Jared Diamond goes into some detail on this in "Guns, Germs and Steel" to develope his theory on how natural conditions influence cultural and technological development of societies. It's really interesting because you have these largely isolated islands settled by the same culture but with vastly different natural conditions, certain patterns emerge on how humans adapt to the challenges.

Fun fact: Several Andean cultures that appeared before the Inca Empire had one ancestor that come from the Pacific Ocean. One example was the Chimu culture, who got dominated by the Incas. Their first king and founding father was Tacaynamo, a warrior from a land far away in the ocean. It is possible that Tacaynamo was a polynesian, maybe Hawaiian.

I'm Pohnpeian! I've been in Nan Madol. It's name translates to "The Spaces In Between", or something like that. Pohnpei also translates to "Upon a stone altar". Or "upon stone", but that's less magical. My island might've been in this video for like 4 seconds but it still makes my heart swell to hear it, even if the pronunciation is a little off :P In our oral history, Pohnpei was supposedly settled by a group of sailors led by a man named Sapwkini (who may have been from Kosrae!). If I remember correctly, it was 5 people, 2 men and 3 women? Or maybe the other way around. One of these women is my ancestor! On the voyage to Pohnpei, Sapwkini and his sailors encountered an octopus named Lidakika and asked it for directions to somewhere they could make their home. Lidakika directed them towards a reef that it was living in. Sapwkini sailed to the reef, and with the help of his fellow sailors, they used magic to float rocks from the ocean up on top of the reef, and then they built the island on top of those rocks. Hence the name, Pohnpei! Additionally, Nan Madol was built by two twin sorcerers from Kosrae (maybe :P), their names being Olsohpa and Olsihpa. They were trying to find a place to build an altar to their gods, and sailed to Pohnpei. They actually tried multiple times before they settled on where to build, one of these times they stopped because they supposedly stumbled upon a stairway that led to an underwater city for the gods. A lot of stuff I've read about isn't sure how they managed to build the city, the most popular theory being that they quarried rocks from other islands and somehow transported them to Pohnpei. The traditional oral histories say that they used a dragon to help. Once the city was built, Olsihpa passed away. Olsohpa united the clans of Pohnpei under essentially an emperor, who was called Saudeleur. Thus began the Saudeleur dynasty! I don't wanna say too much on the off chance that Extra Credits is planning more but if anybody is interested, I'd love to share more about my heritage.

I love the Polynesian myths where beasts defeated become Islands. Here in Hawaii, giant Mo`o, or Lizard creatures, would be slain by Maui, and parts of the Mo`o would become small islands or rocky masses in the middle of rivers or bays. Other rocky masses like "Maui's Canoe" can be seen in Wailuku river, the myth is that he parked there to save his Mother from a Mo`o that hid behind a water fall.

I would love to see more extra-history series on some of the Indigenous and Colonial history in North America and/or Canada, especially a series that can highlight the way that the Europeans relied on indigenous people in N. America to survive, then (in Canada) made treaties with the diverse Indigenous people, and then oppressed the Indigenous peoples through colonial law and policies (including the infamous "kill the Indian in the child" Residential School policies). From what I vaguely remember from my Archaeology and history classes the early waves of migration had boats with two outriggers, which were insufficient for the central pacific. It was the later single outrigger and double hulled designs that allowed it and that came from a different group of people.

video always very interesting to improve its general culture ^^ your videos are simple, but at the same time very complete which is a pleasure to learn, even if as a Frenchman who cannot understand English without subtitles is difficult. Fortunately, the drawings, which are simplistic but effective, help me enormously in understanding the video. Continue like this and look forward to seeing your next videos ^^ (and if you are looking for a video subject, I can recommend the surgeon Ambroise Paré who revolutionized surgery in his time.)

Kupe is less popular in the education system than Maui probably because he’s more controversial as there are differing accounts between Iwi and hapu and some of those details are quite important to Iwi/hapu like a lot of Ngāpuhi claim to be descended from him while other accounts would make that not possible and even within Ngapuhi the ways in which they are descended from him can differ.

My Anthropology prof probably would (James Egan) probably would say something at this point of "Coconuts" and point you towards how important the coconut was to settling in the early days because none of the coconuts are native to the Islands. They brought them with them. Pigs and coconuts. He drilled both of those food stuffs very hard into my brain. He mostly worked on Yap, though. Still excited for you to get to the Americas... So little known, but so much mystery.

My favorite historical mystery is the great pause that he talked about very briefly. I really want to know just why there was almost a flurry of settlement and so so so much activity and then suddenly it stopped for 1000 years, and then everything was settled super quickly after that and nobody knows why for sure. It just gives so many ideas and I only learned about it last year. It really is kinda messed up how even the basic history of this vast culture is just not taught or lost.
