Exploring the GR-1 granular synthesiser 

Fantastic look at granular! This is my first look at granular synthesis, you made it very clear how it functions. As for the GR1, love the interface, the display is so incredible as to what is going on. Granular is now on my list of synths to seriously consider.

Great machine, saw it live and now I’m awaiting it for delivery this year. Drones at my fingertips

New subscriber. I came across your review of the gr-1 and now I’m hooked!

NOW I get to see it. After playing with a couple newer Reason REs that offer similar approaches/engines, I have to say it can generate some seriously cool, atypical stuff in the way of sound. Thanks for sharing Gaz.

Someone asked in the chat about sampling on the GR-1. Yes, it _can_ do it. Via USB. Use a Behringer UCA222 or Sweex sound dongle, Soundblaster Play!3 or even a Focusrite soundcard and you can do live sampling and manipulation.

2023, still the best option out there right? The Nano lemondrop seems cute, but isnt as much hands on I think? I'm in love with this hardware dedicated granular synth!

Takes me back to the nineties with Gareth Whittock getting all excited about granular synthesis. I had a subscription to Granulab back then. Then Steinberg came out with VST plug-ins doing things granular. Interesting to see some hardware dedicated to it though. Re subtractive synthesis. Of course it was the original electronic synthesis. Then it was old hat and noovelties appeared like FM, wave synthesis, sampling etc. Then the cycle came around again and it was all the rage once more. Is it waning yet again ? History is looping. It does that.... ;^)

Ableton live has grain synthesis in its warp modes as well as some max devices and grain delay. For any one interested in experimenting with grain synthesis. Simpler and sampler can also use (warp mode-texture)

Looks fun, along with FM and wave table digital VA synths this would be awesome for cinema pads and soundtracks.

Picked mine up from the Tasty Chips guys last week at Superbooth.. such an incredible machine.. nothing really like it.. such a brilliant and creative instrument. Can't believe you didn't plug in a USB stick with some samples on Gaz!... It's crazy with acapellas

Very interesting to have this in hardware. I guess this can also be a wavetable synth can it? I'm curious what happens if you load in waldorf wavetables.

can you play something, using the fader + swapping samples. kind of beat making with no sequence, juste swapping the fader + switch samples

But why is the sound from the GR-1 granular synthesiser just in the left side in the sound image?

it seems like maybe a max "density" cap that was more inline with the processing capabilities would address the stuttering? who knows. (the dev does! lol)

The buttons don't look fitted to the case properly - there is a thin gap of different widths around them.

nice job Gaz, between you and loopop I'm sold and the GAS is in full effect it's a lot more money than the MicroGranny but it has so many cool features and it's a lot cleaner so it is truly superior - the CV feature are wild I love Borderlands, Samplr, Quanta, Curtis, Tardigrain, and the Apesoft series of granular apps on iPad, but they are harder to customize and completely control compared to this unit. Saving my pennies... Oh, and cool Prisoner reference. :-) One of my favorite series. Looks cool. But that price needs to come WAY down. Falcon has multiple grain streams and costs half as much.

Hi Gaz, Did the clicks sound like the usual granular artefacts or did it feel like the CPU was struggling?

I understand that this is an Arduino board in a nifty piece of hardware. Having said that it filled with V A S T potential...too vast. Need longer lifespan :) !!

Ouch.. this produces way too many pops and clicks for a 850€ machine right? it seems the raspberry pipe inside doesn't take the load for the granular capabilities when pushed some parameters.. Also, MIDI is way too steppy to scroll samples with the granulator.. are OSC controllers supported? what is the ethernet port for? Cheers

This is an interesting synth but in my opinion granular synthesis is still best in the box.

It seems like a lot of money for what you get. It should at least have a microphone in port and be able to to store your own recordings directly. That’s not a lot to ask.
