon and go back to WA, you're supposed to pay the sales tax - at least, that's what I've been told.........

This is part of why we moved here to Battle Ground, our home was more expensive than our home in Texas, but our Property tax was cut in half. We cross over the bridge for Costco trips.

Maybe Longview WA as a place for folks who are trying to get out of Portland/Vancouver. I know of some of the issues with it, but now curious on your thoughts as it's been in my consideration list as a bit more out of the way from the Portland/Vancouver area, but decent sized enough that it has some downtown, stores and things to do. But the one major turnoff I know of has me leaning away from there. :) Also, was born in raised in Oregon, and you almost have me wanting to move back. Only thing keeping me away is the income tax. I want to be back around the Salem Oregon area as all my family is there and I miss them. That and I miss a lot of things about Oregon. Currently up in Whatcom County Washington which I very much enjoy and would miss as well for various reasons.

Thank You. I spent many days and night's in Battle Ground with my sister Nancy who lived on Grace St. next to Punks Muffler's. It's a Great little town with a lot of community spirit. Many weekends spent at Battle Ground Lake before they decided to charge an arm and a leg just to swim or fish. It used to be Free. Plenty of Halloween's spent on Main St walking both sides to Trick or Treat with the community. Christmas time gathering to watch the Lighting of the Christmas Tree in front of the Police Station and singing together. The night Glows of the Hot Air Balloons as we all young and old laid on the ground surrounding the Balloons holding hands. Great Times, Good People and Forever Great Memories. Thank You So Much Briggs ! ❤️

But how many weed dispensaries do they have. I know Clarkston WA, has three within three blocks of each other. Do a video on which state and cities have the most weed shops. By weed I mean marijuana of course, not dandelions.
@briangarrow448

Is that your highest priority? You can find weed shops almost everywhere pal. They are like service stations. If you don’t like one, drive a half mile and there will be another.
