This is the only one of JC's new discs I picked up. Best of a bad bunch and doesn't bode well for future releases.

Do you gain much for the front wides
@GeorgeTheaterAtHome
@GeorgeTheaterAtHome 5 месяцев назад
That’s a really good question. I think they increase the quality of the sound experience. They widen the soundstage. So instead of having only the Left and Right mains, the wides widen out the sound stage. The downside is the significant increase in cost. To go from an 11 channel processor to a 13 or 15 channel process is quite a bit. You could sacrifice a couple height channels and replace them with Wides, but I don’t see any value in that.

Out of curiosity what is the angular separation between your bed layers and Atmos? The angle from left surround to left Atmos, left Atmos to right Atmos, etc. I haven’t set mine up yet but it seems really important to get the angles roughly equal and with smaller rooms it seems recommended to leave the bed layers no higher than ear level to maximize separation. Curious before I lay out where I’m going to place all of mine. I’ve been really procrastinating. For the effort of opening up my ceiling and running wires, your last video has me even less motivated haha. Ignorance I bliss. My simple 5.1 sounds great and I’m lazy haha.
@GeorgeTheaterAtHome
@GeorgeTheaterAtHome 5 месяцев назад
I haven’t measured the angle so I’m not sure what it is. Before you cut big holes in your ceiling, check out this video. You can use bookshelf speakers for your Atmos channels. Much easier to install and much better sound. Atmos Guide: Choose the Best Speakers For Your Home Theater Setup ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eNOXzZD5KnA.html

Uhg I ordered mine on Amazon and have been waiting on my copy to arrive. It hasn’t even shipped yet and I can’t seem to find it anywhere. Does anyone know what the deal is? Awesome review BTW!

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. I also ordered mine from Amazon but gave up on them and canceled the orders. Instead I ordered thru Target. You can set up an alert with Target to let you know when they are back in stock. Good luck!

@@GeorgeTheaterAtHome thanks! I’ll have to that! Keep up the good work! You have a great channel. I posted a couple videos months ago, on the fly nothing like what you’re doing… what you’re doing is a lot of work. At some point I’d like to do this too.

Great review. There is a lot of mixed reviews on the video and sound quality, the thing is can we really expect a 30 year old movie to look and sound as good as today's movies on 4k. As you said it's the best it has been and will be, so just enjoy.

Because Cameron had a strop due to our slightly arcane classification rules in the UK we've missed out on a retail release here. I've had to get it imported via a friend of a friend. Been waiting a long time for this to get a release on disc on for Jim to throw his toys out of the pram for such an inconsequential scene! (The rat in fluid.) Looking forward to seeing what it sounds like with my Samsung 5.1.4 soundbar and surrounds setup.

The ban in the UK is unfortunate. But hopefully you get your copy soon. Thanks for watching!

I love Alan Silvestri's score. Was Cameron present during the Atmos mix? God knows he was tied up making the Avatar sequels.

Bubbles: Universal had a horrible missed opportunity in not remixing Jaws 2 in Atmos or at least 5.1. Jaws 2 has a lot of underwater scenes!

question from an Atmos novice: do movies need to be mixed in Atmos to take full advantage of the setup? What if a bluray is set up for something like 5.1 mixing? How is that handled by Atmos? Is it not as good or basically the same?
@GeorgeTheaterAtHome
@GeorgeTheaterAtHome 6 месяцев назад
Excellent question. The short answer is no. Your AVR or processor will have a built-in upmixer that will convert a 5.1, or any non Atmos encoding, into something that will utilize all of the available channels you have. A common upmixer, and the one I personally prefer is, is DTS:Neural X. For example, the Interstellar 4k disc is not encoded with an Atmos track. Instead it has a 5.1 encoded track. But when I watch it I set my processor to use the Neural X upmixer and it works its magic to utilize all 13 of my channels and it sounds fantastic. Interestingly, some people actually prefer to use the upmixer instead of the native Atmos encoding. So even though the movie has an Atmos track, they will still set their AVR or processor to use the upmixer. It all comes down to what sounds best to your ear.

I listened to Poltergeist (1982) on 4K, only remastered in 5.1, through my Denon 3700H receiver's Neural X upmixer on my 7.1.4 speaker system, and it makes full use of the height channels. I don't know how Neural X knows which sounds are to be placed in the heights and which sounds are to be placed in the bed layer, but it does. Thunder, little Carol Anne's voice from the netherworld, swirling, whooshing spectral spirits and Jerry Goldsmith's otherworldly score were all appropriately placed in the heights during the appropriate times--it's phenomenal!

That’s a good idea. I’ll add it to my video queue. Thanks!

the abyss its plastic AI on plastic disc and it doesn't look in anyway film like , that i have seen 3 times 35mm at bournemouth odeon screen 1 , cinerama curve with overhead surrounds ! oh yes overhead surrounds since 1969 for refit that was for 70mm ice station zebra , i heard star wars day one with overhead surrounds , only difference now its discrete the abyss atmos is dreadful , takes few random sounds or music and mixed onto the overhead surrounds is hardly a decent mix , just old movie , not willing spend $millions on proper remix atmos , , took me less than minute to spot it as a fake atmos , as long as it has some overhead and its encoded atmos so the masses know ? its still a fake atmos upmix sorry to say stripping the grain from it doesn't make it film like , just waxy DNR , AI , oh i guess i have to play the dvd which is better for sound ! the 4k atmos is near field mix meaning the bass on it , its far weaker than the dvd , most of bass slam impact is reduced , even the laserdisc is better still , Dolby Stereo as it uses theatrical mix that hasn't been tampered with i won't be touching aliens or true lies as it be just more of the same near field mixes
