Hi, I stumbled along those signal lights only a few days ago and managed to keep going all the way to the bridge at mill lane. I didn’t know much about them so decided to type into RU-vid about the area and came across your video. I got that sense too how strange it felt to see there signals just amongst some woods. Really impressive to see. It was so hard to get some photographs of them they was so overgrown. Incredible finding really. I got to the mill lane bridge and walked on it but wasn’t too sure how strong it felt haha. It is so neglected on top. Thanks for the video

Was appointed to Pinxton Box in January, 1996 as trainee signalman. One of the best parts about the location was handing over a token to the diesel locos working up a steep grade to Bentinck Colliery.. Happy days. I have since learned that the entire box has been dismantled and placed inside Barrow Hill Roundhouse museum and visitor centre, amazing piece of luck.

i like your style, I am from Mansfield and grew up surrounded by all the great Colliery's, being a kid walking back from scouts via the chippy seeing the night shift pit buses thinking about what my future would be, there used to be quite a few sand quarries, but it's good what you do, just finding small clues is quite exciting, i'm watching you Ant in your vids, rooting for you to find a bit of track and a signal pole is like a huge bonus, but this is where we are at, so so so much is completely gone but at the same time so many old trails that i didn't know about, keep up the good work, an old trail around Mansfield is on a par with Joanna Lumley taking a trip up the Nile, yet there is more evidence for the ancient Egyptians than for our incredible industrial past.

Morning Robert, thanks for watching and commenting too 🙂 There is a lot too see if we look hard enough. I recently did the Rufford Colliery Branch again a year after doing it the first time. I noticed a lot I had missed the first time around so much that I made a new video on it. I enjoyed the Bevercotes Colliery Branch, it has a nice mix of terrains and countryside.

Another Fantastic Production I do love hearing about the History of these Disused Coal Branches being as I'm originally from the County of Kent we Have a few ourselves Tilmanstone (the colliery site is now a Salad Packing Factory), Snowdown (still Disused and with Many original Pit Buildings still there (or was Upto a Few years back), Chislet Colliery had it's own Halt on the Main Canterbury to Ramsgate Line which still had the Platforms and Footbridge there again up until Recent and Last But Not Least Betteshanger Colliery which closed in 1989 which many of the Exchange Sidings were still in situ (they were up until around 2010 when I moved away!) There was also a Signal box still extent there too Very Much Burnt out and looking in a very sorry state! I have walked what's left of that and Tilmanstone and went to have a Look around Snowdown but as we approached security approached we asked politely if we could have a Look around we got told that side of fence fine this side No! So we mooched around for a bit but came across nothing

Your disused signal at 13.15 was a set of whit & red marker lights used for shunt moves when loading or unloading trains. 3 whites '11 o'clock to 5 o'clock was draw forward, 1 o'clock to 7 o'clock was set back and white/red/white 9 o'clock to 3 o'clock was stop (it could be the other way round for forwards and backwards, at my depot in London we generally used raidios to talk to the shunter as it was easier). 3 reds was stop in emergency. We had lights like this when i was a driver on Trainload Freight at Acton and we unloaded a lot of stone & quarry products at various locations in London and the south east.

Just come across your channel in the last couple of days and really enjoying your walks. I live just on the other side of Portland Park where you started the last portion of this trip and there are old railways all over the place - there’s a useful information board in the park not far from the crossing which gives you some idea of them.

Brilliant thank you for watching 🙂 I need to go back this way at some point so I'll be sure to look. I believe it's where the source of the Erewash is too
@spyderdryverlee4581
@spyderdryverlee4581 4 года назад
@@TrekkingExploration Hi there. The source of the Erewash is now under the far end of the Aldi car park in Kirkby. We used to catch newts in it. The first few hundred yards were in the open. As Simon says, the valley next to the foot crossing at the beginning of your video was cris- crossed with lines. Two lines ran across two major viaducts. One went to Bentinck station, the other to Kirkby Central. In the easterly direction they converged at South Junction and proceeded to Annesley tunnel, the deeper and longer of Kirkby's two tunnels. Part of the cutting heading toward the West portal is still there. The Mansfield and Pinxton Line was originally horse drawn. Kirkby's "Summit" colliery got it's name from it's proximity to the summit of this line. At the far end of Kings Mill reservoir the original M&P 1817 viaduct over the River Maun still stands. Coincidentally, the original M&P line ran through Kirkby adjacent to the source of the Erewash (Aldi car park) where stood a line of railway cottages that evolved into the Railway pub, itself demolished in 2006. There's tons of railway history in Kirkby and a fair few bits of infrastructure still extant.

@@spyderdryverlee4581 I’ve been trying to find the source of the Erewash for ages. When I’ve looked I’ve just lost it at the back of Portland park where the railway foot bridges are. Always wondered where it started. Is there none of it visible at the back end of Aldi car park? Thanks 😀

Hiya mate, just found your page on RU-vid and I must say it's very interesting too. I myself enjoy walking on old Railway lines in my local area and have a love of Railway's too. So this is a interesting page to be on. Anyway on another note, have you ever walked the old Railway Line from Kilburn Toll Bar to Little Eaton yet? I did it a few years ago and really enjoyed it, there was a lot of old Railway remains dotted about too, but be careful because in parts it's like a jungle!!!!!! Lol 😂 you start the walk at the road junction at Kilburn, on the right hand side there's a bit of the old Denby pottery branch, but doesn't go too far, but then you come back on yourself and cross over the road on the left hand side and start the walk up to Little Eaton. I won't give much away, but it's a lovely walk and you pass Cocksbench old Railway station which is now a private house, then when you arrive at Little Eaton, the old station house is still there too, again a private house. Anyway if you decide to do that walk, I look forward to seeing the footage on RU-vid soon. Yours Sincerely Mike Wood (From Chesterfield)

It’s all down to cost. When I worked for Ashfield Council in mid 2000s along with the County a number of old lines around Stanton Hill, Teversal and Tibshelf / Newton were converted to a network of paths. There was no track left, BR had scrapped it, but there were loads of concrete sleepers in situ, when we did the sums - removal / disposal / crushing it worked out cost effective to donate a load to Butterley (MRB) and I think Crich and possibly one other heritage line, a win win!
