Hey guys welcome back to my channel! Today we're going to be looking at a channel on TV that i’ve wanted to make a video on for AGES, honestly even before i made a RU-vid channel i’ve wanted to talk about how weird this channel is. For those of you who might not know, TLC is an American television channel that pretty much only airs reality tv shows and really popularized a lot of current show concepts we see today like the big ~family reality show~ genre with series like 19 Kids and Counting and Jon and Kate Plus 8. I’d honestly go as far as to say they probably played a strong role in inspiring RU-vid’s family channel genre as well. Though today, they’re most well known for their 90 Day Fiancé series and its... numerous amount of spinoffs lol.
I’m not kidding when I say there is NO shortage of weird content on the channel considering they seem to be stuck in a cycle of trying to out-weird themselves every time they come out with a new show concept because they’re famous for being chaotic…. jake paul tease. SO I thought today we could look at the past, present and future of TLC, I don’t check up on the channel very often so this video was a nice opportunity to reacquaint myself with the channel as there were (albeit VERY few) some shows I used to watch and enjoy from them as a kid! I’d definitely say that while I thought as a kid the shows on the channel could get a bit weird at points, TLC has definitely gotten a LOT weirder in recent years.
So hopefully you guys enjoy the video, if you watched TLC growing up I’d love to know if you felt the same way about some of the shows i mentioned or if there were any i missed that you liked or hated with as much passion as my 10-year-old self had for hating jim bob.

Fun fact about Cake Boss, it was my first introduction to anything gay. They made a cake for a gay wedding, and I watched that episode with my mom when I was like six or seven, and even though my (very religious) mom made sure to tell me how “wrong” it was, I didn’t see why, because it was presented so normally in that episode. So like, thanks for that Cake Boss

Oddly enough, Say Yes to the Dress was the same thing for me. I think it was right when same-sex marraige was legalized in New York, and there were two brides that planned to be like the first ones to get married the day it was instated? Something along those lines. (I didn't think anything of it at the time. Figured out why about three years ago.)

I watched earlier versions of the show (it started at 17 Kids and Counting in 2008), i believe before Josh did any of the abuse, but still got that slightly-off vibe from Jim Bob and Michelle. I was raised with similar religious beliefs (but not so many siblings) and there are lots of ppl with that vacant look in the eyes because you have to suppress so much of yourself to be a Good Christian.

Yes!!! Breaking Amish and it’s other spin offs was such a wild and also very interesting time for TLC. It sort of lead me to start looking into the Amish and finding out that they weren’t just sweet people living like the olden times and that there were lots of pretty insidious things about the communities involving abuse and the hiding of it

“What not to wear” and “say yes to the dress” were some of my fave shows on tlc when I was younger. I didn’t care about any of the family shows, I just liked seeing people discuss fashion. Even though, I’m not fashionable at all myself haha Edit: I also really liked four weddings!

Say yes to the dress is a very surprising show bc the more you watch it the more you’re realise how nice it is. Each episode and crew focuses on making the brides look and feel as beautiful and happy as they can be. It’s a super body positive show, and even when the dresses are tacky you never get disdain from the crew. Their only focus is to have a happy bride. So you often see them hyping them up and such. It ends up being a surprisingly feel good show. I suppose that’s why it’s so popular.

Yes, Say Yes to the Dress is suprisingly nice. I know that's their job, but I love how they try to find a dress that first and foremost makes the bride happy. Idk if it aired on TLC everywhere (it did in my country), but I also liked How to look good naked. Instead of a regular makeover show they really focused on making the participants feel good in their skin.

one time when i was a kid i went for a sleepover at this girls house and she "had" to have the tv on while she slept but i grew up in a house with no tv so i absolutely could not fall asleep with it on. i ended up watching about 5 hours of that "john and kate plus 8" show...............horrifying. thank you for awakening the memory

To be fair, I remember growing up watching Jon & Kate Plus 8 and while Kate was highkey crazy, people demonized her way too much without acknowledging the fact that Jon did very little as a parent compared to her. Some episodes I felt so bad for her because she seemed so stressed out/strung out basically raising 8 kids on her own while Jon goofed off. It's okay to have fun obviously and kids love to be around the fun parent, but Kate seemed pigeonholed into the strict, mean parent role in a few episodes that could have been avoided if Jon had just... idk took things seriously and helped her out more. Kate was undeniably a nutcase though, don't get me wrong.

Some of the time it has nice moments, but some of the party members could be so horrible and nasty. I’d always feel bad for the bride. There’s a really low budget Canadian version and everyone is so stereotypically Canadian and pleasant

I actually participated in filming an episode with my sister (it never aired, we were way too normal lol) but it was actually super fun! The store staff and stylists and the TLC crew were all super sweet and it ended up being a really nice memory of my sisters wedding.

"What not to wear" was my favorite show as a kid. Me, my mom, and my younger sister watched it a lot. I was probably in elementary school when I recall seeing it the most. Everybody on that show who did the makeovers seemed so cool and friendly to little kid me lol. My favorite was the guy hairdresser who had the salt and pepper hair.

Welcome to Plathville is simultaneously incredibly unsettling and refreshingly cathartic for me. It is the finest example of what it is like to grow up with an abusive, narcissistic parent ever to grace a screen. Somehow two of the most useless parents you've ever seen have ended up with fantastic children, but since they're not living exactly as the mother wishes they're disappointed with them. It's confounding, yet sadly relatable. The kids grew up worryingly sheltered, but as they reach legal age, instead of shying away, they actively expose themselves to the greater world around them that they were denied access to as children, all while working through their obvious trauma due to their mother's pattern of attacking and gaslighting and their father's condescending detachment.
